It is our task to provide the resources needed to these individuals to gain satisfaction and a sense of wellbeing. Lastly, the document provides ideas and information of alternate ways of thinking, communicating, as well as myths both positive and negative to better assist us in our learning process.

This PDF document was part of a training course provided by Kansas Association of Homes and Services for the Aging. This particular document outlines various psychosocial needs of the elderly, and various strategies health care professionals can utilize to help provide more person-centered care. Psychosocial needs/issues can arise as a result of the many changes that can occur during older adulthood. This article outlines seven changes that frequently occur in older adulthood that can present potential issues when individuals do not adjust to the changes. For instance, family changes occur as parents who used to care for their children are now being cared for by their children. Individuals may face retirement, and no longer have a sense of who they are without a job title. Older adults may experience an awareness of their mortality as loved ones die and their health declines. Individuals may lose their spouse and companion. Fear of loss of independence may set in as persons experience a decline in health and their physical abilities. Poor adjustment to changes in income after retirement can trigger psychosocial issues. Finally, loneliness may occur as children become busy, older adults do not drive, and spouses and friends die. All of these various factors can create psychosocial needs within a person's life. This article does a great job at not only defining why psychosocial issues may be present within this population, but also provides strategies to help older adults find joy in their lives again and help address their psychosocial needs. For instance, the article focuses on building on lifelong interests and offering new activities that an individual can engage in for pleasure.

Functional Assessments Used by Occupational Therapists with Older Adults at Risk of Act... - 1 views

  •
The results of this current research support the SMAF as a suitable assessment for use with older adults with moderate construct validity and responsiveness and a clear minimal detectable change of five, being defined. The SMAF focuses on activity limitation experienced in everyday activities, mobility, mental functions and communication. Any limitations in activities/ abilities are then considered in reference to available resources to determine if any handicap exists. Another assessment that may be suitable for use with older adults, especially as an outcome measure in community populations of older people, is the AMPS with moderate evidence for construct validity and responsiveness to change. Assessments were often found to have been modified to suit the needs of the clinical environment or to shorten the tool, but the actual modifications were poorly reported in the papers.Once the assessment is modified, the assessment can no longer be assumed to hold equivalent measurement properties to the original. The lack of information regarding the assessment tools measurement properties signals the need for further research including validation in older populations.

Review of Cognitive Assessments for Older Adults - 1 views

  •
The aim of this study is to identify and evaluate the psychometric properties of cognitive assessments for older adults. Assessments were categorized based on length of time to assess, less than or more than 30 minutes and body function versus activity or participation. The authors reviewed evidence to determine the strength of each assessment (validity, reliability, sensitivity, specificity) and the amount of literature supporting the use of these cognitive assessments for older adults. The following assessments demonstrated the best rigor for psychometric properties for cognitive assessment with older adults: for body function(under 30 minutes): the MMSE and 3MS, for body function (over 30 minutes): the Cognistat and CASE/Pecpa, and for the activity and participation level: the AMPS.

Early Functional Limitations in Cognitively Normal Older Adults Predict Diagnostic Conv... - 1 views

  •
Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to record brain activation during cognitive testing in older individuals living in residential care communities. Using fNIRS, brain signals were recorded during a series of computerized cognitive tests, including a Symbol Digit Coding test (SDC), Stroop Test (ST), and Shifting Attention Test (SAT). An association between advanced age and increased activation in the right middle frontal region was observed during the incongruent ST. Although none of the participants had clinical dementia based on the short portable mental status questionnaire, the group performance was slightly below age-normed values on these cognitive tests. These results demonstrate the capability for obtaining functional neuroimaging measures in residential settings, which ultimately may aid in prognosis and care related to dementia in older adults. If families are educated to look for signs for family members that have dementia they are easily able to discuss long term planning and prevent adverse events due to impaired cognition.

Psychosocial Health in Geriatric Care - 1 views

  •
This article discusses psychosocial health in the geriatric population. It talks about why psychosocial health is important and how clinicians who are going to be working closely with the geriatric population need to be prepared to address both physical and psychosocial concerns.
  •
This article defines various aspects of emotional and social problems that may be present within older adults. These psychosocial issues are not only prevalent within the geriatric population but are also associated with higher morbidity rates and can drastically influence the progression of disease, daily functioning, and mortality. The article defines some of the repercussions that may occur when older adults are under psychosocial stress. Thus it is important as occupational therapy practitioners to pinpoint and address these needs early in order to help older adults, and anyone for that matter, achieve psychosocial health, as decreased psychosocial wellbeing can greatly influence overall health and quality of life.

Effect of a DVD Intervention on Therapists' Mental Health Practices With Older Adults - 0 views

  •
This article discusses the impact of an educational intervention in DVD format focused on strengthening the mental health practices of occupational therapists working with older adults in long-term care settings. Thirty occupational therapists were selected to participate in the pretest-posttest design. The therapists completed a knowledge and attitude questionnaire, as well as completed chart reviews of therapists' caseloads three months prior to watching the videos. After watching the DVD and three months had past, the therapists participating in the study completed the same knowledge and attitude questionnaire and chart reviews once more. The results showed a 20%-30% increase in correct answers on the questionnaire. The chart reviews also showed that therapists spent increased time addressing patients' mood, depression and cognitive impairments, as well as conduct more screenings for depression and cognitive impairments. The conclusion stated that educational interventions with therapists could significantly increase the quality of mental health practices in occupational therapy.
