  • What: Do you need to know more about how to promote successful outcomes for your students in the area of math skills? Come to the MASP Summer Institute to discover how to apply recent research findings in your classroom. Learn the essentials of math preparation that we now know underlie proficiency in mathematics, including the importance of effective instruction. Find out the implications for identifying mathematics disabilities and for planning intervention. This is an important conference because there is a great deal of new evidence about how to foster the acquisition of good math skills, information that is not widely known yet. This will be one of the first opportunities that most people in our audience will have to learn about current knowledge on how children learn mathematics and how that learning can go wrong.

  • This academy gives the paraeducator knowledge and skills specific to the use of instructional strategies and methods. The academy bases teaching upon the belief that paraeducators must be constantly involved in the dynamic process of analyzing the teaching environment and individual student needs for the particular level of support, degree of adaptation/accommodation or modification, and instructional method that would best facilitate learning. The academy is designed to provide these skills for use by paraeducators supporting students in inclusive classrooms, resource rooms, or in self-contained settings. Paraeducators that attend this training will learn strategies to use with reading, math, and writing instruction. These strategies can be used in whole group, small group or individual instruction.

As NCLB deadline gets closer, more schools look at shrugging off compliance - 0 views

  • Billings School District 2 trustees were listening to a report on No Child Left Behind compliance, hearing about which schools had the requisite percentage of children testing at grade level in math and reading, required by the 2002 federal law. The report was something of a mixed bag. In some cases, white students were performing better than their minority counterparts and students from more affluent homes were doing better than those from poorer families. But taken all together, 89 percent of Billings students were reading at or above grade level and 74 percent were doing math at that same level -- a good step above the 83 percent required for reading and the 68 percent required for math. And that's the problem, trustees were told. Starting next year, the requirements jump significantly.

Baltimore-Based Study Finds Core Cause of Math Disability | NBC Washington - 0 views

  • The new, decade long study conducted by the Kennedy Krieger Institute and published Friday in the Child Development journal, finds that having a poor “gut sense” of numbers can lead to dyscalculia. This inaccurate number sense is just one cause of math learning disabilities, according to the study led by Dr. Michele Mazzocco of the Baltimore Institute.

    What:
    MEA-MFT PASS is an intensive four-day course, designed to help Montana paraprofessionals meet Federal qualification standards contained in the No Child Left Behind Act. The course has been developed by and for Montana paraprofessionals and provides participants with important skills in classroom management as well as proven strategies in reading, writing, and math instruction, taught in a dynamic and fun setting. A nationally developed assessment is built directly into the four-day course, assuring that paraprofessionals who take the course can demonstrate evidence of content mastery to their local districts and the state of Montana. Course materials are taken from the nationally recognized and award winning Educational Research and Dissemination (ER&D) program, developed by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). A team of highly trained educators from throughout the state are responsible for teaching the course. Each trainer has received over 70 hours of ER&D training at the national level.

    Spend the day playing games that are easy to implement in a classroom, while tutoring, after school, or in a home situation-most only involve dice and cards. Interventions can be fun and they don't have to be traditional. They do need to be skill specific, however. The day will be spent playing games and connecting these games to Montana Common Core Math Content. Time will be dedicated to gearing up and gearing down skills of a variety of games so that you can use games from your background when you get back to your site. Among the apps being shared are apps for time management, social networking, discussion forums and boards, books, art and graphics, and much more.     Title IX: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." Title IX has been in schools since 1972. It's best known for breaking down barriers in sports for women and girls. It also opens the door for girls to pursue math and science. It requires fair treatment. It protects students from bullying and sexual harassment. And it does much more. This two-day workshop examines what Title IX is and what it encompasses. From sexual harassment to bullying will be among the topics covered . . . Including athletics, academic achievement, discipline, investigation, policies, procedures, and law suits. This is an excellent opportunity for each school and district to receive training on their Title IX requirements.

    Technology and digital citizenship are becoming even more important as state's begin implementing the CCSS. This interactive, hands-on workshop will share resources and demonstrate through model lessons, how to efficiently use resources and technology to support CCSS. Attendees will participate in lessons demonstrating the teaching of digital citizenship, English Language Arts, and Math, all aligned to CCSS and integrating technology throughout. The purpose and the goals of the CCSS will also be re-viewed. Jeff Crews and Dean Phillips of Beyond the Chalk. Beyond the Chalk was co-founded by Jeff and Dean who believe in the power of education and the need to continuously provide transformational learning experiences for our teachers and students.     In this class you will learn how to differentiate inside the four walls of your classroom. We will take a look at the NEW Common Core "blooms", reading, math, and other subject areas. We will look at learning styles and discover how to reach all of them in one day. We will talk about having gifted kids in the general classroom that need to be challenged at their level at all times, and how to control the time we spend with those that need us the most to catch up. Tammie will walk participants through a lesson plan that she uses.
