An educator's guide to open educational resources (OER), including online repositories, curriculum-sharing websites, sources for lesson plans and activities, and open textbooks.

OER, a part of the global open content movement, are shared teaching, learning, and research resources available under legally recognized open licenses-free for people to reuse, revise, remix, and redistribute. Why are OER important? High-quality OER can save teachers significant time and effort on resource development and advance student learning inside and outside the classroom.

This site has a plethora of resources. I would not send this out to staff. Instead I would use this as a resource for me to dig through some great OER sites and then share the best ones for middle school teachers and students. Because the look of this list is not very appealing, I think it would turn many people away. We have many students and teachers looking for audiobooks. This is a great resource. Once again there are tons of math options. I find many math teachers thinking that math is different and that it's harder to incorporate technology into their curriculum. Usually when I show a math teacher just a few options, their eyes open. The list of resources here is awesome. Open.edu is a great resource to help teachers expand their knowledge. I could probably bookmark that resource separately.

That is the trick with sites that have sooo many resources; teachers tend to get overwhelmed and then don't look at any of them! I also try to sort through resources and send them specific sites or links that are focused on what area(s) they have been asking about. I will also be sorting through this site to find some great resources to share!

I really like this open resource because there are a variety of subjects. I stumbled upon this lesson plan on money management and spending and I like it because it's very interactive. It has great graphics and holds the attention of the student. This could be used at the high school level in many classes such as psychology and business courses.

Great resource to share with teachers before summer starts. There are many free courses to take on a variety of subjects. It seems like all teachers at our school could benefit from something on here.

MERLOT is a free and open peer reviewed collection of online teaching and learning materials and faculty-developed services contributed and used by an international education community. Our middle school is going 1:1 this year and the teachers are encouraged to try blended learning. This site would be helpful for them to help set up their courses.

"The Wisconsin Digital Learning Plan, aligned with Agenda 2017, outlines a vision of digital education in Wisconsin including the integration of Open Education Resources (OER) to increase equity and access to high-quality K-12 instructional resources." Since Educator Effectiveness has hit Wisconsin head on, here are some OER that will help us all. These resources will be especially helpful when planning the staff development which will be required for EE.

This resource is going to continue to grow. DPI is seeking good OER to include.

This article caught my attention as I was considering Open Education Resources. This is a positive use of global learning offerings. It may not be available to all, but certainly might be to those who need it. "Looks like a good news for refugees worldwide as they can now pick from over 1,000 online university courses for absolutely free as part of an endeavor to offer education and skills training under a US-based program. The program was unveiled Monday, June 20 as a part of World Refugee Day."

The NMC Horizon Report > 2014 K-12 Edition identifies "Rethinking the Role of Teachers" and the "Shift to Deeper Learning Approaches" as fast trends accelerating the adoption of educational technology in K-12 education over the next one to two years. The "Increasing Focus on Open Educational Resources" and the "Increasing Use of Hybrid Learning Designs" are mid-range trends expected to accelerate technology use in the next three to five years; and the "Rapid Acceleration of Intuitive Technology" and "Rethinking of How Schools Work" are long-range trends, positioned at more than five years away.

If you are considering teaching an online course and using some or all Open Educational Resources, you need to consider the points in this article.
