He is also an Associate at the Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion, LSE and a Research Associate at the White Rose East Asia Centre, University of Leeds. He was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Social Policy Research Centre, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (2002-2003) and also at the Asia Research Centre, LSE (2006-2007). Hyun Shin was awarded his BSc from Seoul National University in 1994, and worked in the construction sector for six years before arriving at the LSE to pursue his MSc (2000) and PhD (2006). His main research interests lie in critically analysing political and economic dynamics of contemporary urban (re-)development and its socio-spatial implications, with special emphasis on Asian cities. Alain Bertaud 阿兰 .柏图 A web page dedicated to the study of urban spatial structures It is necessary to bridge the gap between the 50 years of progress in urban economic research and the intellectual stagnation typically found in operational urban planning. It is unfortunate that the main audience of most urban economists are other urban economists rather than urban practitioners. Urban planners, meanwhile, are most of the time working without any reference to a theoretical framework. However, urban planners are taking day to day decisions that affect the lives and livelihood of millions of people. As an urban planner, my goal is to translate the theories (and sometime the jargon) and equations of urban economists into approaches and methods which can lead to concrete decision making in the everyday world of an urban planning office. The following reports and papers, always produced at the request of a municipality or of an urban investor (mostly the World Bank), illustrate these new approaches and methods. This is only a beginning. I am currently working on a book titled "Order without design". This book will use a data base developed over 35 years of urban planning work around the world. Turning Hydropower Social: Where Global Sustainability Conventions Matter Anders Hjort-af-Ornas 0 Resenhas Springer, 2008 - 145 páginas This book emphasizes the importance of involving stakeholders in data formation related to assessments of hydropower development. This is a prerequiste if projects are to be sustainable. The study targets policy formation after the UNCED and UNSSD conventions, and how a discrepancy emerges between policy and its implementation by using hydropower development as an extended case. At global and national levels new policies make it mandatory for implementing agencies to introduce or expand social considerations far beyond old practices. This calls for new emphases in problem areas as well as methods to optimize the access information required by policy for proper implementation. By drawing on about a dozen project cases, with among others Swedish Sida support, examples show how policy change has gradually influenced project design and implementation, but also how this change process is slow and reliant on approvement from the dominating technical and economic traditions for project assessment. The reader will find a detailed account giving insight into the reality behind policy changes as they have evolved during the last decade and gradually permeated current policy, as expressed in the call for new data formation methods. The book provides a unique account for sustainable development related policy enforcement. It shows how the sustainability drive combines with democracy and grassroot involvement to influence the stakeholder formation of project details.

Research Project Visions of the Role of Walking and Cycling in 2030 The Transport Studies Unit, University of Oxford, is a major partner in a £1.4m, three year project that aims to develop visions of sustainable urban futures. 'Visions of the role of walking and cycling in 2030' (Visions2030) seeks to revitalise the quality of walking and cycling in the UK and explore ways in which more people might be encouraged to use these modes in the future. Funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the research commenced in October 2008 and also involves the universities of Leeds, East Anglia, Salford and Manchester. It builds upon a growing recognition that walking and cycling can make a considerable contribution to sustainable transport goals, public health and the sociability of communities. The amount of walking and cycling in the United Kingdom has declined significantly over the last sixty years and previous research suggests that there are currently major obstacles preventing people from using these modes. Visions2030 is unashamedly radical in its approach to this challenge and will examine the means by which a fundamental change to both the quantity and quality of such 'active travel' can occur. Public engagement with the visioning process is a key priority, and a range of participatory tools will enable people to weave their own stories in and out of expert visions, thus opening up the possibility of a richer and expanded set of visions, grounded in real experiences. James Macmillen, research fellow at the Transport Studies Unit, comments: "Urban space is an extremely precious resource and our society needs to think seriously about how we would like our cities to function. Pushing ahead with mega-events: the housing outcomes of mega-event hosting on low-income families in China Contemporary cities increasingly compete for hosting mega-events such as the Olympic Games. While their economic benefits are often discussed, little attention is paid to the social impact of hosting mega-events on poor residents and changes in their housing conditions. To fill this gap, this pilot research examines the experience of mega-event hosting in three Chinese cities: Beijing and Tianjin in relation to the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, and Xining in Qinghai Province as the host city of annual international cycling race. The research finds that mega-event hosting is pursued as a catalyst for spatial restructuring and beautification in already rapidly urbanising cities. Poor residents and migrants in dilapidated neighbourhoods are the hardest hit by those projects related to mega-event preparation. The severity of negative effects induced by neighbourhood demolition tends to vary according to housing tenure and household registration status. Private tenants and migrants tend to be the most disadvantaged. Urban geographies are being rapidly and permanently transformed to accommodate the ever-expanding construction of skyscrapers, corporate offices and shopping malls. The traditionally public, historical and 'green' spaces in cities are encroached upon and appropriated, shrinking and disappearing as state property is sold developed into commercial mega-projects for private business interests. The migrant working class is also a subject to various powerful modes of alienation, even while the city enlarges these communities' frames of reference, dismantles provincial and rural prejudices, offers a range of new affiliations and professions, and new possibilities of individual freedom. And at the other end of the scale, cities themselves bloat into unsustainable entities via the influx of millions of impoverished rural migrants, who create their own precarious settlements, infrastructure and relational circuits in whatever corner they can find.For the last five years my art practice has involved experimenting with new genres of art across different populations in various working-class localities in Delhi. CALL FOR PAPERS RETHINKING URBAN INCLUSION: SPACES, MOBILISATIONS, INTERVENTIONS to be held in Coimbra, Portugal, 28-30 June 2012 With almost half the world's population living in cities, questioning the urban dimension of social inclusion and exclusion is imperative. Urban inclusion is increasingly influenced - and often constrained - by intertwined processes of economic globalization, state re-articulation, polarization and diversification of (local) populations and the political practices they add to the city. Educational, health and environmental inequalities, segregation, unemployment, lack of political participation, discrimination and the inability to deal with different forms of participation are all phenomena of exclusion with a local dimension but a multi-scalar nature. At the same time, acting towards social inclusion is developed around ideas, knowledge(s), experiences, resources and capacities which are (dis)located across an array of arenas and distributed among different actors. While traditional concepts and practices of urban inclusion centered on institutions and top-down decision-making seem inadequate to tackle this complexity, new ones are often in their infancy and may be in tension with more established policies. Contesting the centrality of the state and market pervasiveness, a new variety of counter-hegemonic positions and projects, and alternative visions of urban democracy and justice that inform bottom-up and participatory approaches to urban inclusion, have become popular in the Global South, while their transposition to cities in the Global North have met resistance or hardly gone beyond theorization.  The Conference aims to understand and ultimately rethink social inclusion at the urban scale, as the product of broader dynamics and the interaction of different actors and languages. Real Utopias: Emancipatory Projects, Institutional Designs, Possible Futures 2012 Annual Meeting Theme: 107th ASA Annual Meeting, August 17-20,  Denver, CO "Real Utopias" seems like an oxymoron: Utopia means "nowhere"-a fantasy world of perfect harmony and social justice. To describe a proposal for social transformation as "utopian" is to dismiss it as an impractical dream outside the limits of possibility. Realists reject such fantasies as a distraction from the serious business of making practical improvements in existing institutions. The idea of real utopias embraces this tension between dreams and practice: "utopia" implies developing clear-headed visions of alternatives to existing institutions that embody our deepest aspirations for a world in which all people have access to the conditions to live flourishing lives; "real" means taking seriously the problem of the viability of the institutions that could move us in the direction of that world. The goal is to elaborate utopian ideals that are grounded in the real potentials of humanity, utopian destinations that have accessible way stations, utopian designs of viable institutions that can inform our practical tasks of navigating a world of imperfect conditions for social change. Exploring real utopias implies developing a sociology of the possible, not just of the actual. This is a tricky research problem, for while we can directly observe variation in what exists in the world, discussions of possibilities and limits of possibility always involve more speculative and contentious claims about what could be, not just what is. The task of a sociology of real utopias, then, is to develop strategies that enable us to make empirically and theoretically sound arguments about emancipatory possibilities. This opens a wide and challenging agenda for sociology: Empirical studies of innovative contemporary institutions and practices around the world that in one way or another prefigure emancipato
