  • During IEP season the stakes are high.  Parents and teachers alike go into those meetings full of emotions and ideas.  Sometimes I am surprised that what is unsaid seems just as loud as what is actually said. In the past In the past, I’ve made the mistake of going into an IEP angry.  I did not get the best results for my son at that meeting.  So I’ve been trying different tactics over the years, and I’ve made a conscious effort to learn the art of diplomacy in my words and actions.

  • At age two, Thomas Ledbetter was diagnosed with Autism and was not expected to be able to speak; however, thanks to a great support system and an incredible amount of work on his part, he managed to overcome many of the obstacles in his life. Thomas experienced bullying throughout elementary and middle school and decided to channel these negative experiences and feelings into positive graphic design.

    This workshop will employ the "Many Birds Approach" from the Framework for Implementation of Indian Education for All (IEfA) to support teachers as they develop understanding of IEfA contexts and content, while addressing the skills and concepts required to implement the Montana Common Core Standards. Teachers will leave with a dozen new strategies for close analytic reading practiced in the context of some of the highly developed, and Common Core aligned, IEfA Language Arts, Social Studies and Science lessons. Strategies practiced can be taken the next day into the classroom. Demonstrations will span multiple grade levels and content areas and will be debriefed through the lens of the MCCS and the Framework's approach to integration. If you are looking for a way to jump start your implementation of the Common Core Standards and IEfA, this is the workshop of YOU.  This workshop is available free for MSUB students.

    The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) require both students and teachers to demonstrate digital literacy skills by publishing texts online and developing communication skills through the use of different technology tools. The Mapping Media to the Common Core course (part 1) introduces teachers to six different multimedia products which students can create to meet the CCSS requirements; These strategies can also be used to differentiate instruction to meet the  needs of students with disabilities or those with high abilities! Each participant will use an iPad to access the interactive course eBook, as well as, create and share a variety of media products during the course.   Participants will need access to an iPad for this course.

Presenter Trina Halama will share apps for the iPad that are educational tools that can be used in the classroom. There are a variety of useful apps to make the classroom livelier and more engaging for both the students and teacher. Among the apps being shared are apps for time management, social networking, discussion forums and boards, books, art and graphics, and much more. Some of the particular apps to be shared are: Kindle, How Stuff Works, Flashcardlet, free books, Red Stamp, Toontastic, Math Quizzer, Quick Graph, and more. This will be an opportunity to receive and share resources.

The need for this training arose from the 2006 adoption of Montana New Rule 1: Assignment of persons providing instruction of Braille to students in the state of Montana. Topics for this year's workshop will include: a presentation hands-on workshop with Jan Zollinger - Teaching Braille Literacy Through the Arts, braille practice and techniques will be explored.     Technology and digital citizenship are becoming even more important as state's begin implementing the CCSS. This interactive, hands-on workshop will share resources and demonstrate through model lessons, how to efficiently use resources and technology to support CCSS. Attendees will participate in lessons demonstrating the teaching of digital citizenship, English Language Arts, and Math, all aligned to CCSS and integrating technology throughout. The purpose and the goals of the CCSS will also be re-viewed. Jeff Crews and Dean Phillips of Beyond the Chalk. Beyond the Chalk was co-founded by Jeff and Dean who believe in the power of education and the need to continuously provide transformational learning experiences for our teachers and students. Technology, when used effectively as a tool by teachers and students, can facilitate the change from the traditional form of education to a 21st century paradigm. Beyond the Chalk is committed to providing a set of rich and diverse professional development experiences for all educators.
