In 2006, legislation in the state of Virginia added a new component to the educational curriculum for GR K-12: Internet Safety for Students. This colorful 25-page Citizen's Cyberguide focuses on a middle school audience and integrates ethical standards that can promote their use of the web more wisely and responsibly. Includes information on general safety, social networking and gaming and is designed to help kids develop safety skills, cyberethics and respect regarding their behavior online. Materials were developed at James Madison University.
This lesson can be implemented at school if you are teaching in an environment that allows students to use personal learning devices, or outside of school if students are banned from using digital devices.
In this sequel to Privacy Playground, for ages 9-12, the three CyberPigs learn some important lessons about authenticating online information and observing rules of netiquette. They also learn how to distinguish between fact and opinion and how to recognize bias and harmful stereotyping in online content.

A school's Acceptable Use Policy, or AUP, is a list of technology regulations that require students to use technology responsibly and prevent abuse of school computers. Students are often required to sign this "user contract" in order to use school network computers but unfortunately many sign without reading or understanding the information. The Smart AUP assessment tool is a fun and effective way for students to demonstrate to teachers and administrators that they have read and understand the AUP.
In this lesson, students learn about and discuss the legal aspects of cyberbullying. They review a variety of hypothetical scenarios and a case study, and they consider the seriousness of the situations, who is legally responsible, what action (if any) should be taken and by whom. Lesson plan materials for GR 9-12 are also available on the same topic.
Naming in a Digital World: Creating a Safe Persona on the Internet. Students will: 1.Explore naming conventions in digital and non-digital settings. 2. Analyze the underlying connotations of names. 3. Analyze the ways that name-giving practices vary from one culture to another. 4. Synthesize their investigation by choosing and explaining specific names to represent themselves online.

Great parenting advice from Rosalind Wiseman on appropriate discipline for teens and tweens who have participated in sexting either as the perpetrator or someone who has helped spread the photos to others. Three different scenarios are addressed. Some advice may be applicable to school. The idea is for kids to own up and take responsibility - as perpetrators, bystanders, and targets - for unethical behavior.
Several states have taken the NETS standards one to several steps further in identifying what K-12 education must achieve in terms of facilitating student proficiency in the defined skills. These efforts have, in some cases, led to standards being issued by each state for its own students to meet
This has great resources. I'm very excited to see New Jersey's focus on Career and Life Skills. However, not seeing the same focus in other states has me wishing for national standards.

A commericial solution to social networking in the classroom. ConnectYard enables schools to leverage popular social media for teaching students where they live and socialize, online. Recently, the call for teaching 21st century skills and content in K-12 has gained considerable momentum and acceptance. Problem-solving, communication, and teamwork are examples of 21st century skills; a deep, integrated model of key science processes, for example, is 21st century content. To learn such 21st century content and skills, students must use 21st century information and communication technology.
