Because many students had already taken part in the blogging challenge, it was decided in September 2009 to extend to two challenges - one for better bloggers and another for better commenters. Over 600 individual students and 80 classes totalling a possible 3000 students registered this time. Again we had participation from 15 countries of the world, some bloggers were only just starting, others had their blogs for over a year.\nIt is now 2010 and the student blogging challenge has its own blog. In this talk, presented at the Family Online Safety Institute's annual conference (Nov 2010), senior research specialist Amanda Lenhart discussed Pew Internet data about how teens use mobile phones and the potential safety issues associated with them. Governor Rod Blagojevich Thursday signed Senate Bill 2512 legislation to help protect children from the dangers of the Internet. SB 2512 requires school districts, beginning in the 2009-2010 school year, to incorporate an "age-appropriate Internet safety unit of instruction in the current course of study regularly taught in the district's schools," beginning in third grade.

Award winning author, Don Tapscott, and award winning global collaborators Julie Lindsay and Vicki Davis are excited to announce the 2010 NetGenEd Project, a global collaboration to envision the future of education and social action by inspiring today's students to study leading technology trends and create their vision for the future. The project involves over 300 students from 6 countres and 15 classrooms.

A PEW research study conducted in 2009 and released this week (May 27, 2010) shows that young people are actually more mindful of online reputation and guard their personal information more than older ones. Among age groups, internet users ages 30-49 are the most likely to worry about the amount of information available online: 38% say they are concerned, compared with 30% of users ages 18-29, 31% of those ages 50-64 and 23% of those 65 and older.

Carrie James speaks at the Social Good Summit 2010 about the ethical sensibilities of digital youth and describes the need for students to develop important cognitive and analytical skills when using social media. Much of the work was described in the GoodPlay Project.

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, and the National Cyber Security Alliance is looking to raise awareness among college students to help them stay safe and secure online. According to the 2010 Identity Fraud Survey Report, college students lost five times more money than any other age group as a result of identity fraud or other online fraud situations.

When it comes to the Internet, teenage girls, particularly those with low self-esteem, don't always present themselves honestly. Girl Scouts of the USA conducted a national survey in June 2010 of 1,026 girls ages 14 through 17. The survey found that girls often downplay their positive characteristics on social media networking sites, and many choose to portray themselves as sexy or crazy.

The Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) and the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project have agreed to conduct a research project aimed at understanding teenagers' behavior online. The research will examine how this behavior ties to digital citizenship - the behaviors, expectations and skills teens have around interacting with others in digital spaces. The research is jointly funded by the Pew Internet Project and Cable in the Classroom. The study will begin in November 2010 and results are expected in November 2011.

Amends the Harassing and Obscene Communications Act. Creates the Cyberbullying Law. Provides that the offense of harassment through electronic communications also includes the use of electronic communication for making a harassing statement for the purpose of alarming, tormenting, or terrorizing a specific person on at least 2 separate occasions; or creating and maintaining an Internet website or webpage, which is accessible to one or more third parties for a period of at least 24 hours, and which contains harassing statements made for the purpose of alarming, tormenting, or terrorizing a specific person. Establishes penalties. Effective immediately. The new law takes effect January 1st and provides that the Internet safety curriculums in schools will begin with the 2009-2010 school year. The bill allows the age-appropriate unit of instruction to be incorporated into the current courses of study regularly taught in the districts' schools.

The annual Horizon Report identifies and describes emerging technologies likely to have a large impact on teaching, learning, or creative inquiry on college and university campuses within the next five years. In each edition of the Horizon Report, six emerging technologies or practices are described that are likely to enter mainstream use on campuses within three adoption horizons spread over the next one to five years. Each report also presents critical trends and challenges that will affect teaching and learning over the same time frame.

Digital Nation is a new, open source PBS project that explores what it means to be human in an entirely new world -- a digital world. It consists of this Web site as well as a major FRONTLINE documentary to be broadcast on Feb. 2, 2010.

NCSA teamed up with USA Today Education Foundation and the Department of Homeland Security to develop seven lessons during the 2009-2010 school year targeted at 8th-12th graders. Lesson plans use recent news stories about cyber security issues.

Third Place winner of "Cyberbullying Public Service Announcement" contest at the Anaheim Student Television Network Conference, March 2010.

Turned in March 4th, 2010 for STN (Student Television Network Convention) at Disneyland in Anaheim, CA. There was a limit of six hours to make a 30 second PSA (Public Service Announcement.) The topic was "cyberbullying." Supervised editing took place and the film was shot, edited and finished before deadline.
