Universal Design E-World provides web based tools to support the "community of practice" in Universal design. This is a great resource to learn all about visitability. The website details the requirements of visitability in the home and how Universal housing design benefits everyone, not just the disabled population. No step entrances and wide hallways make it easier for strollers, moving furniture in and out, etc. There are several PDF reports containing more information on topics relating to visitabiltiy that can be downloaded by the user. These include design approach, increasing home access and Universal design in housing. I think that Universal design is much more feasible and aesthetically pleasing than renovations to make a home more accessible.

Originally, I was looking for an article about aging in place but during my search I came across an article, "How Pinterest Can Teach you About Universal Design". Almost everyone is familiar with Pinterest and this article talks about resourceful Pinterest can be. There is a pinner named Claudine Casabonne who shares a bunch of information on Universal design. She states that the "goal is inclusive design, which doesn't need adaptation". I thought this was pretty interesting. Following her on Pinterest might come in handy if we ever take our careers in this direction.

This article, on the University of Georgia's University Health Center website is geared toward students, however I believe many of the principles listed can carry over in other areas of life, not just academic. The article addresses mindset, nutrition, exercise, spirituality, and other aspects of lifestyle that can affect how we deal with stress.

I thought this was very encouraging. This is why I am proud to be on my way to becoming an OTA. These students came up with some amazing ideas. I'm sure some of our assistive devices this semester will be benefcial for many patients.It is our job to make sure that patients can get as close to their previous life as possible, and these students have done some great things.

I love this website. It should be titled "Restrictions Made Easy." The Occupational Therapy Department at the University of Washington Medical Center has created this website to provide handouts for multiple conditions to include sternal precautions, ADLs following surgery of the abdomen, self-care after breast reconstruction, etc. This website will make it easy to accurately advise and treat our patients.

Many of these improvements will also make your home safer and more comfortable for able-bodied residents and guests alike, as well as potentially increase its value.

This article provides a checklist for making a home accessible. It begins with simple solutions for ensuring safety and also recommends contacting someone that has a Certified Aging in Place Specialization (CAPS) that can help design the home to meet visibility and universal design. I think it will be important for us to be skilled in assessing a clients home to help enable them to age in place.

This article is about a study that is being researched on a new type of skin for severe burns. It has not been approved by the FDA, but it was said that mostly like it will be. This new skin is a water based formula called hydrogel. Severe burns do a lot of damage, but "This treatment promoted the development of new blood vessels and the regeneration of complex layers of skin, including hair follicles and the glands that produce skin oil," said Sharon Gerecht. So if this new study is approved, it is going to be one of the greatest things invented!!!

I loved this! My mom has RA and always asks me to help her put on her makeup. These are some really good tips to know if you ever come across this in treatment. I am going to suggest most of them to my mom!

Thanks, Breanne! I like this topic. If I ever end up in the nursing home, I've wondered about doing my own makeup. I hope I'll be able to, LOL! I have a blush case from Belks that is so hard to open. I often think as I struggle around with it how many little old ladies who also shop at Belks are cursing this dumb case! We need universal design for makeup containers.

I found it cool that sometime we can make things for fellow students, not only patients. This engineering student worked on a device that would allow a student with low arm strength to lift their arm in class. It is designed to help them lift objects or even raise their hand to get the teachers attention.

This video gives a good demonstration of just a few ways to massage a scar. I had never heard of scar care before our hand lab with Carrie, and didn't know that OT had anything to do with it. Not all of us will get to be CHT, but we will all have patients with scars. Good information to tuck away for later.

So I thought this would be beneficial for everyone because we were just discussing "burns" in lecture. This massaging technique would be good for a patient who has a localized burned, but could be used for a patient who has a massive portioned burned. I like how she explains what she is doing, and how it helps the healing process. This technique could be used for any type of scar tissue, so it is very universal in therapy.

Great ideas on this video, Tiffany! I am very much in favor or either making nursing homes much less institutional or helping people stay in their homes longer. I feel as if there are a lot of advances and changing attitudes on this topic. Some of the universal designs that are shown, I would like to have them now! Never mind on waiting to get them when I'm old. Least path of resistance, I say. LOL

This article from the today shows website talks about the CP foundations campaign of "just say hi". It addresses the fact that people with disability do not require any other treatment than people who do not. The first step .. just say hi, I feel like this is such a huge topic and I am very interested in backing this campaign. I hope you all find it as interesting as me!

That is a really great campaign! I think most people have issues with greeting people with disabilities and initiating small talk. In one of my linguistics classes, there was a blind student. None of the other students really talked to him, either because they did not know how to or simply because they did not care (unfortunately). I later read an article about blind students at my university, in which he was interviewed. He said that other students were reserved and were not really ready to interact with blind students. That is really sad. Therefore, campaigns like "just say hi' are very important!
