Heathrow Terminal 5 lighting - 0 views

  • The terminal is a vast building and houses the world’s largest  controlled-lighting system, with 120,000 light fittings and 2,600 sensors designed to switch them off when no motion is detected. The airport’s operators now plan to replace all the bulbs in one go with LEDs that are expected to last at least five years.

Terminating aluminum wire in automotive wire harness - 0 views

  • As cable harnesses are already among the most complex and heaviest components used in vehicles, any possibility for weight savings is an attractive proposition. A model calculation of realistic weight-saving potential was analyzed in an average mid-size car with a cable harness weighing just under 30 kilograms. For the substitution of Al wire for Cu conductors, exclusively larger cross-sections (>0.75 mm²) were analyzed, excluding the fine-signal conductors. Al conductors with the next-highest cross-section replaced the affected Cu conductors. Under these conditions, a purely computational weight savings of around 7kg was initially achieved. However, for the last decade in Germany, the solid battery terminals were already made of Al, so the actual potential for savings in this particular case study is 2-3kg per cable harness.

U.S.A. - Nexans awarded contract by Chevron U.S.A. Inc. to supply 42km of power umbilic... - 0 views

  •
Nexans, a leading global cablemaking company, has been awarded a contract to design, manufacture and supply Chevron U.S.A with 42km of power umbilicals and terminations for the Jack and St. Malo oil fields in the Deepwater Gulf of Mexico. In addition to the conductor which delivers a high voltage power supply, the power umbilical, which was pioneered by Nexans, includes a number of steel tubes, fibre optic elements and signal cables for control and monitoring purposes. By eliminating the need to transport and install separate power and control lines, the power umbilical significantly reduces transportation and installation costs.

NEC Electronics Introduces Low-Power 16-bit Microcontrollers - 0 views

  •
NEC Electronics America Inc. introduced to the Americas twenty-two new 16-bit All Flash microcontrollers (MCUs) for compact, low-power, battery-operated, and sensor-enabled systems. Based on NEC Electronics' high-performance 16-bit 78K0R CPU core, the new 78K0R/Kx3-L MCUs offer very low power consumption to extend battery life, and more on-chip integration to help reduce the size and cost of battery-driven and sensor-enabled systems, such as fire and security alarms, meters, industrial sensors, anti-shake digital cameras, handheld medical diagnostics devices, and data-logging and point-of-sale terminals. In addition to low power consumption, the new lineup offers high-performance on-chip oscillators, built-in circuits for sensor functions, and extended system operating time. "As environmental awareness has grown, energy-saving systems have become particularly reliant on MCU technology," said Jim Trent, Vice President, Multipurpose Microcontroller and Automotive Group, NEC Electronics America. "Over the past several years, NEC Electronics has delivered many ultra-low-power 8- and 32-bit MCUs that have met the demand for energy efficiency. With the introduction of the new 78K0R/Kx3-L devices, however, NEC Electronics is now delivering the benefits of energy efficiency in its 16-bit products."

Japan - Mitsui Mining and Sumitomo Metal to join their copper and alloy businesses - 0 views

  •
With a view to cutting operating costs, Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co. and Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. are planning to combine their copper and alloy businesses. The new joint venture will consist of equal shares of the two companies and will be Japan's biggest brass strip maker. Major end-use applications include terminals and connectors for cars and electronic components. According to the plan, the joint venture will cease some sales units and purchase raw materials on a joint basis. It is anticipated that annual cost savings will amount to 1B yen (US$10M).

Wireless Connectivity Cuts the Cord - 0 views

  •
"Copper interconnects have served the electronics industry since its infancy. Wire terminated with separable connectors enables equipment to be efficiently assembled as well as deliver power and signals to/from the host of electronic devices we take for granted today, but change is brewing. The explosion of mobile devices has begun to alter traditional connectivity with demand for interfaces that free the device from the tether of signal and power cables."
