Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities as well as mental illness have characteristics that result in puzzling and easily misunderstood behaviors that pose myriad difficulties for the criminal justice system. Join us for a 6-hour Workshop designed to provide the participant with skills to interact with individuals with intellectual disabilities. Participants will learn effective techniques to identify and interact with individuals with intellectual limitations to achieve desired outcomes and acquire skills for questioning and de-escalating agitated individuals with intellectual disabilities. Upon completion of this training, you will: Utilize techniques to assist in identifying individuals with intellectual disabilities; Understand the major characteristics of people with intellectual disabilities and how those characteristics result in challenges to personnel throughout the criminal justice system; Learn skills to effectively interact with and/or detain individuals with intellectual disabilities; Recognize typical responses of individuals with intellectual disabilities and how such responses can be easily misinterpreted; Learn effective methods of interacting with people with intellectual disabilities who are victims of crime; Understand unique characteristics of autism and effective techniques for interacting with individuals on the autism spectrum. What: A series of 6 bi-weekly classes structured to help parents and direct caregivers understand and support children and adolescents with serious mental illness while maintaining their own well being. The course is taught by a team of trained NAMI family members and direct caregiver volunteers who know what it's like to have a child struggling with one of these brain disorders. Topics covered will be the 'no fault' approach, the biology of mental illness, getting an accurate diagnosis, an overview of treatment options, the impact on family, communication, crisis management, the systems/agencies involved with your child, the importance of record keeping, and advocating and team building for you and your child. There is no cost to participate in the NAMI Basics Program and you will be given course materials to take home. What:
It is well known among secondary teachers that an increasing number of students are ill equipped to read and comprehend the textbooks designed for proficient secondary readers.  Reading instruction is a responsibility shared by all teachers, regardless of level or content. Educators who accept this idea are already a step ahead - but for secondary teachers who may have never had the opportunity to learn how to teach basic reading strategies, the task is daunting.  This session will examine Before, During, and After reading strategies that can be applied in all content area classrooms and support increased comprehension of the text. When all subject area teachers have students use common strategies, it leads to greater independence, more responsibility in the learning, and increased student outcomes for all students.

This workshop is designed for the general population and those interested in learning basic skills to prevent suicide.
WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES:
1. Increase awareness of ways to address stigma and suicide in our rural Montana culture.
2. Gain insight regarding suicide ideation related to issues of mental illness.
3. Appreciate ways and resources that foster life oriented recovery.
4. Engage in open dialogue which contributes to increased understanding and hopefulness for suicide risk recovery.
5. Describe basic skills to intervene with persons at risk of suicide.
6. Explore how Montana communities can address creating a culture for suicide prevention.
