Why most teachers don't know what they don't know. « My Island View - 1 views

  • Technology is the driving force behind most of the education innovation. It is impacting not only what we can do as educators, but it is also changing how we approach learning. These innovations may have not all reached the education journals yet, but they have been presented and are being discussed digitally and at great length in social media.
  • Information from technology may be easily accessed, but it is not yet a passive exercise. It requires effort and an ability to learn and adapt. These are skills that all educators have, but many may not always be willing to use. The status quo has not required educators to use these skills in a long time. Using these skills requires effort and leaving a long-standing zone of comfort in order to learn and use new methods of information retrieval.
  • They need to be the life-long learners that they want their students to be.

  • In order for teachers to better guide themselves in their learning, they need to know what it is that they need to know. They need relevant questions about relevant changes. Being connected to other educators, who are practicing these changes already, is a great first step.

When the Internet Goes Down: Banning Technology| The Committed Sardine - 1 views

  • nstead of banning the devices that we know our students love, we should figure out how to use them to engage our students. Rather than banning them from the classroom, we should be showing students how to use them appropriately.
  • Teaching students how to use those tools properly and finding a balance between technology and other hands-on methods of learning is what really makes sense

Professors at odds over technology's role in the lecture hall - The Globe and Mail - 0 views

  • But some professors say it’s traditional teaching methods – not the computers – that don’t belong in the classroom. To engage students, they argue, the way instructors use and talk about technology with their students needs to change.

Learning and Cognitive Load - Part Two - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  • fundamental understanding of Cognitive Load Theory is that there exists a limit upon our cognitive capacity and that once we exceed that capacity our ability to learn is impeded
  • Intrinsic Load is that which is inherent to the task at hand and is generally considered to be irreducible by adjustments to instructional methods.
  • Extraneous cognitive load is that which is not essential to the task or is added by the manner in which the task is designed or presented.

  • irresolvable paradox that, without writing, we would not have Plato's staging of this discussion nor any record at all of Socrates' encounter with Phaedrus or of the Socratic method, nor indeed would there have been an Athens, as such, to remember.

  • The move from a print-centric to a network-centric world? Is this globally significant? Does this revolution in human communication have a cultural dynamic?
  • In this universe, everything revolves around the publisher who controls access to the means of production.
  • Web 2.0, which allows all readers to become writers, is the end of publishing as we have known it since the invention of Gutenberg's printing press
  • Writers still have their dog-earred personal copies of books ready to hand, but now they also have all been issued keys to the globe's virtual Alexandria Library.
  • the advent of Web 2.0 is the sign of that the apocalypse is at hand and that what lies ahead is a shattering of all the organizing structures of contemporary reality

  • Some of the latest technology tools for the classroom, however, promise to ease the challenges of differentiating instruction more creatively and effectively, ed-tech experts say, even in an era of high-stakes federal and state testing mandates. Will the iPad revolutionize education? - ISTE Community - 0 views

  • The iPad however, provides an alternative method by providing a lower cost of entry, while allowing for student-centered instruction where students are able to both create content and access information anywhere, anytime.  The key for revolutionizing education is having educators who embrace this technology to change how they teach to create a learning environment where students, not teachers, are the focus of the instruction.
  • “Yeah it does all that and it’s a phone!”  Amidst a cacophony of reverent Oooh’s and Ahh’s, I unknowingly witnessed the birth of the Smart-Phone and the death knell of the PDA.  I bring this up because I recently was approached by someone who told me that our school should get rid of all PC’s and give everyone iPads.
  • but the tablet format could lead to changes in education.
