Schema.org - 0 views

  •
An interesting case of the big three search engines striking an agreement on structured markup data on web pages. If you really pay attention, you can watch the Internet evolve before your very eyes. (Internet Evolution sounds like a nice topic, huh?)
  •
Here's a couple or articles/op-eds on the announcement of Schema.org. One posits it may be a movement toward monopolization of markup data by Google: http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/is_schemaorg_really_a_google_land_grab.php ; the other that it's a boost for structured data: http://www.mkbergman.com/962/structured-web-gets-massive-boost/.
  •
Thanks, Rebecca. The first document you listed made my head spin a little bit. I wasn't totally familiar with the importance of a competitor to W3C markup data (I just assumed that Google et al.'s innovation would mean progress), but the polemical suggestions of "land grabs" made me think... wow, this is something to really pay attention to. Now that I'm reading Amanda's latest posts on Google vs. Facebook in a business context, I'm wondering if the big three move to Schema.org represents something like a defensive strategy (maybe even a land grab!) against Facebook jumping into the market. Maybe social media can do a better job of searching the web for relevant documents - an operation, as I'm beginning to understand, depends so much on markup standards (it's news to me that so many different options exist). I'm not sure I really understand what's going on here... but thanks for pointing out the complexities!

3 Geeks and a Law Blog: Enough with the "Social Media" already - 3 views

Does "social media" need rebranding, and if so, should it be split from "web 2.0" in general?

The term "modern communications infrastructure" is GREAT, especially when thinking about how to get people who are less likely to be using the stuff on their own to adopt new media techniques.

Social Media Controversy - 0 views

  •
This is an interesting article which highlights how large companies failed in the social media world. Because Web 2.0 is a fairly new concept, there are new "rules" for businesses to follow, or they may face damaging results.

I wonder sometimes how much this is "there are new rules" or is this rather "companies have forgotten everything about consumer relations," regardless of the medium in which they are communicating. Social media can be dangerous in that it can communicate instantaneously how someone is feeling, possibly in a negative light, unless that person is careful to project the "right persona."
  •
I think part of it is that the mistakes are made more glaring because they spread so quickly. That Motrin campaign might not have caused such as backlash if it appeared in women's magazines - even though it might have angered the moms, the response isn't as instantaneous and it doesn't build momentum in quite the same way. This was an excellent collection of articles, in my opinion, from the Economist last year. Most of the pieces came down on the side of social media as an opportunity, but it did talk a little about the loss of control, and worry about unforseen instances like the Domino employees. http://www.economist.com/node/15351002

The "Find the Future Game" looks cool too.
  •
I got to play with the Biblion app a couple of weeks ago at work; the developers, Potion (http://www.potiondesign.com/#/home) have created a whole slew of incredible educational exhibits/experiences. I think overall mobile apps are a really interesting direction for digital libraries - making them increasingly portable and interactive. I remember feeling a bit of excitement in my interaction with the materials from the Biblion app in which my own fingers, rather than an extension of them in the form of a mouse, turned pages, rotated objects, pressed buttons, etc. - a stark difference from interacting with digital libraries that contain similar types of artifacts. I'm interested to see how the web-version of the Biblion app compares - in physical presentation and affective impact.

Wow! I'm so glad that you posted this! This makes history so accessible and interesting, and I'm looking forward to installing it asap on my ipad right now! I wish I knew about it this past semester for my junior high American history class I taught; they would have loved this.

Social Media in Plain English - Common Craft - 5 views

love common craft videos...this one breaks down the concept of social media, explained using the metaphor of ice cream. both helpful & delicious. so social media is always interactive, while digital media doesn't necessarily have user-generated content? trying to get my definitions set as i do more searching...

maybe it's obvious...but i think it's confusing how online/digital/social are often used interchangeably, such as social networking/digital networking. so many terms...and many of them probably end up meaning the same thing anyway. trying to get those nuances
  •
Great video! Common Craft is always so helpful.
  •
Ummm...I'm thinking class trip to Scoopville!!!!
  •
I also thought this was an easy and helpful way to explain the definition of social media. As I am researching on the web, I'm finding that the same words are describing different things, and different words are describing the same things. It's getting me a little confused!
  •
It does get a little confusing and this was a great way to simplify social media tools!
  •
I definitely have to agree with the way common craft breaks down concepts and makes it understandable for the average Joe. When I'm trying to figure new techie things out or I'm trying to explain it to others, I often refer to this type of tool.

Psychology of Cyberspace - Identity Management in Cyberspace - 3 views

some psychological theories that describe and explain online identity formation...describes what parts of our personalities we tend to deliberately share, and how some of our actions aren't as controlled as we'd like them to be
  •
This was very interesting and helpful. I'm looking at online identities for the term project. I never really gave much thought to the idea that your preference for expressing yourself online is tied to your personality.
  •
I recently read about a new Google product called "Me on the Web:" http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/Google_launches_me_on_the_web_to_help_you_manage_online_identity.php. I think one of the most interesting functions, especially in the context of your comment, Suzanne, that actions may not be as easily controlled as we'd like, is you can remove unwanted content from Google search results that relate to you. I am not sure how I feel about that as I feel like you should "own" and be responsible for content you initially put up. Still, being able to remove some search results raises questions not just about individual identity management, but organizational management as well.

Found this wiki - the point of it is to "build a 'best of the web' reading / watching list for school leadership regarding using social media for school advancement. Rather than talk about how great social media is we're using social media to build this reading list." It's got a TON of information in a useful format. Check it out.

Just came across these fairly recent article on Danna boyd. (yes, that's lower case 'b.') She's been involved with some pretty interesting online studies that focus on teen and young adults. Some of her research has included topics such as, "Online White Flight," "Digital Self-Harm," and Privacy Techniques." I found it particularly interesting that on the topic of Digital Self-Harm, she discovered that vicious anonymous questions on a teen's profile weren't examples of cyberbullying but were posted by the teen herself!
  •
Thanks for bringing her into the conversation, Mary Beth! danah boyd is definitely one of my favorite researchers. I read large portions of her dissertation as part of HIB my first semester in the program here at Rutgers, and a lot of what she's said has stuck with me since. You can read it here: http://www.danah.org/papers/TakenOutOfContext.pdf. I also recently attended a webinar from the Berkman Center, where she's a fellow, in which she summarizes nicely a lot of her work under the broader theme of "Embracing the Culture of Connectivity." You can watch it here: http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/events/2011/05/academicSM.

It's Okay If You Confuse Comedy Central's Logo For A Copyright Symbol - 1 views

  •
My boyfriend works for Comedy Central and he helped with rebranding. I was very interested in how they came up with a logo that looked just like the copyright logo. It wasn't a coincidence. Comedy Central held a small press conference to herald its new clean, minimal logo: a small "c" enveloped in another larger, backwards "c" with the word "central," inverted. If it looks kind of like an "@" symbol, that's on purpose, says the network, which just released new iPad apps for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and "America's most horrific web videos" series Tosh.0.

A Life in Libraries, Thanks to Gutenberg - 0 views

A friend of mine fowarded me this article. What is interesting is what Dr. Bidwell says about the impact of digitization and ereaders. The impact of digitization: That's a vexing question and has all sorts of implications for our profession. Digitizing early books is a major achievement. Some people wonder whether we're digitizing ourselves out of a job. I don't think so. It is marvelous to have digital versions of an early book on the Web, but there's nothing like the multiple examination of early books to see how it was produced and received. What about e-readers? You're talking to a curator of printed books. I have nothing against readers. I like to read the printed book.

Jaron Lanier -- You Are Not a Gadget - 0 views

  •
I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned Jaron Lanier or this book, but a friend just recommended it and I was looking up to see what his views are like. It seems that the book, among other things, talks about having to have a self before we begin to share it. Are we disregarding the complexities of life with social media? Are we demonstrating to people that we're living rather than finding personal meaning in life? But I really need to look into it a bit more and I'm not quite sure what I think yet. He's a preeeetty interesting character, that's for sure, with a different take on things. Anyone read this? What do you think?
