See the world's first mind-controlled prosthetic leg in action | The Verge - 3 views

  •
This was a very interesting article I read regarding a mind controlled bionic leg. The article is from 2013. It stated that there has been mind controlled bionic arms available for a while now. To date, only one man is testing the mind controlled bionic leg. He says he can walk, go up steps, etc just by thinking about the action taken. There is a very short video of him walking with it. Pretty amazing!

New Bionics Let Us Run, Climb and Dance | Hugh Herr | TED Talks - 0 views

The world of prosthesis is constantly growing in technology and this video shows just how far technology has come. The bionics are controlled by neural commands rather than nerve impulses, which allows for a more accurate ambulation. In this video Hugh Herr describes how the bionics are made and what the measuring process is for the patient. I think this will help reinforce what we learned this past Friday about amputated limbs. Also, there is a lot of information as to whom these bionics would be good for and how one may get one.

Bionic arm restores sense of feeling - 2 views

  •
Advances in bionic hands have restored a sense of touch to two patients for more than a year, report US scientists. The men can now delicately pluck the stalks out of cherries. Sensors on the artificial hand are used to send signals directly to the nerves, the study, published in Science Translational Medicine, said.

Electric arm for young and bionic arm for female pop artist/model - 1 views

I found a neat video on a little boy that has an electric arm that helps him do tasks with cutting to blowing bubbles. Also, a video of a young pop singer that I am sure several of us have heard her songs at some time or another. Now she is a model that models prosthetic arms. She has recently been fitted with a new bionic arm that is very futuristic in my opinion.

The Future of Prosthetics Could Be This Brain-Controlled Bionic Leg - 0 views

About a year ago, Zac Vawter climbed all 103 flights of stairs of the Willis Tower in Chicago. On its own, this accomplishment would be pretty unremarkable, but Vawter, who lost his leg four years ago during a motorcycle accident, happened climb more than 2,000 steps while wearing a prosthetic leg.. This is so awesome! I love searching to see where the future of prosthetics is going.

Targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) - 3 views

  •
I found some very interesting information about upper extremity amputation. The article tells about the procedure and the role of the occupational therapist in the recovery process. With this procedure, an electrical prosthesis is controlled by the mind via nerve innervation. The nerves from the amputated arm are transferred to the pectoral muscles where they regenerate, which in turn allows movement of the prosthetic arm. I included this link from another website as well because there are videos available to watch. http://www.ric.org/conditions/prosthetics-orthotics/bionic/

The Bionic Man on the Today Show - 1 views

Wow! This is amazing and kinda scary at the same time. It gives a lot to consider about the future and progress that is being made, but at the same time makes me wonder how far is too far with what parts we replace and what keeps us alive. I have no doubt that one day they will have developed a replacement for every organ and part of the human body. While that is exciting and gives a lot of hope to many, the thought that a non-human can be created to be human freaks me out. See what you think of this video, it is pretty cool.

TED talk on Targeted Muscle Reinnervation - 3 views

  •
Awesome TEDtalk by Todd Kuiken about Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (the future of UE prothesis). This is a much watch video about the future of UE prosthesis. Targeted Muscle Reinnervation is an intuitive way to use hand and elbow prothesis with your thoughts. This is a better way to control your arm and grasp patterns. And hopefully in the future this technology will allow its users to 'feel' sensations in their prosthetic hand. Amanda, the patient talks about how the most important thing to her in working with children was the ability to clap again. Great video! Very informative.
