      I think this factor of prior knowledge of a subject matter is one of the most difficult things to contend with in the debate about standardized tests. If students walk in to a learning experience with this lack of prior knowledge it becomes very difficult for them to ever catch up to the test's expectations.
  • The New York State Education Department runs statistical analyses of its tests to look for gender, racial or socioeconomic bias, but it does not compare the performance of rural and urban students, partly because it is hard to isolate whether a disparity is the result of a lack of familiarity with an environment or is caused by other factors like socioeconomic status or quality of classroom instruction.

It may be neat if they could play it online and google search for answers. Might be a cool way to learn even more information on events we cover in class. It would be important to not just make this busy work (why I had word finds).

  • Historical origins In the earliest times the Hebrew year began in autumn with the opening of the economic year. There followed in regular succession the seasons of seed-sowing, growth and ripening of the corn (here meaning any grain) under the influence of the former and the latter rains, harvest and ingathering of the fruits. In harmony with this was the order of the great agricultural festivals, according to the oldest legislation, namely, the feast of unleavened bread at the beginning of the barley harvest, in the month of Aviv; the feast of harvest, seven weeks later; and the feast of ingathering at the going out or turn of the year. "Aviv" literally means "Spring". (See Exodus 23:14-17; Deuteronomy 16:1-16). It is likely that the new year was celebrated from ancient times in some special way. The earliest reference to such a custom is, probably, in the account of the vision of Ezekiel (Ezek 40:1). This took place at the beginning of the year, on the tenth day of the month (Tishri). On the same day the beginning of the year of jubilee was to be proclaimed by the blowing of trumpets (Lev 25:9). According to the Septuagint rendering of Ezek 44:20, special sacrifices were to be offered on the first day of the seventh month as well as on the first day of the first month. This first day of the seventh month was appointed by the Law to be "a day of blowing of trumpets". There was to be a holy convocation; no servile work was to be done; and special sacrifices were to be offered (Lev 23:23-25; Num 29:1-6). This day was not expressly called New-Year's Day, but it was evidently so regarded by the Jews at a very early period.

    This my second posting for Rosh Hashana. It is a fairly basic rundown of the holiday provided by Wikipedia. I believe it is useful for teachers to have a knowledge of and be able to explain the major religious holidays where classes or school events may be cancelled, or if some of their classmates may not be present in school.

They will then put it up on this cite and your students will have something to be uber proud of. This is another reason to make sure you photo document rad projects.

    This is the organization run by the author of "Fires in the High School Bathroom." As the only permanent staff are journalists and web designers (and the staff is tiny!). I believe they just collect and make available student stories (as well as apparently offering grants!) rather than actually participating or spearheading any projects themselves. They do publish works every so often - I believe collections of the things students have done.

      This sounds really great but I think we all know the reality. Local districts always freak out when they are asked to give up their discretion. Right or wrong, I really don't see things changing on that front.

      I'm always curious what these expert firms deem as good and bad, it all just seems so arbitrary. What does that firm even do? I feel like there are way too many hands in the cookie jar at this point, but that's policy making, oh well.

      I'm obviously not a math person but I would think math standards are pretty straightforward, there really aren't the same kinds of debates over content like Social Studies and English. I'm sure there is more to it, but that seems to be the impression I get.

      This is what I see as the main problem with standardizing content in English and Social Studies.....bottom line we will never agree, so get over it. I realize that is cynical but seriously, especially, with the whole multiculturalism, it just seems never ending. I plan on taking on a multicultural approach but I'm sure there would still be some multiculturalists that would criticize that I didn't go far enough.

    This website contains a great list of Historic Sites in DC - for example, I have bookmarked the page for the Old Stone House in Georgetown. If you select, "List of Sites" - you will be taken to a listing by neighborhoods of other historic sites in the DC area. This could allow you to search for places near your school that could be a great resource to incorporate into your lessons. Many, including the Old Stone House, offer tours throughout the day. The Old Stone House is also staffed by well-informed Park Rangers who are eager to share their knowledge.

    Well, it looks like a student in this group shared this in the past, but what a great website! I'll put up some more sticky notes. This website features a large number of primary source material of different media and is strong in its content. Beyond that, this site features information about the methods historians use (interesting to high school students, applicable to college students), a database of reviewed websites, lesson plans, syllabi, and teaching tips. A pretty comprehensive resource.

      I don't know if anyone else tried to grow tomatoes this year, but mine were killed by the current blight that is going around. That these blights still exists provides modern relevance to the study of the famine.

Rather than focusing on what it was like to be Lincoln, the lesson should focus on what is going on in the country. Nevertheless, I appreciate the lesson plan's attempts to have students interact with the history be taught.

      I think that along with his lack of triumphalism, Lincoln's scathing indictment of the institution of slavery should also be noticed by students. This speech, combine with his Gettysburg Address shows Lincoln's thought (changing thoughts?) and slavery and african American and would be interesting for the students to explore.

      This site could be used by teachers as a baseline, to discover their own prejudices and learn hwo to avoid them BEFORE teaching their class. There are many different "quizzes" on the site which claim to measure your level of prejudice/knowledge of it. Then they offer links about how to deal with these issues in the classroom. This site is a good way for teachers to start thinking about these issues, and is a good resource of some of these issues come up in a classroom and he or she does not know how to deal with it.

      This site is valuable because it gets teachers to consider the issue of pejudice in the classroom and offers them resources on dealing with this tricky issue. Because the site does not have lesson plans, per se, it could not be used for daily lessons in the class. However, the teacher could have the students look through the website and take some of the quizzes, and use this as a launching point for a discussion of these issues in his or her class. Therefore, this site could be an incredible valuable tool to teachers as a resource and as jumping-off point for a discussion on prejudice and other related issues.

      I found this information about Thomas Schelling's research to be very fascinating, I had never heard of it before. I would like to explore this idea more, that small incentives can lead to massive segregation.

The Civil War (Shelby Foote) He is considered a top scholar, along with James Mcphereson. If there are two names you should be familiar with for Civil War scholarship, they are it! My Brother Sam is Dead. You may have read this when studying the American Revolution, a great way to incorporate literature into the study of history. Thomas Jefferson & His Time (Multiple Volumes) TJ, enough said!

      Why fight it? It is well accepted in the education field that students learn in multiple ways. Specifically, students with learning disabilities should also be kept in mind. I know we are studying to be general educators but you will be dealing with IEPs and a working knowledge of special education must not be overlooked.

    I was at the National Book Festival yesterday, it was wonderful, great resources overall. They were really pushing eBooks and audiobook downloads and I think it is an important education trend we need to be aware of. The kids are becoming so tech-oriented, why fight it? We need to use it to our advantage.

      This is pretty much what happened in my High School. The only AP "classes" that were offered were AB and BC Calculus.

      More and more colleges ARE counting IB classes toward credit. I came into AU with 18.

      This is the MOST IMPORTANT DISTINCTION between an AP course of study and an IB course of study. As my IB coordinator used to put it, "AP is a testing system, IB is a learning system" and it's so true. I'm still using the writing and critical thinking skills I learned as a part of the IB program in my daily life.

    Like the other article I posted, this one deals with the IB program, but rather about it's possible implementation in a school district on Long Island (where I'm from.) It highlights all of the benefits of the program, where the other article highlighted the "weak" points of the course of study.
