Study suggests pressure to publish impedes innovation | Inside Higher Ed - 2 views

Shortly after being awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013, Peter Higgs, of Higgs boson fame, said he doubted he would have gotten a job, not to mention tenure, in today's academic system. The professor emeritus at the University of Edinburgh said he simply wouldn't have been "productive" enough, with academe's premium on publication metrics.

Libraries and social media: the activity is important, not the tool - 3 views

  •
If we were playing a game of word association, what words would come straight to mind if I said 'social media'? The chance is that you'd say things like Facebook, Twitter, maybe LinkedIn or Pinterest. That's perfectly understandable, and in many ways that is what social media is - or rather, they are the platforms on which social media activities take place.

Walmart Used Defense Contractor Lockheed Martin To Monitor Employees - Consumerist - 0 views

How to Use Diigo - YouTube - 3 views

A little dated (uploaded in 2013) so missing some info on the new outliners features, but otherwise a good little introduction to the hows and whys of using Diigo.

Thanks, I found that useful - now I should use it more. I have been using just my "favourites" for keeping webpages, but I can see scope there for much better organisation. I wonder how other people keep and organise web pages. Obviously we're sharing them in this context as well.

https://www.det.nsw.edu.au/policies/technology/communication/socmed_guide.pdf - 1 views

  •
This document from New South Wales Education & Training provides social media guidelines for the department's employees. The value of social media is noted and employees are made aware of what is required for responsible use of social media for personal and professional use. While this is not a library policy, aspects could be adapted for library use. The guidelines are clearly summarised in large font on a single page and then followed up with more detail.

New Pew study finds that 57% of today's teens have made a new friend online - 0 views

If the younger generation is any indication of how people will live, work, and interact in the future, today's teens are media omnivores who will set new standards for social communication.

Libraries need to understand what their users are doing on the internet in order to interact with them and market themselves successfully.

St Francis/Holy Ghost School Student Parent Handbook - 4 views

  •
This 23 page handbook limits the social media policy of the school to three lines on page 20. While this is an example of a very simple social media policy is makes very clear what is unacceptable behaviour and the consequences of said behaviour. This policy is directed at students and parents. While this policy may not seem as comprehensive as some other examples, it has the advantage of not confusing readers with terms, definitions, scope etc. that readers may ignore entirely and gives a very clear message.

http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/access/white-paper-social-media.pdf - 19 views

  •
Abstract: "Social media is now widely used by librarians to fulfill a variety of objectives. Taylor & Francis has collated a range of opinion and data within this white paper to provide an overview of how social media is currently used by librarians, for what purposes, and to what effect. Our research program comprised focus groups in the UK, USA and India."
  •
Why study social media in the library? Social media has the potential to facilitate much closer relationships between libraries and their patrons - wherever users are based, and however they choose to learn about and access library services and resources. Current usage of social media by the library community generally remains ad hoc and somewhat experimental, but the uptake of these tools is accelerating, and they will likely play an increasingly important role in library service provision and outreach in the future. This white paper has been researched and compiled by Taylor & Francis to provide an overview of current practices relating to the use by libraries of social media, from a world-wide perspective, against which individual institutions can benchmark their own activities and be inspired to try new approaches. This white paper is just a start - we plan to build from this a central web-based resource on social media for the library community that will provide ongoing updates, in-depth case studies and best practice guides. We hope this will become a valuable, developing resource that librarians will access and contribute to, so the entire community benefits from sharing ideas and experiences.
