City Builders: Property Development in New York and London, 1980-2000 University Press of Kansas, 2001 In the last twenty years, urban centers worldwide have experienced enormous booms and busts as real-estate developers, financial institutions, and public officials first poured resources into physical redevelopment, then watched as the market collapsed before booming again in the 1990s. In this extensively revised edition of her highly regarded The City Builders, Susan Fainstein examines major redevelopment efforts in New York and London to uncover the forces behind these investment cycles and the role that public policy can play in moderating market instability. Fainstein chronicles the progress of three development projects in New York (Times Square, downtown Brooklyn, and Battery Park City) and three in London (King's Cross, Spitalfields, and Docklands). Analyzing the political and economic processes underlying physical changes in these two cities during the last two decades, she uncovers the role played by developers' perceptions and strategies in their interactions with both public policy-makers and property markets. This new edition follows each development effort to the present and places the discussion in a newly strengthened theoretical framework. In her investigation of the convergence between London and New York during the 1980s and then the divergence that began in the 1990s, Fainstein traces similarities and differences in the effects of globalization, ideology, and institutional structure in each city's experience. This comparative framework also sheds considerable light on the contributing roles of structure and agency in creating final outcomes. Fainstein concludes by assessing the impact of "theme park" development on the urban fabric and recommending a set of realistic strategies to both redevelop cities and improve the lives of urban residents. This book is part of the Studies in Government and Public Policy series. Table of Contents List

The city and man, Volume 1978, Parte 2 Leo Strauss 0 Resenhas University of Chicago Press, 1978 - 245 páginas The City and Man consists of provocative essays by the late Leo Strauss on Aristotle's Politics, Plato's Republic, and Thucydides' Peloponnesian Wars. Together, the essays constitute a brilliant attempt to use classical political philosophy as a means of liberating modern political philosophy from the stranglehold of ideology. The essays are based on a long and intimate familiarity with the works, but the essay on Aristotle is especially important as one of Strauss's few writings on the philosopher who largely shaped Strauss's conception of antiquity. The essay on Plato is a full-scale discussion of Platonic political philosophy, wide in scope yet compact in execution. When discussing Thucydides, Strauss succeeds not only in presenting the historian as a moral thinker of high rank, but in drawing his thought into the orbit of philosophy, and thus indicating a relation of history and philosophy that does not presuppose the absorption of philosophy by histor

Pricing in road transport: a multi-disciplinary perspective E. T. Verhoef 0 Resenhas Edward Elgar Publishing, 2008 - 327 páginas Transport pricing is high on the political agenda throughout the world, but as the authors illustrate, governments seeking to implement this often face challenging questions and significant barriers. The associated policy and research questions cannot always be addressed adequately from a mono-disciplinary perspective. This book shows how a multi-disciplinary approach may lead to new types of analysis and insights, contributing to a better understanding of the intricacies of transport pricing and eventually to a potentially more effective and acceptable design of such policies. The study addresses important policy and research themes such as the possible motives for introducing road transport pricing and potential conflicts between these motives, behavioural responses to transport pricing for households and firms, the modelling of transport pricing, and the acceptability of pricing. Studying road transport pricing from a multi-disciplinary perspective, this book will be of great interest to transport policymakers and advisors, transport academics and consultants and students in transport studies.

The International Encyclopedia of Human Geography is a multinational attempt to capture and trace the state of human geography as discipline and as a description of the world as it exists today and as it changes its shape in the future. Its ambition, in other words, is to provide a major and continually updated resource that provides an authoritative means of answering the fundamental questions in human geography. It does this by taking on the venerable format of an Encyclopedia which we can understand both in its original meaning of a course of education - in this case with the description 'human geography' - or in its more modern meaning as treating comprehensively a particular branch of knowledge through the medium of articles arranged alphabetically, by subject. Visions 2030 | Welcome to Visions 2030 - 0 views

  •
Welcome to Visions 2030 Funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), this research commenced in October 2008 and involves the universities of Leeds, Oxford, East Anglia, Salford and Manchester, in consultation with local walking and cycling groups in four UK cities. It builds upon a growing recognition that walking and cycling can make a considerable contribution to sustainable transport goals, public health and the sociability of communities. The amount of walking and cycling in the United Kingdom has declined significantly over the last sixty years and previous research suggests that there are currently major obstacles preventing people from using these modes. Visions2030 is unashamedly radical in its approach to this challenge and will examine the means by which a fundamental change to both the quantity and quality of such 'active travel' can occur. Public engagement with the visioning process is a key priority, and a range of participatory tools will enable people to weave their own stories in and out of expert visions, thus opening up the possibility of a richer and expanded set of visions, grounded in real experiences. This research assesses the potential in the UK for achieving substantial increases in walking and cycling by 2030. Evidence based pathways will be developed with input from a new range of participatory tools to determine the suitability of alternative packages of measures. Through innovative approaches to analysis, more challenging longer term targets can be reached and the step changes necessary to fully maximise the potential of walk and cycling in achieving a sustainable transport system and a more inclusive society can be realised.

Research Project Visions of the Role of Walking and Cycling in 2030 The Transport Studies Unit, University of Oxford, is a major partner in a £1.4m, three year project that aims to develop visions of sustainable urban futures. 'Visions of the role of walking and cycling in 2030' (Visions2030) seeks to revitalise the quality of walking and cycling in the UK and explore ways in which more people might be encouraged to use these modes in the future. Funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the research commenced in October 2008 and also involves the universities of Leeds, East Anglia, Salford and Manchester. It builds upon a growing recognition that walking and cycling can make a considerable contribution to sustainable transport goals, public health and the sociability of communities. James Macmillen, research fellow at the Transport Studies Unit, comments: "Urban space is an extremely precious resource and our society needs to think seriously about how we would like our cities to function. This research represents a fantastic opportunity to improve the conditions for pedestrians and cyclists in the UK." Cognition and economics Elisabeth Krecké, Carine Krecké, Roger Koppl 0 Resenhas Emerald Group Publishing, 2006 - 284 páginas The cognitive sciences, having emerged in the second half of the twentieth century, are recently experiencing a spectacular renewal which cannot leave unaffected any discipline that deals with human behavior. The primary motivation for our project has been to weigh up the impact that this ongoing revolution of the sciences of the mind is likely to have on social sciences in particular, on economics. The idea was to gather together a diverse group of social scientists to think about the following questions. Have the various new approaches to cognition provoked a crisis in economic science? Should we speak of a scientific revolution in economics occurring under the growing influence of the cognitive paradigm? Above all, can a more precise knowledge of the complex functioning of the human mind and brain advance in any way the understanding of economic decision-making? This volume brings together economists from various traditions such as Austrian economics, evolutionary economics, institutional economics, law and economics, neuro-economics and bio-economics. More specifically, it contains contributions by William N. Butos and Roger G. Koppl, Geoffrey M. Hodgson, Carine Kreckeacute; and Elisabeth Kreckeacute;, Janet T. Landa, Thomas J. McQuade, Steven G. Medema, Bart Nooteboom, Richard A. Posner, Salvatore Rizzello and Alfons Corteacute;s. *Examines the impact of cognitive science growth on the economics discipline *Contributors represent a wide variety of economic thought and tradition *Looks ahead to the future of economics

eview of Peter Norton's "Fighting Traffic: The Dawn of the Motor Age in the American City" This review of mine was just published in Isis, volume 100 (June, 2009), 426-7: Peter D. Norton. Fighting Traffic: The Dawn of the Motor Age in the American City. (Inside Technology.) xii + 396 pp., illus., figs., index. Cambridge, Mass./London: MIT Press, 2008. $35 (cloth). During the early 1960s, as the Golden Age of the automobile in America began to wane, several commentators, including Lewis Mumford, raised the critical question of whether the automobile existed for the modern city or the city for the automobile? How and when the automobile became central to urban life is deftly addressed in Peter Norton's Fighting Traffic: The Dawn of the Motor Age in the American City. This study is certainly one of the most important monographs focusing on the place of the automobile in American society within a historical context to appear in recent times, and interestingly supplements David Blanke's Hell on Wheels: The Promise and Peril of America's Car Culture, 1900-1940 (University of Kansas Press, 2007). In the process of telling his story, Norton convincingly demonstrates that it was people acting within interest groups who decided how the automobile would be used; this is not a tale of a technology having an irrepressible effect on the marketplace. Norton, who teaches in the Department of Science, Technology, and Society at the University of Virginia, blends an empirical study of a battle for urban streets with a theoretical analysis based on social constructivist theory. His effort is well balanced, clearly articulated, and fundamentally successful, with little of the dense abstract analysis that tends to drive a good number of general readers away from this kind of scholarship. Above all, Fighting Traffic is an engaging story that pits a number of diverse constituencies in a struggle over who would control city streets. These groups included pedestrians, safety refo

Beyond the city: the rural contribution to development David M. De Ferranti, World Bank 0 Resenhas World Bank Publications, 2005 - 245 páginas In Latin American and Caribbean history, rural societies have been at the center of both the origins of prosperity and of social upheaval. Rural communities have access to a wealth of natural resources, including arable land and forests, yet they face the highest poverty rates within countries. Characterized by low population densities and located far from the major urban centers, rural communities must overcome severe restrictions in their access to public services and private markets, even in some countries where public expenditures per inhabitant are higher in rural than in urban communities. Beyond the City evaluates the contribution of rural development and policies to growth, poverty alleviation, and environmental degradation in the rest of the economy, as well as in the rural space. This title brings together new theoretical and empirical treatments of the links between rural and national development. New findings and are combined with existing literature to enhance our understanding of the how rural economic activities contribute to various aspects of national development. The study is based on original research funded by the World Bank's Office of the Chief Economist for Latin America and the Caribbean. Of particular relevance is the interaction between agricultural and territorial development issues. The empirical findings also make substantial contributions to the debate over the appropriate design of public pol

nternational Handbook of Urban Policy: Contentious global issues H. S. Geyer 0 Resenhas Edward Elgar Publishing, 2007 - 348 páginas This first Handbook in a series of three original reference works looks at globally contentious urban policy issues from a wide variety of different angles and perspectives. Matters related to urban densification, population mobility, urban inequality and sustainability are analysed in a manner that will not only interest the advanced student but also the novice. Urban policy covers a vast field. This first volume combines chapters covering three broad themes: policy issues pertaining to the spatial aspects of the city; social and mobility issues; and issues of urban governance. The spotlight initially falls on urban structure, urban densification, the disappearing urban/rural divide, the urban economic landscape and the transformation of socialist economies. The Handbook then goes on to focus on migration, social mobility, crime, terrorism and social inequality. Finally, urban sustainability and urban governance come under the spotlight. Integration of the planning process, flexibilities in infrastructure and areas of neglect in environmental management feature strongly in this section of the Handbook. Books of this nature are often slanted in one particular direction: however, this Handbook's approach is different. Not only has the editor avoided shying away from politically sensitive issues but contributions have also been included that reflect distinct differences of opinion on politically sensitive issues - hence the volume's subtitle of 'contentious global issues'. As a Handbook, the chapters have been written not only for the advanced student and academics but also with undergraduate students in mind. The Handbook will appeal to scholars and researchers of geography and urban and development planning, demography and social science and environmental scientists for the focus on urban sustainability issues. « Menos

Unsustainable transport: city transport in the new century David Banister 0 Resenhas Taylor & Francis, 2005 - 292 páginas The book addresses the linkages between transport and sustainable urban development, from an analysis of the global picture through issues relating to transport and energy intensity, public policy and the institutional and organizational constraints on change. The central part of the book explores the linkages in more detail at the city level, covering land use and development, economic measures, and the role that technology can play. The final part looks for inspiration to events in developing countries and the means by which we can move from the unsustainable present to a more sustainable future.
