Truth and Veriphobia in Sports Research - 0 views

  •
There's a growing condition affecting educational and sports research: a general aversion to talking about truth and its associates, such as fact, knowledge and evidence. This aversion is so widespread in some settings that it is taken for granted. I've learned from first hand experience that questioning the assumption that truth is a big con leads to looks of disorientated alarm. In one of those rare articles that people actually talk about occasionally I called this position 'veriphobia', or fear of truth. I've since learned from colleagues better educated than me that I've managed to compound Greek and Latin words, which apparently is a linguistic crime. But I still think it is a neat word!

Life after sport? Counseling Professional Athletes Facing Retirement - 0 views

  •
Early research into withdrawal from sport focused on problems faced by young athletes retiring from full-time sport. Issues were identified which can affect the quality of the transition, laying the groundwork for later research into the retirement of professional athletes, and influencing approaches being taken by sports federations and others to helping sportsmen facing retirement. This article examines the main trends and offers some conclusions.

Practitioners in sport and exercise that aren't tied to a University don't have ready access to the latest databases and journals. When someone blogs on a subject that relates peer-reviewed research to the practical world of sport or exercise, it is very helpful. It gives someone like me a reference to explore.

Putt With Your Brain - Part 1 - 0 views

  •
If Mark Twain thinks golf is "a good walk spoiled", then putting must be a brief pause to make you reconsider ever walking again. With about 50% of our score being determined on the green, we are constantly in search of the "secret" to getting the little white ball to disappear into the cup.Lucky for us, there is no shortage of really smart people also looking for the answer. The first 8 months of 2008 have been no exception, with a golf cart full of research papers on just the topic of putting.

Anxiety Interpretation (Anxiety Direction) vs Reversal Theory in Sport Psychology? - 0 views

  •
I received my copy of The Sport and Exercise Scientist in the post today, and gave the cover the usual cursory glance. My scan picked up an interesting question: "Is studying anxiety interpretations useful for sport and exercise psychologists?". So I thumbed through and found a rather interesting debate between two sport psychologists, staged by email and reprinted for the benefit of others. The debate gave me heart and caused me frustration, because while it opened up an important avenue for research and practice, they both missed the fact that a theory has been in place for over 25 years that adequately addresses all of the issues raised. That theory is Reversal Theory (Apter).

Does Practice Make Perfect? - 2 views

  •
For years, sport science and motor control research has added support to the fundamental assertions that "practice makes perfect" and "repetition is the mother of habit". However, many questions still exist as to exactly how we learn these skills. What changes happen in our brains when we teach ourselves a new task? What is the most effective and efficient way to master a skill? Do we have to be actually performing the skill to learn it, or could we just watch and learn?

Could it be? A 10K Running Plan that actually works - 1 views

  •
While I hesitate to start this way, I do want to make it known that I am a former Division 1 cross country and track runner. This is not said to pump my own ego, but to show that I have a good knowledge base when it comes to running programs. After many weeks or research, I could not find a 10k running plan that actually works. For months, I scoured the internet, read running articles, magazines, and anything else I could get my hands on, but struggled to find a complete running program 5k or 10k. There were many running for beginners programs but nothing that was as complete as I was looking for. I wanted a 10k running program that was thorough and had all the information I was looking for. Each running schedule that I found, whether it be for a 10k or 5k seemed to missing something. Initially when I came out of mini-retirement, I decided that a 5k would be my first conquest, but I really wanted to train for a 10k. There are many things to look at when deciding on a 10k running plan. Length, experience level, and the results runners have gotten are all things to look at. While I understand that a running program for beginners is different than a 10k running program for advanced individuals, I wanted to make sure I got a plan that covered all the bases. When I finally thought I found a 10k running program I liked, there was something it was missing. A friend and former teammate finally referred me to RunLovin.com. Upon entering the site, it seemed like they had thorough content, but I still wasn't sold. Since there is a lot of free information on the internet, I thought, why should I pay for it? I signed up for sample program and got my answer. They emailed me a synopsis, and some actual wording from the purchased 10k running program. I was immediately impressed with how complete their program is. Although it was a 10k running schedule, they had information about shoes, nutrition, equipment, and injury prevention to name a few. What finall
