Learn to Love A.M. Exercise - 0 views

  • I am not a morning person.
    • Paul McCarlie

      neither am I
  • “Top Ten Reasons” for getting up with the early birds to get moving: Exercising early in the morning "jump starts" your metabolism, keeping it elevated for hours, sometimes for up to 24 hours! As a result, you’ll be burning more calories all day long—just because you exercised in the morning.
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • Exercising in the morning energizes you for the day—not to mention that gratifying feeling of virtue you have knowing you’ve done something disciplined and good for you
  • Studies have shown that exercise significantly increases mental acuity—a benefit that lasts four to ten hours after your workout ends. Exercising in the a.m. means you get to harness that brainpower, instead of wasting it while you’re snoozing.
  • Assuming you make exercise a true priority, it shouldn’t be a major problem to get up 30 to 60 minutes earlier—especially since regular exercise generally means a higher quality of sleep, which in turn means you’ll probably require less sleep.
  • When you exercise at about the same time every morning—especially if you wake up regularly at about the same time—you’re regulating your body's endocrine system and circadian rhythms. Your body learns that you do the same thing just about every day, and it begins to prepare for waking and exercise several hours before you actually open your eyes. That’s beneficial because:  Your body’s not “confused” by wildly changing wake-up times, which means waking up is much less painful. (You may even find that you don’t need an alarm clock most days.) Hormones prepare your body for exercise by regulating blood pressure, heart rate, blood flow to muscles, etc. Your metabolism, along with all the hormones involved in activity and exercise, begin to elevate while you're sleeping. As a result, you’ll feel more alert, energized, and ready to exercise when you do wake up.  Many people find that morning exercise has a tendency to regulate their appetite for the rest of the day. Not only do they eat less (since activity causes the release of endorphins, which in turn diminishes appetite), they also choose healthier portions of healthier foods.  People who consistently exercise find, sometimes to their great surprise, that the appointed time every morning evolves into something they look forward to. Besides the satisfaction of taking care of themselves, they find it’s a great time to plan their day, pray, or just think more clearly—things most of us often don’t get to do otherwise.  Exercising first thing in the morning is the most foolproof way to ensure that other things don’t overtake your fitness commitment, particularly if you have a hectic family life. (It’s so easy to wimp out in the evening, when we’re tired or faced with such tasks as rustling up dinner and helping with homework.)  More than 90% of those who exercise consistently have a morning fitness routine. If you want to exercise on a regular basis, the odds are in your favor if you squeeze your workout into the a.m.  Non-morning people can always trick themselves in the a.m. Having trouble psyching yourself up for a sunrise jog? Do what I did—tell yourself that you’ll still be so fast asleep that you won’t even remember—much less mind!

When Too Much Exercise Becomes a Problem - 0 views

  • But while a little exercise is a good thing, taking exercise to the extreme can cause serious health issues, even death.
  • When few adults exercise regularly, and many struggle to find just 20 minutes to dedicate to a workout, it may be hard to believe that some people place exercise at the center of their lives
  • Compulsive exercise is more than a desire to get in the ultimate shape or manage one's weight.
  • ...16 more annotations...
  • Sufferers of exercise bulimia use excessive exercise to purge or compensate for eating binges or simply regular eating, often working out multiple times per day or for three or four hours at a time
  • Deep down, this disorder has more to do with control than it does the desire to fit into a smaller size of jeans
  • The scary thing about an addiction to exercise is that it creeps up gradually, usually among everyday people who start exercising, feel good afterward, revel in the calories they're burning, have a desire to get healthier or lose weight, and therefore start believing that more is better
  • Oftentimes, people who develop an exercise compulsion don't feel like there's anything wrong with what they do
  • Compulsive exercisers build their lives around working out and are genuinely distressed if they can't exercise as much as they feel they need to (or should be)
  • Exercise bulimia is similar, but involves eating binges. People who suffer from exercise bulimia often binge on food and then exercise obsessively to make up for it. Exercise becomes a way to control calories, justify eating, and punish oneself for eating too much or eating the "wrong" things.
  • In general, exercising for up to 60-90 minutes, most days of the week is reasonable and healthy for most people as long as recovery and downtime is built in.
  • Exercise is usually a good thing, but rest and recovery are very important, too
  • Excessive exercise can weaken the body and cause a host of problems, including: Fatigue Suppressed immune system Lack of menstruation (amenorrhea) in women due to a lack of body fat Reproductive problems Heart problems (such as muscle wasting and rhythm problems) Dehydration Arthritis Osteoporosis Stress fractures and sprains Kidney failure
  • Getting a Diagnosis
  • Compulsive exercise and exercise bulimia can affect both men and women of all ages, races, body types and weights.
  • A doctor may ask if the person is exercising and get the right answer (yes), never knowing the extent to which the patient is actually jeopardizing his or her health by taking exercise to the extreme
  • A physician may first suspect a problem if a woman stops menstruating due to a drop in body fat, which affects estrogen levels, but the condition may be virtually undetectable in men whose body fat levels can be much lower without creating any health problems.
  • Treatment Options
  • Studies have found that sufferers often come from families where food was used as a way of controlling behavior and battles surrounding food were common
  • Traditional treatments for exercise bulimia include support groups, cognitive behavior therapy, psychotherapy, and/or medication, such as anti-depressants.

The Benefits Of Glucose When Working Out | LIVESTRONG.COM - 0 views

  • Glucose, which is transported by your bloodstream to organs and tissues after eating carbohydrates, provides an essential source of energy for both your muscles and brain when working out. As energy and glucose needs to increase with exercise, it's important to eat enough carbohydrates in order to fuel your workouts. Having low blood glucose levels during exercise harms performance and can lead to physical and mental fatigue, sometimes resulting in weakness, dizziness and hypoglycemia. Glucose also prevents the body from using protein for energy.
  • When glucose isn't needed for immediate energy, the body stores it as glycogen in the liver and skeletal muscle. Glycogen stores are especially important when working out, as the body's energy demands may exceed the amount supplied by glucose in the bloodstream after prolonged exercise or when exercising with insufficient carbohydrate intake. According to Iowa State University, during low-intensity workouts, glycogen stores can be used to increase glucose levels in the bloodstream for as long as 90 minutes -- whereas during high-intensity exercise, glycogen stores provide energy for only about 20 minutes. Active people therefore need to replenish glucose regularly by eating plenty of carbohydrates. However, in less-active people with adequate glycogen stores, additional glucose is stored as fat.

THE ROLE OF RED MEAT IN OUR DIET - 0 views

  • Red meat has played a significant role in human evolution and remains a core food in most people's diet Red meat is naturally nutrient rich and provides so many of the essential nutrients our body requires for optimum health. Red meat is full of goodness; it tastes great, is extremely versatile and it deliciously satisfies appetites, whether eaten as part of a main meal or a snack. The goodness found in red meat Often, we are not aware of all the many nutritional benefits to be found in the food we eat and red meat is probably one of those foods. However, it is a truly amazing source of so many nutrients that are essential for healthy bodies: Protein Red meat is a significant source of high-quality protein, providing all the essential amino acids necessary for healthy body functioning and particularly important for growing children. The protein in beef and lamb is highly digestible - around 94% compared with a 78% digestibility in beans and 86% in whole wheat. Iron Red meat is a very rich source of haem-iron which is needed to form haemoglobin which carries oxygen in the blood around the body. Oxygen is essential for producing energy from food to help the body function. The haem-iron in red meat is well absorbed compared to non-haem iron in plant foods. Zinc Red meat is a good source of zinc; an essential nutrient for the immune system, growth and wound healing. The zinc in red meat and other animal foods is better absorbed than from most plant foods. Omega-3 fatty acids After fish, red meat has the second highest contribution of omega-3 and is an important natural resource of this nutrient. Omega-3s are essential to the healthy functioning of the nervous system and important to heart health.

How Much Protein And Carbs Should You Eat Before Workout? | LIVESTRONG.COM - 0 views

  • If your workout is the key to your dream physique, then your diet is the key to your most effective workout. The food you eat is directly tied to the way your body performs, and an under-performing body won't burn as many calories or build as much muscle as one that is perfectly fueled.
  • the most important factor is the mix of carbohydrates and protein.
  • No matter what volume of food you consume, dietitian Christopher Mohr recommends 5 g of carbs for every 1 g of essential amino acids -- about 1.6 g of a complete protein will provide 1 g of essential amino acids. Consuming these nutrients before your workout allows your body to take advantage of workout-induced increased blood flow to establish the amino acids in your muscles while boosting blood sugar for steady energy.
  • ...10 more annotations...
  • Whatever you decide to eat, keep the 5:1.6 g carb-to-protein ratio in mind.
  • Obviously, the closer you get to your workout time, the smaller the meal should be
  • Many protein shakes and sports bars are designed specifically as pre-workout nutrition and have the precise nutrient ratio you need. They also have the added advantage of being portable, which can be convenient for those who hit the gym on the way home from work.
  • If you are stuck without your favorite supplement at hand, fat-free chocolate milk will suffice -- according to Mohr, it provides the exact carb-to-protein ratio as a pre-workout shake. The fat-free part is important though -- fat digests slowly and can weigh you down when you least need it.
  • Supplements are simply convenience products, and are not necessary to good nutrition. You can get the same benefit from whole foods, but this requires more planning and label reading. Fat-free yogurt with fruit and granola works, as does a whole-grain bagel with peanut butter.
  • Timing is important -- even the perfect meal can leave you flat if you eat it too early or weigh you down if you eat it too late
  • The actual amount of carbs and protein you eat depends upon how much time will elapse before your workout.
  • f your only pre-workout nutrition is a regular meal, eat it about three or four hours before you exercise so the food has time to digest. Otherwise, your full stomach will be susceptible to upset, and the nutrients won't be available in your bloodstream when your body needs them. Smaller meals can be eaten two or three hours prior, but stick to a small snack if you only have an hour to go.
  • Supplements are by far the easiest way to ensure you get the proper ratio in an appropriately-sized food source.
  • For a larger meal, a turkey sandwich on whole grain bread with lettuce and tomato is a nearly perfect pre-workout meal, and bananas or fruit juice can be a last-minute snack for quick energy.

Bodybuilding.com - The Best Time To Take Your Supplements. - 0 views

  • Creatine - Learn More Best taken 1/2 hour or so BEFORE a workout and again RIGHT after a workout. What I do is take a creatine/juice/protein drink about a half hour before a workout and than another shake right after. This "bracketing" technique helps set up an anabolic (muscle-building) state for your muscles and helps prevent muscle breakdown from a workout (catabolism). Other than these 2 opportune times, you can add another creatine serving or two any time throughout the day. I usually recommend 25 to 30 grams of creatine on a loading phase and 10-20 grams a day on a maintenance phase.
  • Glutamine - Learn More Definitely take glutamine right before bed. This is where the overwhelming research shows the value of glutamine raising growth hormone levels significantly by taking 5 grams before bed. Also, another great time is upon waking, when your muscles have been without significant nutrition for up to 6-8 hours. Another good time for glutamine is about a half hour or hour after working out. This helps in the recovery/recuperation process from demanding workouts. So, creatine definitely before and after your workout and glutamine right before bed and right upon waking.
  • The best times to take ANY protein drink or protein supplements are as follows. I've listed them in order of importance, so based upon what you can afford, start at the top of the list and work down. When Should You Take It? The most important time is right after a workout. Your muscles are like a sponge and need instant nutrition for muscle recovery and growth. Right before bed. You're about to sleep for 6 to 8 hours. That's a long time without protein. Could you imagine going throughout your day (when awake) not eating 6 to 8 hours? Right before bed is important. Right upon waking. Same thing, you've just gone 6 to 8 hours without proper nutrition. Your body needs protein quick. Half hour before a workout. This sets up the "anabolic window" before your workout and provides your muscles with adequate nutrition so that the effects of weight training (weight training breaks down muscle-called catabolic) are not as severe.

How Important Are Warm Up Sets In Bodybuilding? | LIVESTRONG.COM - 0 views

  • Warm-up sets are an important part of your bodybuilding routine regardless of your experience level. Because warm-up sets involve a relatively small amount of weight, they are a safe means for beginners to learn the correct form for an exercise.
  • For more advanced bodybuilders, performing either two or three warm-up sets, using progressively heavier weight, prepares the muscle for the work involved with your higher-intensity sets.
  • Performing a warm-up set begins the process of sending blood to the muscle you are training. A warm muscle is less susceptible to strains and pulls. During warm-up sets, your brain recognizes that resistance is being placed on your joints, and synovial fluid is released.
  • ...7 more annotations...
  • As a bodybuilder, your workouts are designed to promote hypertrophy, or muscle growth. According to Marc McDougal of Bodybuilding.com, to promote hypertrophy you should perform two warm-up sets. Your repetitions should be in the four to six range.
  • The amount of weight you should use in your warm-up sets is based on percentages of the weight you plan to use in your working sets.
  • For example, if you plan to use 200 pounds for 10 repetitions in your working sets, use 50 percent of that weight for your first warm-up set. Your second warm-up set should be 80 percent of 200 pounds, or 160 pounds.
  • If you are gearing your workouts for increasing your strength, you will be working toward improving your one-repetition maximum lift on various exercises. Consequently, you will be lifting relatively heavy weight with fewer repetitions. In this case, perform between three to five warm-up sets. Increase the weight on each warm-up set, and perform between one and six repetitions.
  • Avoid performing your repetitions during your warm-up sets too quickly. If you perform your repetitions too quickly on a cold muscle, you risk injuring yourself. The repetitions should move through a complete range of motion at a slow and controlled tempo.
  • For example, if you plan to do work sets of three repetitions with 250 pounds, the weight you use for your warm-up sets would be percentages of 250 pounds. Your first warm-up set would be 50 percent of 250 pounds, and you would perform five repetitions.

Bodybuilding.com - Ask The Ripped Dude: What Are Your 10 Top Ab Tips? - 0 views

  • FOLLOW A HIGH-PROTEIN, LOWER-CARB DIET. Your diet is essential in building a lean physique. It is important to consume 4- to-6 small meals per day; this helps to speed up your metabolism at an incredibly rapid rate. Although there are many different theories on meal frequencies, eating smaller meals more often will help the average person avoid overeating and will curb hunger.
  • FOLLOW A CONSISTENT WEIGHT-TRAINING AND CARDIO REGIMEN. This will allow you to burn fat through the day. Weight training helps you to burn calories after the workout and throughout the day while cardio burns calories during the workout. A combination of cardio and weight training will give you the optimal fat burning rate you need to stay lean.
  • DRINK A LOT OF WATER. If you're completely hydrated, your fat-burning rate will be optimum. To speed up your metabolism, drink at least 6-to-8 glasses of water per day.

  • MODIFY YOUR ABS ROUTINE. There isn't a specific abs routine that will work better than all others, but changing your abs routine will maximize the results.
  • UNDERSTAND THE TRUTHS AND MYTHS ABOUT ABDOMINALS. We all have abs. Unfortunately, some of us have to work harder than others to attain visible ones. Doing 1,000 sit-ups per day is not going to make your abs just magically pop out, but getting your body-fat levels very low will allow your abs to appear.
  • For a male to able to be see his abs, he has to be roughly at 12 percent body-fat and lower. For a female to see hers, she needs to be at roughly 14 percent and lower. If you can get your body-fat to those levels, you will start to see your abs.
  • A healthy breakfast is the most important meal for a reason - it jumpstarts your metabolism for the entire day. Not just any breakfast, though. Unless you want a muffin top, skip the muffins and opt for protein, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates. Emphasis on the protein. Can't go wrong with eggs.
  • BE COGNIZANT OF THE FREQUENCY OF YOUR ABS TRAINING. It is important to train your abs at least three times per week for a beginner and intermediate fitness enthusiast. For the advanced gym guru, train your abs about every other day to build them properly.
  • DON'T GET SMACKED BY SUGAR, STARCH AND SALT
  • IMPLEMENT A VARIETY OF CARDIOVASCULAR EXERCISES. Cardio helps you lose fat.
  • BELIEVE IN YOURSELF. If you believe you can do it, you will do everything necessary in your power to attain that goal. Your mind will help guide your fitness goals and if that goal is to attain great abs, then, provided you do the necessary work, it will happen for you.
