    Nexans the leading cablemaker has won a contract from Almabani to supply special airfield lighting cables for King Abdul Aziz International Airport (KAIA) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The contract includes the supply of 1,500 km of 5kV easy-to-install and watertight primary cables to connect the power network to the lighting transformers located on runways that power the airfield lights. Deliveries of the cable manufactured at Nexans' Lyon, France plant, began in 2008 and continue in 2009.

    Taihan Electronic Wire Co., South Korea's second largest wire and cable maker, announced on 29th November that it had successfully secured a US$44M contract to supply and install power cables in Saudi Arabia. The deal, which will involve laying 13.4km of 380kv high voltage cable, will provide the power infrastructure connecting Jeddah's international airport to a substation in the northeast of the city. The latest deal adds to the company's strong overseas sales in 2012 which have totalled US$250M, a 20% increase on 2011.

  • the Cuban government is finally allowing general consumers to buy various electronics, including DVD players and computers, for the first time. Only companies and foreigners were previously able to buy computers, while the looming threat of terrible Hollywood movies had forced Cuban authorities to seize DVD players at the airport. The change is due to "the improved availability of electricity," and Cubans can look forward to also picking up microwaves, 24-inch televisions, and rice cookers to plug into the new juice. Of course, it's not all flip flops and high-fives: air conditioners will not be available until next year, and the deadly menace known as the toaster will be restricted until 2010.
