SLA is an inquiry-driven, project-based high school focused on 21st-century learning. SLA provides a rigorous, college-preparatory curriculum with a focus on science, technology, mathematics and entrepreneurship. Students at SLA learn in a project-based environment where the core values of inquiry, research, collaboration, presentation and reflection are emphasized in all classes."

The U.S. Department of Education, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and Education International (EI), the global federation of teacher unions, together with U.S.-based organizations-the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), Asia Society, the Council of Chief State School Officers(CCSSO), the National Education Association (NEA), and public broadcaster WNET-hosted the first International Summit on the Teaching Profession March 15-16, 2011, in New York. The summit was the first of its kind, designed to engage governments and teacher organizations in an intensive discussion about how to create a stronger teaching profession.
