Readworks.org is a reputable source of excellent lesson plans and reading passages focused on teaching reading comprehension. This fall, they are developing over 1000 new CCSS aligned and Lexile-leveled non-fiction and literary passages and question sets. This free resource will be an excellent supplement for teachers.

In a press release on Monday, August 19, PARCC, the assessment consortium developing the CCSS tests, announced the release of additional paper-based sample test items in ELA and math. This is great news for us as we work to implement CCSS and PARCC-like assessment in our classrooms. On the PARCC website, you will see a list of links for each grade level and subject in the left sidebar. Visiting each link brings you to a page with a table describing the kinds of tasks that will appear on the PARCC assessment. Links to the sample items are within this table. This brand new FREE service provides excellent news-style current event articles on a variety of topics that are written at multiple levels of text complexity. You can adjust the Lexile level of the text with a few clicks! Teachers can create student accounts and assign texts. Each text has a built in quiz linked to CCSS standards. This tool should be very valuable for any teacher trying to meet CCSS standards for informational texts while addressing differentiated reading needs among her students. Excellent free units made available from Odell Education. Units on Close Reading and making evidence based claims for grade 6-12 are available here. All materials are included including the texts. Each unit is designed to be 3 weeks long. The materials and models here are very well aligned to Common Core standards and could serve as excellent models for teachers adapting to teaching the new standards.
TED Education is the education site for the TED organization. TED has short videos showcasing some of the most interesting and inspiring thinkers, innovators, scientists, and artists on the web. In this case, James Watson, one of the discoverers of DNA explains the circumstances of his discovery. TED Education lessons provide lesson plans to help students think and write critically about the media, an important skill in CCSS.

The site provides a wealth of resources for assessment and teaching for common core standards.
