4 tech tips for eLearning Managers - 0 views

  •
A useful article providing some tips on using technology to assist eLearning project management.
  •
I found this to be an interesting article because it's from Kineo. In my first semester in this ILT program, my first group and I presented on Kineo eXe, an eLearning authoring tool. The article talks about the use of MS Project, a timesheet system, a bug database, and a collaborative tool. All of these are needed to manage an eLearning project. There are tools that offer more than one of these options, such as SharePoint as a collaboration tool and bug database, but with a cost. The article lists other options as well and I'd like to investigate the tools listed there more to see if there are free options.

  •
This article is relatively old (2002). Nonetheless, it contains timeless tips to ensure eLearning success, particularly with regard to managing stakeholder expectations. -Duncan McBogg Abstract: Leading a major e-learning or blended learning initiative is a relatively new, complex and high-stakes challenge. Success depends on a variety of factors, not the least of which is the project leader's ability to manage threats in the form of miscommunication among key constituents, excessive rework, missed milestones, cost overruns, poor quality deliverables, etc. To help ensure the success of your organization's learning initiatives, consider how you might apply these proven tips:

    Great article and tips!
  •
I really enjoyed this read! Great information on communicating with SMEs and how to keep moving.
  •
The "Help them take a step back" bullet is an excellent point. A lot of times, SMEs try to put EVERYTHING about a topic in a training and if you tell them everything, they remember nothing. I use Action Mapping to keep SME's (and me) focused on what content should be taught. Great article!
  •
I like #2. So many times SMEs loose sight of the project objective. :-)
  •
Jenna, these guidelines are simple but powerful. What of the greatest challenges I had on a recent project was to get the SME to back off and take care of the content, not the learning materials. I never really succeeded but it might have helped if I had the #4 guideline instilled in our heads early in the project.

I think people in all career areas could learn something from these general stress busters...it's just a matter of seeing through to help yourself when you're in the midst of crisis!
  •
Good article on what can cause stress, the biological and mental aspect of stress and some quick tips you can use anywhere. So many of us rely on caffeine drinks to keep up going it is scary what the long term effects can be. A good smoothie can probably do better and is better for you. Dabbled around the site a bit and found out these guys are from Canada, my home country!
  •
Right. Stress. I think this is one I should post hard-copy to the wall, ha. I might consider cutting back on caffeine and taking a deep breath more often. Thanks for a smart addition to the PM list :)
  •
Jaime- I am on day 2 of no caffeine and I already feel SO much calmer. I'm craving it really badly, but I was so jittery lately and I know it was stressing me out more. A good reminder on keeping stress under control. Thanks Allan!

I like the recommendations for stress reduction. A few people at my work actually requested that the company create a quiet relaxation room. Not sure if they'll do it, but I hope so. I got into breathing meditation years ago and it pretty much cured me of anxiety attacks that had persisted from my late 20's to early 30's. A couple years of daily practice and they haven't returned for almost 10 years. I don't keep up with the meditation anymore, but I'd say any amount of practice can affect long-term benefits.

This is great information for someone unfamiliar with project management. The key characteristics go beyond common sense ideals. I especially appreciate the suggestion to "cultivate and rely on extensive informal networks inside and outside the firm to solve problems that arise" - that is a great proactive problem solving strategy. Thanks for sharing this info :)
  •
This is a great list! I like how it lists not using information as a weapon. It's amazing to see managers ignore this rule. It comes with the territory of holding back one's emotions or personal preference. Letting go is a quality that is hard to find in management.

"Project Management Insight" Blog - 0 views

  •
I was researching information on writing an effective business case when I came across this blog. It's written by a practicing PM, which makes it interesting to me because I'm not officially a PM. The author's posts cover a variety of topics that are informative and interesting, and she gives a lot of helpful tips about project management. I especially like how she tags her articles and gives them simple titles, which makes it easy to skim over the pages and find something that piques your interest. Also, the articles are a good length for quick information-gathering.

8 Tips for Managing eLearning Projects Successfully | Custom Training and eLearning Blog - 4 views

Nice general ID blog with a good number of articles about project managment in realtion to eLearning. This article in particular had some nice tips.
  •
I like the idea of educating SME's about the process so they understand why making last minute changes makes it difficult for us.
  •
Simple and concise, this article offers some sound advice on managing eLearning projects.  I love the analogy presented in the opening introduction that project management is like herding a bunch of wild cats in one direction.  It really is true that the project manager is in a position that requires them to deal with people of all different personalities and moods.

The Project Management Tip You Can't Ignore - The Rapid eLearning Blog - 2 views

Interesting article and funny video. Leaves me still agreeing that a good PM app would eliminate 90% of these emails.

Managing elearning projects requires good communication between the instructional designers and subject matter experts. In most cases, this communication happens via email. Thus, better email communication ultimately leads to better project management, which most likely means better elearning courses. At a recent ASTD conference, I ran into Mike Song, the author of The Hamster Revolution.

21 Ways to excel at project management - 1 views

  •
This article breaks down the stages of a project. It is an easy read.
  •
Interesting article, I learned something new in the section releasing the benefits. Specifically, "to gain benefits, you must have change." I know some can be afraid of change but then how does a company grow. Change needs to occur to have everything stay current and up-to date. thanks
  •
This was a great article since it appealed to all skill levels. Whether new to project management or a "seasoned" professional these tips could apply to all. I also like how it was broken down into 21 ways so you could pick one topic and work on that and then move on to the next if need be. A great way to gradually build better PM skills.

Step-by-Step Beginners Guide to Project Management - 4 views

  •
I liked this article with it's straightforward language and steps that make sense. Not only are the concrete requirements such as budget and tools discussed, but the often overlooked teamwork and leader roles are covered. Also on this site are related articles from "An Introduction to Project Management", "The Role of the Project Manager" and many others.
  •
that was a great article. I link the simplification of project management ins beining defined through the who, what, when, where and how. Also they discuss getting participants to commit, that is important or they will not do their part in the project. thanks for sharing.
  •
I like the reminder of several basic but easily forgotten tips. Writing down the objective is key for me. I can become a little too creative at times and end up distracted from the main goal. I like to keep it in sight throughout the entire process. Thanks for a great article!
