What:
This month's Grandparents (or relative) Raising Grandchildren Support Group meeting features a guest speaker from the Yellowstone Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA). CASA is a group of community volunteers who speak up for abused and neglected children in Yellowstone County. The CASA concept is based on the commitment that every child deserves a safe, permanent home. CASA volunteers are appointed by the courts to gather accurate and complete information about a child's circumstances, serve as an advocate, and make objective recommendations in the best interest of the child. This is the last spring meeting for 2013, there will be a picnic potluck, and grandchildren are welcome. If you are able to bring dish contact the Extension office to confirm.

Twenty years ago, telling a parent that their child suffered from Attention Deficit Disorder or Bipolar Disorder most often resulted in grief, denial, or even outrage. Today, studies show that parents diagnose their own children with mental disorders at a much higher rate than psychiatric experts. Schools are often caught between shrinking resources and increasing demands, as more children are identified as mentally disabled. Over two days, this workshop will help clear away some of the confusion and controversy surrounding mental health issues that most often affect school-age children. You will learn in practical terms, how a child with ADHD thinks, what motivates an oppositional child, which kids might actually have Bipolar Disorder, and which are simply moody. You will learn how psychiatric medications work to help, and sometimes to hurt. You will learn about the warning signs for violence in children and adolescents. Lastly, you will have a chance to ask advice about specific mental health issues in your school. In short, this workshop is designed to help you understand, teach, and advocate for your students with mental illness.

Parents and their children meet separately for the first 90 minutes and meet together for the last 30 minutes. Light dinner included for children and adults. Designed for parents of children birth to 12 years. Two facilitators run parents' group; two facilitators run the children's group. The children's group is designed to meet the needs of all children regardless of abilities or health concerns. Speakers use several different communication techniques to help their listeners follow the logic of the discourse (conversation, teaching, etc.), as well as to hone in on key points of the discussion. Like all languages, American Sign Language speakers (and interpreters) use strategies to assist with listener comprehension. In the literature these are frequently referred to as 'expansion features' (Lawrence, Finton, Smith, etc.). Educational Interpreters encounter dilemmas in the K-12 setting that must be handled in a manner appropriate to this unique work environment.  Interpreters working with students in the educational setting face unique challenges and must keep in mind that they are working with developing children and youth. Are you unsure of your role and responsibilities in the K-12 setting? What is your role as a member of the Educational Team? What information is confidential and what can you share with others? Improve vocabulary instruction in your school/district.  This seminar is designed to help educators develop a plan for providing explicit, systematic vocabulary instruction to improve student academic performance in the classroom and on state assessments.  Key academic vocabulary correlated to common core standards in reading, language arts, math, and science are provided along with a five day instructional plan that can be implemented in a single classroom or entire school/district.  Targeted words are embedded into existing lessons and taught in context.  An explicit, engaged instructional approach is used to introduce words followed by the use of center activities for meaningful use/practice of words to ensure long term retention.  Mastery and progress monitoring assessments are provided to monitor student learning and inform instruction. Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities as well as mental illness have characteristics that result in puzzling and easily misunderstood behaviors that pose myriad difficulties for the criminal justice system. Join us for a 6-hour Workshop designed to provide the participant with skills to interact with individuals with intellectual disabilities. Participants will learn effective techniques to identify and interact with individuals with intellectual limitations to achieve desired outcomes and acquire skills for questioning and de-escalating agitated individuals with intellectual disabilities. Upon completion of this training, you will: Utilize techniques to assist in identifying individuals with intellectual disabilities; Understand the major characteristics of people with intellectual disabilities and how those characteristics result in challenges to personnel throughout the criminal justice system; Learn skills to effectively interact with and/or detain individuals with intellectual disabilities; Recognize typical responses of individuals with intellectual disabilities and how such responses can be easily misinterpreted; Learn effective methods of interacting with people with intellectual disabilities who are victims of crime; Understand unique characteristics of autism and effective techniques for interacting with individuals on the autism spectrum. There are a variety of useful apps to make the classroom livelier and more engaging for both the students and teacher. Alaina Buffalo Spirit began her journey as a self-taught artist in 2004. It was through the tragic loss of her only son that Alaina found solace in art. She was chosen as the 2010 Featured Artist of the Great Falls Indian Art Show in Great Falls, as well as a One-Woman Art Show at the Uprising Gallery in Bozeman in 2011. Most recently, Alaina was chosen to represent Montana by designing ornaments for the national Christmas tree in Washington, D.C. She chose the Chief Dull Knife College, representing the Northern Cheyenne nation, to work with the project. Ledger art derives from Plains Indian Biographic art, which recorded actual events important in the lives of individuals and groups, usually as naturalistic action scenes composed primarily of horses, humans, weapons, and tipis. Many stories are handed down through storytelling, as told by elders in Alaina's family. Many of the stories her grandparents shared have never been recorded nor written. Oral history is the natural process of teaching the young about the culture and traditions of the Cheyenne. Where:
