This article discusses the disagreement between administrators and teachers regarding online safety taught at school.

Survey conducted by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and Microsoft revealed that students are not savvy in the area of being safe and ethical in cyberspace. Schools, teachers and administrators need to bridge the divide for students to not only be safe, but skillful digital information users.

Seeing as we "talked" a lot about blogging policy and digital ethics this week, I thought this was a perfect information literacy article.

This article looks at online communication from a district's point of view. Using tools such as websites, Facebook, Twitter, blogs, online surveys, YouTube, and Pinterest, school districts are getting information out to a variety of constituents, not just parents and students. They are building a connection to the community.

This short article (that I hope you don't have to sign in to read) outlines survey data about how students and schools are using social media to enhance collaboration and the development of a school community. Notably 96% of students surveyed say they use social networking sites and 50% of those say they discuss schoolwork on those sites. The last 5 paragraphs of the article explains ways in which teachers and schools can capitalize on this. The subtext is that schools should move away from bans on social media.

About half of K-8 teachers say digital games have become a regular and beneficial part of today's classroom, according to a survey by the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop, a nonprofit research organization that studies children's learning through digital media.

Tips on how to avoid scams on facebook - written by Richard Byrne

This article talks about how companies use Web 2.0 media as an advertising agent, and how some of these are scams. Furthermore it suggests he Better Business Bureau as a tool to identify these scams. It relates to IML as students need to have the technological literacy to determine which posts are frauds and which are legitimate. Furthermore, the need to have the awareness and ability to check these scams out on a legitimate source

Great article providing a Better Business Bureau list of scam alerts which I found interesting. The article mentions Facebook in particular but I have faced these scams and schemes in emails and on other game sites. I don't trust these surveys either that are sent through emails where they promise you to enter you into a prize drawing etc. So many scams- its good to know there's someone trying to do something about it by making the public aware of these scams. Also teachings students how to use the Internet safely should be part of the curriculum and also digital citizenship. We need to make our students responsible internet users and contributors.

This blog talks about survey results with the use of social learning and media.

Over 35,000 teachers and other staff members took a survey and results were compared from 2008 and 2010 for ways technology is used in the classroom. It was very interesting to see the changes in just a two year span.

Great graphic. This really validates the reason why schools need to educate educators to be more tech savvy. But, the graphic itself is a little deceiving. I love the information, but its depiction seems to show more than what the growth actually is. The graphic give the impression that the base line established at the left of the scale, the useage in 2008, and then the ADDITIONAL useage beyond that in 2010. This, however, is not what it shows. What is in fact being shown is a baseline that SHOULD run down the CENTER of the graph. By not doing this it appears for example that teachers have doubled their use of technology to provide feedback, when in actuality it remained the same in 2010 as it did in 2008...38%. I don't want to discount the quality and impact of this data...I just wish that it would have been represented in a more accurate and less deceptive manner.

Before giving students internet access, there must be safety training for teachers and students.
