Audio Recording an IEP | Special Education & IEP Advisor - 1 views

  • IDEA does not automatically give parents the right to audio record an IEP but audio recordings must be allowed “if they are necessary to ensure that the parent understands the IEP or the IEP process or to implement other parental rights guaranteed under Part B.”  I thought that was important to reiterate again that even if the SEA or School District has a policy against audio recordings there must be exceptions allowed in certain instances.

    What:
LiveScribe Smartpens allow students to record audio that synchronizes with the notes that they write on special dot paper. Depending on the Smartpen, content is transferred to a computer via USB cable or WiFi. Evernote is a free app/software that allows students to store notes and audio recorded with a smartpen alongside emails, documents, web pages, photos, videos and more. This allows students to quickly search and share lectures, meetings and ideas any time on nearly any device. Interactive versions of "pencasts" play back within Livescribe Desktop software or Adobe Reader. These tools allow greater independence for students with learning disabilities in both high school and higher education.

YouTube Blog: The Future Will Be Captioned: Improving Accessibility on YouTube - 0 views

  • Today, we are opening up auto-captions to all YouTube users. There will even be a "request processing" button for un-captioned videos that any video owner can click on if they want to speed up the availability of auto-captions. It will take some time to process all the available video, so here are some things to keep in mind: While we plan to broaden the feature to include more languages in the months to come, currently, auto-captioning is only for videos where English is spoken. Just like any speech recognition application, auto-captions require a clearly spoken audio track. Videos with background noise or a muffled voice can't be auto-captioned. President Obama's speech on the recent Chilean Earthquake is a good example of the kind of audio that works for auto-captions. Auto-captions aren't perfect and just like any other transcription, the owner of the video needs to check to make sure they're accurate. In other cases, the audio file may not be good enough to generate auto-captions. But please be patient -- our speech recognition technology gets better every day. Auto-captions should be available to everyone who's interested in using them. We're also working to provide auto-captions for all past user uploads that fit the above mentioned requirements. If you're having trouble enabling them for your video, please visit our Help Center: this article is for uploaders and this article is for viewers.

FCTD | June 2012 - Setting Tradition on Its Ear: Audio-Based Environments and Gaming Enhance Navigation Skills for the Blind - 0 views

  • For years orientation and mobility (O&M) researchers have studied the ways in which individuals with blindness and low vision get around, or navigate. Traditionally, says Dr. Lotfi Merabet, the assumption has been that blind people, especially early-blind children, have cognitive difficulties in representing spatial environments. These cognitive difficulties were presumed to result in impaired navigation skills. However, he notes, new research – involving the use of consumer-oriented audio technology, including gaming – is setting tradition on its ear.

BlindSide: A Game for Players Who Can't See : The New Yorker - 0 views

  • Earlier this year, a minor injury to my right eye left me temporarily blind. I could do little but sit in bed and listen to audio books, until someone told me about the video game BlindSide, which doesn’t, in fact, contain any video. It is a meticulously designed, audio-driven thriller that is entirely devoid of graphics.
