Report touts explosive growth (and value) for energy efficiency programs - 1 views

  • Energy efficiency programs aren't new. They have been around for 30 years or more in many states, since the energy crises of the 1970s. But according to a new report from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), energy efficiency programs have grown and developed to become "a low-cost, high-value energy resource for electric utilities and their customers."

Nexans' innovative overhead line technology helps Brazil solve electricity transmission... - 1 views

  • Resulting from a five-year development programme involving Nexans’ technology centres in France and Belgium, this innovative overhead line technology consists in a thermal resistant aluminium conductor wrapped around a composite carbon core. Compared with a traditional ACSR (Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced) which uses steel core, the composite carbon core of the same diameter is much lighter and 50 percent stronger. Most importantly, the carbon core’s coefficient of thermal expansion is roughly one tenth of that of steel, so it expands (and ‘sags’) much less when heated by the high current flowing in the conductor, enabling the vital safety clearances to be maintained between the conductor and the ground, even at high operating temperatures.

Flexible Aluminium Power Cable For Wind Turbines - 1 views

  • Aluminium power cable technology for wind turbines took a giant leap forward today with the introduction of HELUKABEL’s HELUWIND WK POWERLINE ALU. This diesel locomotive (DLO)-like power cable is made of finely-stranded aluminium and is highly flexible, offering customers the performance capabilities of a standard copper cable, but at a fraction of the cost. “Since the POWERLINE ALU is made of aluminium its weight is reduced by nearly 50 percent, it is quicker and easier to install, as well as being less expensive than comparable copper power cables,” says Uwe Schenk, Global Segment Manager – Wind at HELUKABEL. “Given the uncertainty of the PTCs and the need for reducing turbine costs (manufacturing, installation and maintenance), the POWERLINE ALU is our attempt to further the development of the industry in the United States and Canada by making wind turbines more affordable.”

Japan - Sumitomo Electric to increase wire harness production - 1 views

  •
Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd (SEI) said it plans to increase the production of wire harnesses for automobiles by around 10% in the fiscal year ending March 2013. The company said this is to keep pace with the growing demand from emerging countries. In order to make this possible the company is investing an extra JPY16.5B (US$201M) to reach a record JPY77B (US$979M) for the year to add extra facilities and assembly lines at the company's existing plants located worldwide.

China - Electronics industry profits fell by 14% y-o-y in H1 2012 - 1 views

  •
Official data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology revealed that major electronic information manufacturing company profits declined by 14% y-o-y, reaching RMB122B in H1 2012. The decline in profits was attributed to weakening orders caused by the European debt crisis and slowing world economy. The number of electronic manufacturers reporting a loss over H1 2012 rose by 20.2% y-o-y, to reach 4,250, which is thought to be as a result of high financing costs.

A multi‐stakeholder approach to create a Responsible Aluminium Standard - 1 views

  • The ethical, environmental and social performance criteria that will compose this new standard are expected to be defined by 2014, following multi‐stakeholder consultation to ISEAL specifications. Once defined and publicly launched, the expectation is that aluminium industry organizations will want to adopt these criteria to produce, use or re‐use aluminium.

China - Downstream processors of copper in China enjoy rising utilisation rates in August - 2 views

  •
Shanghai Metals Market (SMM) reported that the average operating rates of copper cablemakers in China rose by 10 percentage points to reach 78.7% in August. Newly tendered contracts from the State Grid Corporation of China during July and August led to the production increase. Figures from the National Bureau of Statistics also indicate that cable output rose by 2.5% m-o-m to 3.53M km in August. In addition to this, an August survey of Chinese copper wirerod fabricators by SMM showed a 2 percentage point increase in the industry's average utilisation rate from the previous month, reaching 75%.

Electric bus induction charging trial - 1 views

  • Each vehicle will be equipped with enormous 130kw/h batteries – giving them a 100-mile range and a capacity equivalent to around six Nissan Leafs. The buses will receive regular top-up charges throughout the day from the three wireless charging points installed along the routes. Charge pads on the underside of each bus will sync wirelessly with pads installed under the road, in a process known as induction charging. Drivers will park over the pads for their 10-minute break, replenishing two thirds of the electricity used to cover the 12.5-mile route without interrupting the timetable. The consortium of companies behind the scheme – which include bus manufacturer Wrightbus, wireless charging firm Arup, bus operator Arriva and Milton Keynes Council – believe that the switch from diesel to electric will cut tailpipe emissions by around 500 tonnes every year. Running costs will also be slashed, as annual fuel costs for a diesel bus are around £23,000 per year compared to an estimated £10,000 for an electric one. And maintenance costs will be lower, too.

According to CRU's forecasts presented at the 9th World Copper Conference in Santiago, global copper consumption in 2009 is expected to fall by 2 to 3 million tonnes. This represents a 15-20% y-o-y plunge compared with 2008. The severe contraction is attributed to the global economic crisis and the freefall that many industries, such as the automotive sector, have experienced. In the first two months of 2009 total consumption of copper and copper alloy semis declined by 32% y-o-y, while that of copper wire and wirerod fell by 25% y-o-y. In the same period, insulated wire and cable decreased by 30%.

Chinese Copper Demand - Soft Despite January's Import Boom - 0 views

  •
Chinese refined copper imports in January amounted to 180,500 tonnes, up by 41.3% y-o-y. Copper scrap imports in January declined by 56.2% y-o-y to 184,400 tonnes gross weight. The consumption side of the red metal remains weak as all the major copper consuming industries are in decline. Building construction, the electronics industry, as well as the automotive sector are suffering due to the economic slowdown. As for the power industry, the Chinese government has allocated a 1 trillion yuan package for power grid investment in the next three years.

SEI to Supply Aluminium Wiring Harness to Toyota - 0 views

  •
Sumitomo Electric Industries, the Japan based wire and cable manufacturer, has announced plans to provide its newly-developed aluminium wire harnesses to Toyota, for use in the Yaris subcompact, from 2011. Although the new product in 20-25% larger than a conventional copper wire harness, it weighs roughly 40% less because aluminium is lighter, thus improving vehicle efficiency of vehicles. With the price of aluminium presently very low relative to copper, the new aluminium wire harness should also reduce costs.

China's Refined Copper Output Down 0.5% in August - 0 views

  •
Difficulties securing raw materials led to a 0.5% y-o-y drop in output of refined copper, to 320,000t, according to the National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBSC). A downturn in demand coupled with increasing raw materials prices has produced very difficult operating conditions, with one Henan-based trader commenting that, "unless the Shanghai copper price recovers, the fall in Chinese copper output is likely to extend until September." Over the first eight months of 2008, refined copper output increased to 2.47m tonnes, or by 15% on last year. However, some are beginning to question China's ability to sustain the rapid rate of growth it has shown recently, leading to a drop-off in demand.
