Current Status of Salivary Hormone Analysis - 0 views

  •
salivary testing of hormones has proven to be reliable from initial reviews, 1982, to  current studies.  As this study points out, salivary testing has even been shown to be superior to other body fluids.  So, why the lack of use by the clinician?  not due to the research!

Validation of salivary testosterone as a screening test for male hypogonadism - 0 views

  •
This study reviewed two studies and both validated salivary testosterone as a method of testing. The statistical significance was very high. Additionally, they found a 47% decline in testosterone over the study lifespan of a man. So, again, what is the opposition to saliva testing? The only thing I can think of is resistance to change and/or lack of education. As a scientist, neither is acceptable.

Salivary Hormone Measurement Using LC/MS/MS: Specific and Patient- Friendly Tool for As... - 0 views

  •
Great review on the literature of LC-MS/MS and now the new ESI-MS/MS method in saliva hormone testing. This technique is highly sensitive and specific. This article goes through the literature support for each hormone. It also discusses how/why saliva testing is valid. Conclusion: "the author believes that the saliva-based hormone test will be integrated into clinical practice in the near future".

  • Measuring midnight salivary cortisol is an easy and noninvasive means of diagnosing hypercortisolism. Its diagnostic accuracy is identical to, if not better than, that of previously described gold standards
  •
salivary cortisol testing is "better than, that of previously described gold standards."  This makes salivary cortisol testing the gold standard for assessing cortisol levels

People To Be 'Patient And Courteous' With Pharmacy Teams - 0 views

  •
Amid the ongoing furore over shortages of Lateral Flow Device (LFD) test kits that led pharmacy staff to bear customers' wrath, the National Pharmacy Association (NPA) and Company Chemists Association (CCA) have jointly appealed the public to be "patient and courteous to pharmacy teams". In an open letter, the two organisations have urged patients and customers to be patient, courteous and safe while visiting their local pharmacies. Highlighting the efforts put in by healthcare workers to keep everyone safe through this tough winter, the two organisations said the pressure of Covid-19 and shortage of LFD kits have sometimes led to verbal abuse of pharmacy staff. Mark Lyonette, NPA chief executive said: "The vast majority of pharmacy customers and patients are polite and understanding. The supply situation with Lateral Flow Tests is stretching people's patience, but that's no excuse for abusive behaviour and people need to understand the constraints on pharmacy teams at this time." Alongside their routine job of providing medicines, health advice and a range of NHS services, pharmacies have put in extra effort to protect people during the pandemic.

  •
this study of 40 obese patients found saliva cortisol testing less specific than urinary; but more than Dexamethasone suppression test.  The problem with this is several fold: first, this is done via ELIZA and not Mass Spec and second, 24 hour urine collection is hard to achieve in real life.
