Challenge Yourself to Blog [Mar 2010] - 0 views

    Because many students had already taken part in the blogging challenge, it was decided in September 2009 to extend to two challenges - one for better bloggers and another for better commenters. Over 600 individual students and 80 classes totalling a possible 3000 students registered this time. Again we had participation from 15 countries of the world, some bloggers were only just starting, others had their blogs for over a year.\nIt is now 2010 and the student blogging challenge has its own blog. Governor Signs Law To Educate Children On Internet Safety [Illinois] - 0 views

  • he new law takes effect January 1st and provides that the Internet safety curriculums in schools will begin with the 2009-2010 school year. The bill allows the age-appropriate unit of instruction to be incorporated into the current courses of study regularly taught in the districts’ schools.
  • Illinois’ partnership with the Netsmartz national Internet safety program was a Governor’s initiative that was launched in 2006.
  • Earlier this week, Governor Blagojevich signed into law the state’s new Cyberbullying law. It clarifies the definition of harassing someone by using electronic communication such as the Internet and text messaging and enables the prosecution of someone who anonymously bullies in this capacity.

    Governor Rod Blagojevich Thursday signed Senate Bill 2512 legislation to help protect children from the dangers of the Internet. SB 2512 requires school districts, beginning in the 2009-2010 school year, to incorporate an "age-appropriate Internet safety unit of instruction in the current course of study regularly taught in the district's schools," beginning in third grade.

Reputation Management and Social Media [Pew Research] - 5 views

    A PEW research study conducted in 2009 and released this week (May 27, 2010) shows that young people are actually more mindful of online reputation and guard their personal information more than older ones. Among age groups, internet users ages 30-49 are the most likely to worry about the amount of information available online: 38% say they are concerned, compared with 30% of users ages 18-29, 31% of those ages 50-64 and 23% of those 65 and older.

According to the 2010 Identity Fraud Survey Report, college students lost five times more money than any other age group as a result of identity fraud or other online fraud situations.

Teens With Low Self-Esteem Boost Image Online - 3 views

    When it comes to the Internet, teenage girls, particularly those with low self-esteem, don't always present themselves honestly. Girl Scouts of the USA conducted a national survey in June 2010 of 1,026 girls ages 14 through 17. The survey found that girls often downplay their positive characteristics on social media networking sites, and many choose to portray themselves as sexy or crazy.

New Research Study to Examine Teens' Online Behavior - 4 views

    The Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) and the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project have agreed to conduct a research project aimed at understanding teenagers' behavior online. The research will examine how this behavior ties to digital citizenship - the behaviors, expectations and skills teens have around interacting with others in digital spaces. The research is jointly funded by the Pew Internet Project and Cable in the Classroom. The study will begin in November 2010 and results are expected in November 2011.

    Amends the Harassing and Obscene Communications Act. Creates the Cyberbullying Law. Provides that the offense of harassment through electronic communications also includes the use of electronic communication for making a harassing statement for the purpose of alarming, tormenting, or terrorizing a specific person on at least 2 separate occasions; or creating and maintaining an Internet website or webpage, which is accessible to one or more third parties for a period of at least 24 hours, and which contains harassing statements made for the purpose of alarming, tormenting, or terrorizing a specific person. The topic was "cyberbullying." Supervised editing took place and the film was shot, edited and finished before deadline.
