"The first part of an assessment design is the most obvious; the student performance, or more simply referred to as the activity. This requires a student to show the teacher what they know or can do. The second part assessment design is often assumed or omitted; however, this part of the assessment is critical to optimizing alignment to the objectives, and provides valuable support towards student success. This critical component is the grading plan or better named the feedback criteria. As a teacher, we need to effectively communicate to our learners both a description of how they will perform an assessment activity as well as a description of how we will judge the quality of their performance. "Effective Classroom Assessment: Linking Assessment with Instruction Successful middle schools engage students in all aspects of their learning. There are many strategies for accomplishing this. One such strategy is student-led conferences. As a classroom teacher or administrator, how do you ensure that the information shared in a student-led conference provides a balanced picture of the student's strengths and weaknesses? The answer to this is to balance both summative and formative classroom assessment practices and information gathering about student learning. Assessment is a huge topic that encompasses everything from statewide accountability tests to district benchmark or interim tests to everyday classroom tests. 4 In order to grapple with what seems to be an over use of testing, educators should frame their view of testing as assessment and that assessment is information. The more information we have about students, the clearer the picture we have about achievement or where gaps may occur."

The Connecticut State Department of Education has partnered with the Leadership and Learning Center to provide professional development in Common Formative Assessments. Common Formative Assessments (CFAs) are periodic or interim assessments that are administered to all students in a grade level or course several times during the quarter, semester, trimester or entire school year. Teachers analyze student assessment results in Data Teams to plan and differentiate instruction. Such results provide predictive value as to how students are likely to do on each succeeding assessment in time for teachers to make instructional modifications.

Ohio schools are moving toward online assessments for their students which include interactive assessment items. These interactive assessment items have been enhanced by technology and in order for students to successfully complete these online assessments, they will need to be able to perform many technology tasks including: click/tap, scroll, plot points, drag/drop, type with text editor, select object, select text, use video player, select area, drag/slide, deselect, highlight, use ruler, use calculator, use protractor....

"Intentionally involving your students in the assessment process helps students to become lifelong learners.  Peter Senge (2000) says, "A cornerstone of lifelong learning is the capacity for objective self-assessment - the ability to judge for yourself how well you are doing."  Similarly, William McKeachie (2011) relates the importance of helping students become lifelong learners to faculty members who intentionally involve students in self-assessment:"
