This web page goes into detail about the digital divide which is talked about in Flew's article. This article is my favorite because it goes into detail about digital divide and when it happened and exactly why this happened. I feel this information is important to know which is why I am going to push it into our Diigo group.

D#2, HW#7 -- "Alter Ego: Avatars and their Creators", Robbie Cooper - 0 views

This is an article on the book "Alter Ego: Avatars and their Creators" by Robbie Cooper. The book explores photographs of real people and their online identities, also known as their "avatars." The book also taps into the connections between the two and what makes them different. I think it is very interesting to see how people want to be perceived online and then the real person hiding behind the virtual mask.

Though this may seem like a 'gimme,' this site provides the very platform by which this course has become possible. With a professor and students scattered far and wide in location and schedule, this site is convincing evidence of the power of the virtual worlds referred to by Flew. I am unlikely to meet any of my fellow students in person during this course, but I know in advance that I will make new friends and get to know them. Being able to obtain a higher education in a virtual online world is an amazing use of technology.

This website allows people to share there internet links. Based upon the link people receive social recognition. It is almost a form of social Darwinism in which only the best comments will survive.

I found this page to be rather interesting. It is more focused on the actual evolution of the internet versus the social aspect. However, because it shows the astonishing growth of internet usage over time it automatically has a social impact not just nationally but globally. With just a start of 4 computers in the U.S. to a current 440 million computers worldwide.

I'm sure YouTube is well known by all, however, I believe that it is a good example of a online community of people who share common interests, as well as other aspects addressed in the reading (trolling, spamming, pretending to be someone else etc.)
