Literacy is a continuous, multidimensional indicator of proficiency in using written language. This essay reviews several recent books on literacy, and suggests some profound theoretical issues about consumer behavior inspired by a sociocultural perspective on literacy. In particular, ties between literacy and six diverse research programs on consumer behavior are highlighted: responses to persuasion; affect and decision making; the meanings of products and brands; social marketing of health behaviors; consumption, identity, and resistance; and the impact of the internet on consumer behavior. In addition, questions both interesting and troubling about the impact of consumption on literacy are raised in the hope of encouraging future research. (Abstract taken from JSTOR.)

Rolls conducted a unique experiment to test the effect of varying plate sizes on the amount of energy consumed within the chosen servings. This experiment was conducted in a laboratory setting over the course of 2-3 weeks. It was found that there was not a correlation between plate size and the amount of energy consumed. Results did show that overall, men consumed more than women. This study is beneficial to my research because it analyzes the unique factor of plate size and how it relates to food consumption.

Marijuana is heavily repressed in the United States. There is repeated documentation that there are lower risks associated with marijuana use compared to alcohol consumption. Also our government spends billions of dollars yearly to fight the war on drug/marijuana. Socially the United States needs to reform laws to accommodate social and economic disputes. This article effectively attacks the problem in the United States with marijuana laws. This article entails the health risks and economic issues that can be resolved with legalization or decriminalization of marijuana. Medical documentation gives evidence of lower health risks with marijuana compared to alcohol.

The idea of media literacy prompts an increasingly divisive debate between educators who wish to protect children from the commercialization of global markets and those who challenge critical media studies as misguided, outdated, and ineffective. We have provided a historical overview of changing conceptions of media literacy as preparation and protection in market society, arguing that contemporary concerns about children's fast food marketing and sedentary lifestyles call for new approaches to the education of citizen-consumers in a risk society. Our case study demonstrates that a media education programme can provide scaffolding for children's critical thinking about their sedentary lifestyles and media consumption. This article gives insight on the association of marijuana and tobacco use. This is a major connection between these two because of the social similarities. They talk about the risks associated with smoking tobacco and marijuana and how with alcohol use these risks increase. With marijuana use on the rise many health related problems associated with cigarettes and alcohol are increasing. With statistical data taken this alcohol and tobacco problems are increasing yearly. This article give me some important insight on the relation of tobacco and marijuana use. There are many relations with alcohol consumption and tobacco use but marijuana and tobacco use are also very closely related. Tobacco use among Whites in regards to race is much higher than it is with Blacks and Hispanics. This is some important statistical information closely related to my topic. Tobacco and marijuana use are closely related.

There are many colleges students that engage in illegal alcohol and drug consumption. There had been a rise un marijuana and other illicit drugs used. Many colleges students claim they drunk and do drugs to relax. In 2005 the number of college students claiming to smoke marijuana climbed to 4%. This huge number of students helps support the rise in drug use on college campus. This is becoming a problem among college students. This article is the best one I have found it talk about the rise of drug use among college students. It talks about statistical data and the percentages of use among college students. This is more statistical data that just show that there is more needed to be done with college students and drinking these days. With this in mind I will out these into my article and use them accordingly.

This study analyzed the acceptance of a school cafeteria based program called "Kid's Choice", where students are given increased amounts of healthy vegetables and fruits in their lunch meals. Results were compared between those who were overweight and those considered average-weight. The study found that both groups were equally accepting the program and would continue the program after the 1 month trial. This study would help my research because it shows that children who are overweight are, in fact, willing and able to make positive changes in their diets to improve their body weight and overall health.
