Fierce Conversations - 1 views

I am reading the book written by the founder of this group. It is an enjoyable read and this company also runs a helpful blog. I think it is great for people and organizations that feel challenged by having those difficult conversations.

Looks interesting. Seems like a good communication resource.

8 Tips for Managing eLearning Projects Successfully | Custom Training and eLearning Blog - 4 views

  •
Nice general ID blog with a good number of articles about project managment in realtion to eLearning. This article in particular had some nice tips.
  •
I like the idea of educating SME's about the process so they understand why making last minute changes makes it difficult for us.
  •
Simple and concise, this article offers some sound advice on managing eLearning projects.  I love the analogy presented in the opening introduction that project management is like herding a bunch of wild cats in one direction.  It really is true that the project manager is in a position that requires them to deal with people of all different personalities and moods.

Make Your Emotions Work for You in Negotiations - 2 views

  •
#2 is important to recognize. When one can identify emotional triggers then it is easier to learn to work with others who may accidentally set off those emotions without meaning too. Human beings unconsciously reflection and interpret others emotions so it is important to understand your own.
  •
#1 Mindfulness meditation has been practiced by the buddhist monks for centuries. Brain imaging studies show that an eight week course of this meditation can affect the brain by reducing flight/fight and increasing concentration http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/guest-blog/2014/06/12/what-does-mindfulness-meditation-do-to-your-brain/
  •
Can't agree more with the idea that we need to reflect on and recognize our emotions. We spend far too much time doing it to others, but often forget to look inside.

The Accidental Project Manager - 2 views

  •
One reason PMs fail is their desire to get the product right the first time. This site says that this is an unrealistic expectation and that we should expect to get it wrong the first time and communicate this to our team. The dynamics will change making them more open and less pressured to "make the wrong step". This approach is modeled by Microsoft which generally takes about 3 times before they get a product right. Other useful tips and lessons follow such as Less is More. An uplifting site that reminds us that it is okay to make mistakes as long as we learn from them.
  •
Very insightful article. The point the article made that I felt was interesting was the part about how it can be hard early on to not test what they are making. Easy to go down the wrong direction.

Project Management Models - 2 views

  •
Here is a link to a waterfall PM model. Although maybe over simplistic, I like the fact that is suggests a phase can't start until a the previous is completed. You also find the spiral model that suggests that we go through specific phases again and again-at first take, I find this spiral model a bit worrisome. It lacks defined milestones and benchmarks, and perhaps it implies a ambiguity when it comes to roles.

The risk log - 3 views

  •
An essential tool in any project management methodology is the risk log or risk register. This provides a means of recording the identified risks, the analysis of their severity and the necessary management actions to be taken.
  •
    helpful template for risk assessment
  •
The two things I liked about this site most were the concepts of an RAG status and assigning an early warning sign. I like the RAG status because it gives the risk log a quick visual aspect. You can see right away the amount of risk involved in your project. I like the thought of assigning an early warning sign because it really makes you think out each risk involved in your project. When an early warning sign does occur, you will be aware of the risk much sooner than if you had not thought it through.

There is a lot of information on this site! They could use a little help with their web design to make it a little less overwhelming though...
  •
I love this approach to communication! I've used in all aspects of my work and personal communications and when I really implement it has really helped me navigate some high conflict situations. It does take practice and is easier to work with if you have others you can engage with to practice the techniques.

This is a web application tool for resourcing a project and better understanding company-wide resource allocation. From a user testimonial: "The only downside is that it is Flash based and it has been known to crash within certain browsers and especially on a Mac. In saying that, the company that developed this is constantly pushing out bug fixes and new feature sets." o Report Feature.

Managing Multicultural Teams - 1 views

  •
Very informative article from the Harvard Business Review. Using many real life examples, this article reviews the problems and solutions to managing a multicultural team. Problems can be overt such as language and accents to something subtle such as how to deal with conflict. Four categories were identified by the researchers that could create barriers to effective teamwork. These categories are direct versus indirect communication; trouble with accents and fluency; differing attitudes toward hierarchy and authority and conflicting norms for decision making.
  •
I think that one thing that was interesting is that it stresses being careful in how you establish groups and subgroups otherwise you may see a strengthening of differences. It is something that I see in the classroom all of the time. Kids break up based on common culture, language, or backgrounds.

This is a great site for affordable online training, especially for PMP certification preparation. You can select training from among many reputable online training devopment companies. The PMP course I checked out was by PrimeLearning. Although I couldn't tell which version of the PMBOK the course was written for, it looked like all of the main concepts were included in the course.
  •
Very affordable for PMP prep classes! I took one several years ago and it was a few thousand dollars.

Elearning Project Managment video - 2 views

A quick video about one successful e-learning project management approach. She includes a section for story-boarding in her process, which I think is a really cool creative step between instructional design and production.
  •
This was a great video you found Brook. I enjoyed the quality of the production, but I also think it did a great job of summarizing the total process. It actually cleared up a couple misconception I had with the process. Thanks for the post.
  •
Nice find Brook! Nice summary and good points to think about. Thanks for the post.

10 best free PM apps - 1 views

A blog outlining the top 10 free online project management software, because we can't all buy MS Project. This blog provides a brief overview of each software as well as links to the full site.

I'ts great to have all of these in one place. It allows you to compare them together. Two I have looked at for use in Education are ZOHO and Huddle.
  •
Great add Brook! I came across this article when I was searching for a PM tool for our office. I've tried Basecamp before and I like how intuitive it is. Have you tried any of the other ones?

Blog posting that has good conversation about why PMs are important to eLearning.

This article is written in a humorous way and does describe the basic necessity of a project manager in eLearning projects. While it doesn't cover all aspects, it is well written and is open ended.

Jennifer, I posted a tool very similar. I really love mind mapping and think it has huge benefits in the area of project management. It is nice when multiple people can work on the same visual. These maps help you to organized your ideas and see potential problems. Both huge things in Project Management.
