tags-related importing tag data map export import help

I recently imported a collection of bookmarks, and when the importing was complete, discovered that they were all tagged with all of the folder names contained in the html file, rather than the individual folder name. Is there a quick way to correct this? It's quite a large collection and it isn't practical to re-tag them individually.
    Thanks,
    Sue

    Graham,
It was an exported bookmark file. There are about 1000 or so bookmarks involved, which need to be properly tagged. I marked them as private in case there was a problem with the import, so I can delete and re-import them, but the issue of proper tagging of those bookmarks remains.

Exported from where, and when? The usual: details such as operating system, browser etc. will be helpful.

That was a sensible precaution :-)
