Feds To Move Away From DSM - Disability Scoop - 0 views

  • Just weeks before a new version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders is scheduled for release, the head of the National Institute of Mental Health says it’s time to change how mental conditions are categorized. The agency will be redirecting its research focus away from the symptom-based diagnostic criteria of the DSM toward more scientifically verifiable standards, the mental health agency’s director, Thomas Insel, wrote in a recent blog post. By shifting away from thinking about mental disorders as they are currently classified in the DSM, Insel says researchers will be able to establish a new diagnostic system based on emerging science. “Unlike our definitions of ischemic heart disease, lymphoma or AIDS, the DSM diagnoses are based on a consensus about clusters of clinical symptoms, not any objective laboratory measure,” Insel wrote. “Patients with mental disorders deserve better.”

    Hear Temple Grandin, PhD, speak on autism. Dr. Grandin will be hosted by MSU's Department of Animal & Range Sciences, and her autism talk is co-sponsored by the Montana INBRE and COBRE Programs. Dr. Grandin obtained her B.A. at Frankin Pierce College and her M.S. in Animal Science at Arizona State University. Dr. Grandin received her Ph.D in Animal Science from the University of Illinois in 1989. Today she teaches courses on livestock behaviour and facility design at Colorado State University and consults with the livestock industry on facility design, livestock handling, and animal welfare. She has appeared on television shows such as 20/20, 48 Hours, CNN Larry King Live, PrimeTime Live, 60 Minutes, the Today Show, and many shows in other countries. She has been featured in People Magazine, the New York Times, Forbes, U.S. News and World Report, Time Magazine, the New York Times book review, and Discover magazine. In 2010, Time Magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people. When:

    Course Description: School teams, comprised of teachers, administrators, counselors, specialists, academic coaches or anyone working with programming options for gifted students, will be presented with the OPI Framework for Gifted Education Programs and a Gifted Program Planning Template. This is a working session, at the end of which, the teams will have a firm grasp of the state framework and will use the template to construct a gifted program that fits their district and population. Time will be provided to work on individual program plans.
