Information and communication technology plays a large role in changing the field of education. With laptops, PDAs and even smart phones finding their way into daily lessons, these devices are changing the way teachers and students share information and the way schools communicate both within their own organization and to the community.

This article and a few others on the site explain the role of Information and Communication Technology in education. This ICT concept is important to me as a Business teacher who is responsible for teaching the tpes of applications that are ICT. To think that the concept of communication technology being added to information technology due to the Internet back in 1997 is interesting.

In this article, "Role of Information & Communication Technology in Education", the author briefly discusses the benefits of technology in education. Because of the brevity of the article, most of the advantages were only skimmed over. However, the author does mention a point that resonates with me as I attempt to integrate technology into my classroom: "The ability to digitally record any data, from tests to transcripts, is a feature of information technology that has long-term potential to save money on both paper and ink as well as make organization and management simpler for administrators and teachers" (Page). The ability to streamline classrooms and to reduce the need for paper intrigues me. Also, her point about technology making "organization and management simpler" is key to sustainable implementation of technology in my future classroom.

Six technologies that soon could be in your classrooms - 4 views

This is a three-page overview of the Horizon Report which tries to predict technological trends in the classroom. It predicts a greater use of tablets in the short run, game-based learning for the medium term, and augmented reality in the long run. It says all of the technologies will enhance collaborative learning, but associates creativity with only game based learning. Finally, it lists recent trends in technology and education. It also lists the most likely obstacles to adopting the technologies in the classroom. Being a subscription site, one must sign up (free) in order to read past the first page.

COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY AND AUTISM - 2 views

When looking for various assessments in relation to technology, I stumbled upon this article that discusses assessments, not only in relation to all students, but students with special needs.  Technology has really made a breakthrough with communication barriers among children with autism.  Technology assessments have helped with data collection, communication, and allowing various learning techniques to create new methods of retaining information.  In relations specifically to children with autism, the internet is a social network for them and allows them to communicate without the need for speech.  It is very interesting and worth a read through.

Think "Exciting": E-Learning and the Big "E" (EDUCAUSE Quarterly) | EDUCAUSE - 1 views

  •
Author Bernard Luskin indicates that most of today's literature refers to the physical changes in technology but as we learn more about human behavior and how people learn, it will dramatically impact the way we teach globally. The author provides 'key takeaways' from the article which all relate to media literacy. He explains that this new 'exploding' environment will impact the future of learning for all levels of education as the media, learning psychology, technologies become popular tools for learning. As we learn more from research and studies about media and how it relates to human behavior, it will increase the effectiveness of the ways technology is used in education. The author states that the 'big "E" is for "exciting, energetic, engaging, extended learning". He explains that E learning has and will continue to grow as a key in media literacy and the way people learn, study, individual behavior in society, and products that are produced. This interest in technology, media, communications and how humans learn has actually developed a new field of study, Media Psychology. The author supports the need for people to enter this field and recommends that we learn what e-learning is about and go beyond the electronic gizmos and gadgets.
  •
The exploding new media and communications environment has implications for the future of both K-12 and adult learning as media, technology, and learning psychology increasingly become tools for learning in and outside the classroom. The new research area of media studies, i.e., the study of media effects, includes media psychology because an understanding of human behavior is vital to the effective use of technology in education.

9 Wrong And 8 Right Ways Students Should Use Technology - 3 views

This is a short but sweet reminder of why and when teachers should use technology in their classrooms. Really, technology is the tool for learning, not necessarily the creation of a product. There is a great list to ways we should and should not implement technology tools. This list is actually a good reference to check as you are contemplating using tech in the classroom -- should I or should I not use it? References within the text.

How Do Teachers Use Technology to Facilitate Student Learning? - 3 views

  •
Over 35,000 teachers and other staff members took a survey and results were compared from 2008 and 2010 for ways technology is used in the classroom. It was very interesting to see the changes in just a two year span.
  •
Great graphic. This really validates the reason why schools need to educate educators to be more tech savvy. But, the graphic itself is a little deceiving. I love the information, but its depiction seems to show more than what the growth actually is. The graphic give the impression that the base line established at the left of the scale, the useage in 2008, and then the ADDITIONAL useage beyond that in 2010. This, however, is not what it shows. What is in fact being shown is a baseline that SHOULD run down the CENTER of the graph. By not doing this it appears for example that teachers have doubled their use of technology to provide feedback, when in actuality it remained the same in 2010 as it did in 2008...38%. I don't want to discount the quality and impact of this data...I just wish that it would have been represented in a more accurate and less deceptive manner.

In this article, Mélanie L. Sisley looks at the pros and cons for the brain of our current information-laden environment, quoting Howard Gardner, Nicholas Carr and others. Her conclusion is that we need to consider how to make this new media environment work for us in a purposeful, positive way.

This site states, "Web 2.0 is providing a stage for anyone to express a digital presence and contribute thoughts and opinions." It suggests that technology is making us be creative and to think for ourselves.

Interesting article that discusses how our brains change when using Web technologies. The term "partial attention" is explained as "a state of constantly scanning for information." Insightful description of how our world has changed significantly now that technology is here to stay.

This article from eLearn Magazine discusses how neuropsyhcologists are studying the effects of using new media and Web 2.0 tools on our brains. Their results show both positive and negative findings. Some of the benefits include certain areas of the brain being worked harder and making strong neural connections allowing us to process and evaluate large amounts of information quickly. A downside is that we are not retaining information for extended periods of time and we are losing the ability to communicate with feeling because we are not always in face-to-face contact with others. The article also discusses Psychologist Howard Gardner's "Five Minds of 2.0 Learners." These are higher order thinking skills he believes individuals need in order to be successful in the digital world. These include disciplined, synthesizing, creating, respectful, and ethical minds. This is an interesting read and could start a great classroom discussion about technology use with your students.

What I liked about the site and the TSA overall is that it is STEM related. Not specific to content area but general to all technology courses. Had many types of technical competitions. A change from FBLA or Robotics competitions which are specific.

Students struggle with information literact - 2 views

  •
This news article explains that just because students have grown up in the technology age, doesn't mean they are experts in using that technology. It highlights the 3 areas students must master for success with using technology to research: "The ability to identify trustworthy and useful information; The ability to manage overabundant information; and The ability to communicate information effectively." As we use web 2.0 we must remember to teach our students how to use these tools effectively, not just assume they can use them because they've grown up in the tech environment.
