Protecting Students in the 21st century is a comprehensive, online internet safety program that involves your students, teachers, and parents to keep teens safe online and with their cell phones. In addition to the online curriculum and training lessons, the program includes assessments, quizzes, and a safety pledge for students, safety plans for teachers, and a self-assessment and resources for parents.

The online study of 1,454 adolescents ages 12-17, conducted by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, tried to gauge the differences between school bullying and cyberbullying and found that young people underestimate the bullying of their peers, particularly when it takes place online.

In this three-hour lesson, students explore the concept of cyberbullying and learn how the attributes associated with online communication may fuel inappropriate or bullying behaviour.

This video was made by my 2010 Digital Video Class at Valley Catholic School in Beaverton OR.  We interviewed and discussed Wired Teens and covered topics such as cyberbullying, texting, internet addiction and sexting.

Excellent educator-created video offers students an introduction to the concepts of "managing personal identity online" and "digital footprint" and what it will mean in the course of their lifetime. Particularly noteworthy are the employer comments regarding what they learn from reading what job candidates have posted online and how it affects them both negatively and positively in considering the person for a job.

Microsoft and ISTE have joined forces to put together a series of web literacy lessons, activities, and support resources to help students develop their critical thinking skills when searching the web. The new student-centered curriculum will provide guidance and activities for your students on how to search effectively, how to analyze "the anatomy of a search result," and moreover, understand how to judge the validity and source of the content they find on the web. This curriculum was developed collaboratively by ISTE and Microsoft and will be available soon free to educators.

Digital Information Fluency (DIF) is the ability to find, evaluate and use digital information effectively, efficiently and ethically. DIF involves knowing how digital information is different from print information; having the skills to use specialized tools for finding digital information; and developing the dispositions needed in the digital information environment. As teachers and librarians develop these skills and teach them to students, students will become better equipped to achieve their information needs.
