Video Mail in a Blink! It's fun, it's easy and there's nothing to install Flash-based so no download and for Mac and PC. Free account allows for one-minute messages. Message receivers don't have to sign up to watch the message it seems. That's good. Teachers can send message to students and encourage them to continue and reply. This is especially nice for online learners and teachers. Students can send each other messages to practise speaking and listening. Speaking for a minute is probably not that scary :)

Free German podcasts complete with transcripts and teaching materials (small fee for the latter though). If you double click on a word on the screen it will transalte it into English for you. A wide variety of topics.

Haven't had a chance to try this yet but apparently it gets around the issues of flash on the ipad and ipod. Curious if it will work for the language sites we often use that use flash.

A superb app for any one looking at learning basic Mandarin Chinese. Play the game to listen and see the language. There are many different types of questions, but most are multiple choice or click and drag from a selection of choices. Questions start out easy and there is support and 'hint' buttons to help you. You can download each lesson as you reach it, or download everything if you plan to use it offline. All the language you have met is stored in a word bank and use your microphone to compare your pronunciation to the recordings.

Dear Maggie. Thanks a lot for this invaluable link. It is going to take a long while dealing with all these documentaries but they all seem to be worth watching.

Learning with the world, not just about it .

researchers long thought the window for learning a new language shrinks rapidly after age 7 and closes almost entirely after puberty. Yet interdisciplinary research conducted over the past five years at the University of Washington, Pennsylvania State University, and other colleges suggest that the time frame may be more flexible than first thought and that students who learn additional languages become more adaptable in other types of learning, too.

Spain's Prado Museum has teamed up with Google Earth for a project that allows people to view the gallery's main works of art from their computers--and even zoom in on details not immediately discernible to the human eye.

Even though this is for learning to write better, I think the focus on word choice would make it an excellent educational game for learning English.
