Scitable | Learn Science at Nature - 0 views

  •
Nature Publishing Group, publishers of the highly regarded Nature magazine, decided in 2009 to make a sustained effort to overcome questions about the reliability of free materials found on the Internet in life and physical science disciplines. I can see the science department using this site in the classes they are building in Haiku. We have some teachers who are creating blended learning classes and the resources on this page will be helpful. JD

Ck-12 offers "FlexBook" textbooks and other OER for teaching Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). I will use this resource for teaching in our STEM lab at the Intermediate School, and as an excellent source for PD when teachers are learning about new technology tools at their fingertips.

EOL Learning + Education - 0 views

One of my goals this coming year is to expand the resources I know about for my math / science folks, since that isn't my natural interest or background. This Encyclopedia of Life source is amazing in its information and layout, but it also has a wealth of lesson plans for a variety of ages that tie directly to what our staff is teaching. The lessons are a blend of technology and other activities. A great resource to share with science teachers!

nsf.gov - Earth & Environment - Discoveries - US National Science Foundation (NSF) - 0 views

  •
The 6th graders study social issues and many tend to choose environmental issues. The National Science Foundation OER would provide a source of information for students to narrow their topics during the research process. It provides current, up-to-date articles surrounding issues and discoveries scientists and researchers have recently discovered about various environmental issues of concern. Students are also required to write their opinion about their topic at the end of the research unit. I feel this OER resource would help students gain critical thinking and problem-solving skills they need to write an opinion on an environmental topic.

I really like this site. I collaborate with the 5th grade teacher in my district to teach a similar lesson. This OER resource you found is something I will probably refer to in the future. Thanks!

Literacy in Science: Word Clouds - 2 views

  •
I love this quick simple idea to get students intrigued and engaged in a lesson. We have had a huge focus on our new literacy and writing curriculum this year and I can see my upper elementary and middle school teachers using this in conjunction with their science and social studies lessons.

I Love That Teaching Idea! - 0 views

  •
This has a plethora of curriculum and skill sets for the classroom teacher and specialists including art, assessment, classroom management, science, service learning, and so on. It is a great 'go to resource' that an educator (especially initial educators) can access creative ideas and build upon them. It is also something that can be shared with district personnel to either add to or build a similar resource 'page' or 'document' within one's district.

WTAMU - Virtual Math Lab - 0 views

WTAMU Math Tutorials and Help I like how it "showcases exciting" math terms and then how the user can "click on . . . (a term) . . . to Google." At the same time there are Physics forums that can be accessed along with (among other resources) a virtual on-line Math lab ( West Texas A & M University) for GRE Math study sessions, Math for sciences, beginning, intermediate, and college Algebra. A student can go in and seek extra guidance or training (i.e. for a high school class) or it can serve as an extra challenge to tests the student's content knowledge before an exam. This part of the site is geared toward high school students (and college) while the initial page is also appropriate for elementary and middle school students. A great starter to click on a math term that an elementary student may begin to explore. I can see 4-7 grade students really liking this portion to review what they know and experiment with what the are/will be learning.

The Science of Happiness - 0 views

  •
This resource comes from Edx which offers 820 courses in 30 subjects from 85 institutional partners. This course comes from the University of California: Berkeley and is an 8 week course on the science behind happiness. Our district has been focusing on staff and student wellness this year, specifically mental health. We have many initiatives in place and have been working with local agencies to improve access to healthcare. This would be a course staff or students could take to obtain a deeper understanding of how our bodies function and why we feel the way we do at times.

STEM: Facebook is pledging $15 million over the next five years to Code.org to enable the nonprofit to expand access to computer science education, in an effort to improve diversity in the technology industry. I have spent a bit of time last year looking for maker type activities and science resources. This is another DIY/At Home possible learning site for students to expand their learning, or for teachers to bring maker activities in on a minimal budget.

Crash Course: Astronomy - 0 views

  •
This would be a great resource for 8th Grade science for both teachers and students. There are currently 47 episodes on various aspects of astronomy. The narrator fills these short video lessons with a lot of information in terms that students would understand. He speaks animated and quickly. These videos could be used with a flipped classroom approach as an introduction to various astronomy topics, made interactive with Educanon or included in an online science course.
