Online case studies highlight OER implementation in schools SETDA has published a series of case studies focused on the implementation of Open Educational Resources (OER) at the school level. The online resource, OER in Action: Implementation Highlights , examines the definitions and parameters of OER, includes a variety of resources, and provides an in-depth look at the implementation of OER in New York, Utah and Washington.

The 6th graders study social issues and many tend to choose environmental issues. The National Science Foundation OER would provide a source of information for students to narrow their topics during the research process. It provides current, up-to-date articles surrounding issues and discoveries scientists and researchers have recently discovered about various environmental issues of concern. Students are also required to write their opinion about their topic at the end of the research unit. I feel this OER resource would help students gain critical thinking and problem-solving skills they need to write an opinion on an environmental topic.

An educator's guide to open educational resources (OER), including online repositories, curriculum-sharing websites, sources for lesson plans and activities, and open textbooks.

OER, a part of the global open content movement, are shared teaching, learning, and research resources available under legally recognized open licenses-free for people to reuse, revise, remix, and redistribute. Why are OER important? High-quality OER can save teachers significant time and effort on resource development and advance student learning inside and outside the classroom.

To help states, districts, teachers, and other users determine the degree of alignment of OER to the Common Core State Standards, and to determine aspects of quality of OER, Achieve has developed eight rubrics in collaboration with leaders from the OER community. To allow users to apply these rubrics and evaluate the quality of instructional resources, Achieve partnered with OER Commons to develop an online evaluation tool.

What are OER? Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching and learning materials that you may freely use and reuse at no cost. Unlike fixed, copyrighted resources, OER have been authored or created by an individual or organization that chooses to retain few, if any, ownership rights.

Useful tool/demonstration from OER Commons to guide students in evaluating a website as information source. I've used Diigo's annotation tools with students to practice evaluating websites as sources. This would be useful to use as a guided example prior to their independent practice. OER JG

List of good places to find OERS

At the #GoOpen Exchange on Friday, everyone was talking about OER and the need to curate. The Twiter feed shows the buzz around the trending event and it shows school librarians were at the table. As the initiative moves forward, it is critical for us to choose to be at the head of this particular table.

This is a very useful link on how to read a scholarly article. I would use this with HS seniors and college students. Journal articles can be very intimidating at first but this OER source offers very helpful and easy to understand advice on the best way to approach an article.

OER nutrition unit developed by Baylor College of Medicine. Great lesson plans with objectives, standards, and activities all laid out. Upper elementary teachers teaching nutrition unit or a middle school health class would find this source very useful.

"The Wisconsin Digital Learning Plan, aligned with Agenda 2017, outlines a vision of digital education in Wisconsin including the integration of Open Education Resources (OER) to increase equity and access to high-quality K-12 instructional resources." Since Educator Effectiveness has hit Wisconsin head on, here are some OER that will help us all. These resources will be especially helpful when planning the staff development which will be required for EE.

Ck-12 offers "FlexBook" textbooks and other OER for teaching Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). I will use this resource for teaching in our STEM lab at the Intermediate School, and as an excellent source for PD when teachers are learning about new technology tools at their fingertips.

OER at Digital Learning Department / Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction

I would suggest the use of this OER to 3rd grade teachers. Currently in collaboration with the library, 3rd grade students conduct a research assignment on the animal of their choice. Part of my collaboration effort is to teach the students about the various sources that are out there and how to use their effectively. I think this Encyclopedia would come in handy when students are prepared to collection information on their animal of choice.
