"the software known as Tor has become the most vouchsafed and developer-friendly method for using the Internet incognito. The free and open source program triple-encrypts your traffic and bounces it through computers around the globe, making tracing it vastly more difficult. Most Tor users know the program as a way to anonymously browse the Web."

"There is an interesting study out in the journal PNAS: "Evaluating big deal journal bundles". The study details the disparity in negotiation skills between different US institutions when haggling with publishers about subscription pricing. For Science Magazine, John Bohannon of "journal sting" fame, wrote a news article about the study, which did not really help him gain any respect back from all that he lost with his ill-fated sting-piece. While the study itself focused on journal pricing among US-based institutions, Bohannon's news article, where one would expect a little broader perspective than in the commonly more myopic original papers, fails to mention that even the 'best' big deals are grossly overcharging the taxpayer. Delaware's governor, Jack Markell, announced a program called Getting to Zero. Its goal was to get all high-school seniors with an SAT score of at least a 1,500 (out of 2,400) on the SAT to enroll in college. In recent years, state data show, about 20 percent of such teenagers did not.

Intellectually rigorous work lives, thrives, and teems proudly outside conventional notions of academic rigor.
