Italy - Eredi Gnutti Metalli sees recovery in brass rod but not in rolled products - 1 views

  •
Italian fabricator, Eredi Gnutti Metalli, said in an interview with Reuters that it foresees a slight recovery in brass rod output and further decline in rolled products for the construction sector, which has remained weak. The company plans to produce 110,000 tonnes of brass rod in the current fiscal year (2010/11), compared to 100,000 tonnes a year ago. So far its orders have been driven by restocking activity and it expects industrial demand to return to pre-crisis levels in 3 to 4 years without major shocks in the economy. The company's copper cathode purchase has been cut by 25% from pre-crisis level to around 12,000 tonnes to 14,000 tonnes a year.

This figure includes sheets and tubes, mainly used in automobiles and construction. Demand for copper products was supported by both local consumption and overseas shipments. This year's hot weather has boosted demand from the air-conditioner sector, where manufacturers have been building up inventories after robust sales in the summer.

USA - International Wire announced second quarter results - 0 views

International Wire Group announced results for the second quarter ended 30 June 2009. Net sales for the quarter were US$102.0 million, compared to US$199.9 million for the same period in 2008. The decline was due to a lower copper price and decreased volume. Operating income for the second quarter was US$1.3 million compared to US$10.9 million. China - Copper tube consumption is 'unexpectedly' good - 0 views

  •
Chinese copper tube demand is robust in Q3, primarily due to 'unexpectedly good' sales on air-conditioners and many distributors are running out of stock, according to local manufacturers. There are two main reasons for the high demand. Firstly the weather is hotter than usual this year with temperatures rising to 38 degree Celsius in many parts of China. Secondly, the demand for air-conditioners is being boosted by the government's home appliance subsidy scheme as well as local retailers' discounts on air-conditioner sales. This is going to have a positive effect on copper consumption as copper tube used in air-conditioners is mainly refined copper.

KME H1 copper, alloys product output down 30 pct - 0 views

  •
Italian leading manufacturer of copper and copper alloy products KME said that its H1 output dropped 30% to 218,000 tonnes from 313,000 tonnes for the same period a year ago. The company said that there is 'persistent uncertainty and fears that an impulse to industrial activity triggered by a necessity to rebuild stocks will not be sufficient to consolidate recovery.' Demand for copper semis has been badly hit due to the economic downturn as residential construction activities are halted. Demand from industrial production is also adversely affected by a slowdown in investments in new plants and machinery. However, a fall in copper prices earlier in the year helped easing substitution threats from cheaper materials, KME said. The company previously announced that its consolidated sales fell 45% year-on-year to €898.5m (US$1.29b) for the first half of 2009. Net loss was €20.1m, compared to €12.3m of net profit a year ago.

Luvata expects mid-2010 pick up in copper demand - 0 views

  •
Luvata, a copper semis fabricator, believes that even though destocking in the copper supply chain is over, a significant rise in demand is not anticipated until mid-2010. The company expects that Asia will be the first region to recover, followed by North America and Europe. As a result of destocking, Luvata has got used to operating at a lower level of stock, and therefore became more efficient in its production procedures. The company intends to keep operating at lower stock levels even in periods of growth. While demand before the summer showed some recovery signs, the company is now waiting for the autumn to see whether the positive trend will continue.

USA - Brush Engineered Materials Q2 sales declined 29% year on year - 0 views

  •
Ohio-based supplier of specialty copper alloy products Brush Engineered Materials Inc. reported second quarter results. Q2 2009 sales were US$174.1 million, 29% lower than the same period a year ago but an improvement of 29% from the first quarter this year. Net loss was US$0.8 million versus net income of US$7.2 million in Q2 2008. The Specialty Engineered Alloys segment reported Q2 sales of US$41.2 million, compared to sales of US$83.0 million the same period in 2008. Operating loss for Q2 was US$9.3 million compared to an operating profit of US$4.8 million a year ago. The decline in segment sales was primarily due to the effect of the severe global recession in key markets including telecommunications, computer, automotive electronics, oil and gas, aerospace and heavy equipment. A portion of the decline was due to lower metal prices. The company is foreseeing an improving order book and is expecting to generate a slight profit in Q3 this year with higher sales volume and positive impact from its cost-reduction activities.

China - Boost for copper as China plans auto and home appliance stimulus - 0 views

  •
The Chinese government said that it would expand an existing subsidy program to encourage the purchase of new vehicles and home appliances, thereby boosting domestic spending. China will now allocate 5B yuan ($733M) for owners of light trucks and passenger vans who upgrade to new models. It also plans to spend 2B yuan ($293M) to fund discounts of new purchases of home appliances when customers turn in old goods, which will possibly give support to domestic copper demand. The plan will apply to almost all household appliances, including air-conditioners, television sets, refrigerators, washing machines and computers. Exports of these have been weak and the plan will help local producers to de-stock more quickly.
