2 dead in China from unusual bird flu strain - CNN.com - 0 views

  •
The article shows a new strain of bird flu H7N9.  The virus has a hard time infecting humans, but for every one human infected there are thousands of birds infected.  This strain is less harmful than H5N1, but still one death has been reported.

Could new flu spark global flu pandemic? New bird flu strain seen adapting to mammals, ... - 0 views

  • "The human isolates, but not the avian and environmental ones, have a protein mutation that allows for efficient growth in human cells and that also allows them to grow at a temperature that corresponds to the upper respiratory tract of humans, which is lower than you find in birds,

These are the same researchers who did the infamous bird flu study that was temporarily banned
  • new virus has sickened at least 33 people, killing nine.
  • ...4 more annotations...

This is so concerning... and yet it seems that the general population is oblivious to the implications of this virus
  • majority of the viruses in the study -- from both humans and birds -- display mutations in the surface protein hemagglutinin, which the pathogen uses to bind to host cells.
  • The same mutation, Kawaoka notes, lets the avian virus thrive in the cooler temperatures of the human upper respiratory system
  • the new strain could be treated with another clinically relevant antiviral drug, oseltamivir.

Genetic sequencing of the current H7N9 outbreak in China has revealed the ability of the virus to adapt to a human host

China: Reports of bird flu in humans reach 60 - CNN.com - 1 views

This is so scary. I am always wary when China says, "Don't worry everything is under control". China was criticized during the SARS outbreak for failing to release information. If bird flu ever gains the ability to spread from human to human, we have a very bad situation.

WHO: New Flu Passes More Easily from Bird to Human | TIME.com - 0 views

  •
H7N9 strain that is capable of spreading quicker than the H5N1 strain. 100 people in China have been affected and killed more than 20. Doesn't immediately cause the noticeable symptoms like most flu strains would, making it difficult to monitor.

New bird flu show signs of direct jump to humans - 0 views

This is the last thing we need! Another strain of bird-to-human transmitted virus, and researcher believe this could be the worst one yet. While research on this virus is still being conducted in China, there is already strong evidence that this could be the next big flu outbreak.

China bird flu cases now at 102 - 0 views

It is amazing that in less than a month this new strain has spread to over 100. So far it has only effected China, but I wonder when another country will report a case.

Researchers find avian virus may be harmful to cancer cells | Science Codex - 0 views

Interesting study on the possibility of using the Newcastle disease virus to treat prostate cancer. They modified the virus so that it replicates only in the presence of an active prostate-specific antigen. There are only mild side effects in humans although this is a fatal disease in domestic birds (I remember one of the former companies I worked for working on this vaccine for birds).

The New Bird Flu, and How to Read the News About It - 0 views

  •
It is amazing that twitter is becoming a way for the WHO to inform people if it starts tweeting accurate information. Most time flu's seem to be either over exaggerated by media and many people do not know how to interpret a lot of the information that is being given out by places like the CDC and WHO, causing people to panic.

A Science Project With Legs - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • Almost twice as many of the kosher chicken samples tested positive for antibiotic-resistant E. coli as did the those from conventionally raised birds. And even the samples from organically raised chickens and those raised without antibiotics did not significantly differ from the conventional ones.
