One Book - One Bozeman is a community-wide read program to promote community building and literacy through reading a common book. The Bozeman Public Library is partnering with MSU Summer Reading/Convocation, Bozeman Schools, and local businesses to bring a successful and comprehensive program into the our community.

Hear Temple Grandin, PhD, speak on autism. Dr. Grandin will be hosted by MSU's Department of Animal & Range Sciences, and her autism talk is co-sponsored by the Montana INBRE and COBRE Programs. Dr. Grandin obtained her B.A. at Frankin Pierce College and her M.S. in Animal Science at Arizona State University. Dr. Grandin received her Ph.D in Animal Science from the University of Illinois in 1989. Today she teaches courses on livestock behaviour and facility design at Colorado State University and consults with the livestock industry on facility design, livestock handling, and animal welfare. She has appeared on television shows such as 20/20, 48 Hours, CNN Larry King Live, PrimeTime Live, 60 Minutes, the Today Show, and many shows in other countries. She has been featured in People Magazine, the New York Times, Forbes, U.S. News and World Report, Time Magazine, the New York Times book review, and Discover magazine. In 2010, Time Magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people. When:

This event is organized through the school PTAs/PACs, so you hopefully have already heard about it through your child's school. In case you hadn't, I wanted to make sure you know about it. Anderson school, on Cottonwood, where our children attend, has participated all 5 years, and it's a great event! These families have been incredibly generous, donating clean, gently-used clothing, shoes, hats, etc. of all sizes, infant through adult. Volunteers are also always needed to help sort, hang, and organize the donations during set up. Any time you have to volunteer, short or long, will be greatly appreciated. If you come on Tuesday or Thursday over the lunch hour, the Tumbleweed Gourmet Food truck will be there selling volunteers their gourmet tacos and burritos. If you are able to help anytime next week for 2 hours, you can take a brown paper grocery sack of treasures for yourself! This free clothing giveaway is a fantastic opportunity to reuse and recycle gently worn clothing collected by Bozeman area schools. This event is not based on "need," but on "sharing" what we have as a community. MEA-MFT PASS is an intensive four-day course, designed to help Montana paraprofessionals meet Federal qualification standards contained in the No Child Left Behind Act. The course has been developed by and for Montana paraprofessionals and provides participants with important skills in classroom management as well as proven strategies in reading, writing, and math instruction, taught in a dynamic and fun setting. A nationally developed assessment is built directly into the four-day course, assuring that paraprofessionals who take the course can demonstrate evidence of content mastery to their local districts and the state of Montana. Course materials are taken from the nationally recognized and award winning Educational Research and Dissemination (ER&D) program, developed by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). A team of highly trained educators from throughout the state are responsible for teaching the course. Each trainer has received over 70 hours of ER&D training at the national level.

Reading instruction is a responsibility shared by all teachers, regardless of level or content. When upper elementary or secondary students fail written assessments, teachers often assume it's because they lack specific content knowledge. But what if it's simply because they cannot read the multisyllabic words? All reading consists of three components: word identification, vocabulary, and comprehension. Word identification is often overlooked and can be the root of students' failure. Hear about new evidence-based data on prefixes, suffixes, and Greek roots occurring most often in content-area words that supports a shared responsibility for strengthening students' literacy skills. Discover quick, formative assessments for upper elementary and secondary teachers that measure students' ability to use knowledge of syllable types, syllable division patterns, and common morphemes (e.g., prefixes, suffixes, Greek roots) to decode multisyllabic words. The CORE Teaching Reading Sourcebook, a comprehensive resource in teaching research based reading instruction, is used during the session as a resource in helping teachers improve instruction in multisyllabic word instruction.

In this talk, Jessie Close and her son Calen Pick of Bozeman will discuss their struggles with bipolar disease and schizophrenia (respectively). Cats and Kids is a new event this year for kids in the Bozeman community to get involved with the Bobcat Track and Field team. The event is a track meet for "tracksters with all abilities"! Children with any and all physical or mental disabilities are welcome to compete. Each competitor will be paired with a member of the bobcat team and the two will compete as a pair. The teamwork between the two people can be anywhere from the bobcat playing a coaches roll, to the two dividing up portions of the event. Creativity is on our side and I don't want anyone to be discouraged from any event.

SEPTA is having it's traditional back to school potluck at the dinosaur playground. Members will meet at the tables in front of the dinosaur playground and enjoy pizza (provided by SEPTA) and other dishes brought potluck style. This gathering gives mebers a chance to get back together for the new school year and meet new and old friends! Anyone who has any part or interest in SEPTA or the special needs community in general is welcome. SEPTA members please come ready to pay your dues for the year. Membership is still $10 for an individual, $15 for a couple and open to anyone with an interest in the special needs community.
