This video runs through some exercise that would be good for a person who had surgery for breast cancer. We have been discussing cancer in class and I felt that this would be beneficial for us to know because breast cancer is not that rare!

What is Hospice - 0 views

shared by amanda03 on 27 Nov 15 - No Cached
  •
So we have learned that hospice is for people who have limited time left, and this video describes hospice a little bit more than what was mentioned in class. The one thing that stuck out to me was the part that life in hospice is not about quantity, but instead it is about quality!

The OT in the video allows the viewer to understand how it would be if they were in an oncology ward. I liked this video because I tend to only have sad thoughts on this particular subject, however, I like how positive the OT is in this video because that is the type of mind set an OTA would need if they were working with a client under these circumstances. Also, the video goes over what an OTA would be focusing on for treatment.

Anti-Gravity Treadmill - 0 views

This treadmill was originally made by NASA to help prepare astronauts for space. I was looking up videos on modalities and this popped up! Even though the talker in the video is a PT I thought it would benefit us to know what technology is out there. This video describes what the treadmill is for and how it works. My husband actually had this done when he had a thousand pound beam fall on his foot and it definitely helped him go back to his typical gait.

How to Massage a Scar - 0 views

  •
So I thought this would be beneficial for everyone because we were just discussing "burns" in lecture. This massaging technique would be good for a patient who has a localized burned, but could be used for a patient who has a massive portioned burned. I like how she explains what she is doing, and how it helps the healing process. This technique could be used for any type of scar tissue, so it is very universal in therapy.

I love Levi Harrison! He explained what anatomical structure causes the phalanges to have trigger finger. Then, he shows one exercise that he would recommend for the patient along with a message treatment to loosen up the spastic pulley. Harrison explains other forms of treatment for trigger finger that OT could recommend.

This video show five nerve gliding exercises that would help reduce, or prevent injury to the ulnar nerve. It starts off with explicit detail of what cubital tunnel syndrome is and provides a few examples of how one could develop cubital tunnel. The movie gives you step by step direction for the nerve gliding techniques, so it is easy to write these tips down while watching the video!

Edema control for the hands were discussed in lab, but I was not quit sure if there was anything else that could help. So this video discusses about messaging techniques for the hand and forearm that can help reduce edema. Also, she talks about specific wraps for different sections of the arm. This video is not long, but this video helped me see how an OTA would educated a patient on this process for self independence.

New Bionics Let Us Run, Climb and Dance | Hugh Herr | TED Talks - 0 views

  •
The world of prosthesis is constantly growing in technology and this video shows just how far technology has come. The bionics are controlled by neural commands rather than nerve impulses, which allows for a more accurate ambulation. In this video Hugh Herr describes how the bionics are made and what the measuring process is for the patient. I think this will help reinforce what we learned this past Friday about amputated limbs. Also, there is a lot of information as to whom these bionics would be good for and how one may get one.

AmputeeOT-Safe Showers - 0 views

I love this lady! She is an OTA who has a lower extremity amputation and allows the viewer to see the real life struggles in a first person point of view. She gives good advice for safe showering/bathing and points out different ways for different people. Lastly, this video will help home health OTA's to know what an amputee may need to make life easier (stand up shower vs. bathtub).

Car Transfer Precautions for THR - 0 views

shared by amanda03 on 01 Oct 15 - No Cached
  •
I thought this video was great for what has been being discussed in class between THP and safe transferring in/out of a vehicle. There are a few things mentioned in the video that I would have not considered for a THP, so I felt that others' may benefit from this as well. This video provides an example of how to educate a patient on the different precautions. I felt like this was important because OTA's are holistic and being able to transport safely from place to place is a very important factor.

Joint Pretection for ADL's - 0 views

This short video shows simple, but effective ways to successfully protect one's hand joints. The ideas shown in this video could be helpful for anyone, however, while watching this video I specifically thought of people who have JRA/RA. These compensatory strategies could allow a person to have their independence longer. Furthermore, I always love to be educated on easier ways of doing activities and in the video it shows ideas for using a shelf liner. I believe this video is fantastic for supporting safe ways of doing one's ADL/IADL's.

Compensatory Strategies for Low Vision - 0 views

shared by amanda03 on 23 Sep 15 - No Cached
  •
This video is very informative on compensatory strategies for people with low vision. The speaker discusses how little changes to an object make a huge difference for the person. The strategies do not involve a lot of money, but rather give you ideas how to use the resources around you. Occupational therapy could use these strategies for about any age group that may have low vision, or difficulties focusing on objects. The thing I like most is that these ideas would be helpful for people who may not have insurance, or a lot of income in general.

This video is short and sweet to the point! It is hard to recognize on one's self if they are using the correct body mechanics when lifting heavy objects, but this video shows what your body should look like. This information is great for at work, or for at home with IADLs/ADLs.
