Theatre offers promise for youth with autism, Vanderbilt study finds | Research News @ ... - 0 views

  • A novel autism intervention program using theatre to teach reciprocal communication skills is improving social deficits in adolescents with the disorder that now affects an estimated one in 88 children, Vanderbilt University researchers released today in the journal Autism Research. The newly released study assessed the effectiveness of a two-week theatre camp on children with autism spectrum disorder and found significant improvements were made in social perception, social cognition and home living skills by the end of the camp. There were also positive changes in the participants’ physiological stress and reductions in self-reported parental stress. Called SENSE Theatre, the Social Emotional Neuroscience & Endocrinology (SENSE) program evaluates the social functioning of children with autism and related neurodevelopmental disorders.

MCT Presents: Once Upon A Mattress - Missoula - January 24, 2012 - 0 views

  • Click here for more information! What:MCT in Missoula is putting on two special performances of Once Upon A Mattress, designed specifically for people with Autism and Aspergers.  This means they will be moderating noise levels, using increased visual aids, eliminating any lights shining into the audience and making other adaptations to make the play accessible and enjoyable for people with different sensory processing. Quiet areas will be provided for children who want to withdraw for a break.  A company in New York originally did an adaptive play for school children on the autism spectrum to great success and heartfelt appreciation by the children and their families. MCT is adopting some of the lessons learned by the NY company and doing some adapting of their own. MCT plans to put on at least two performances and may extend if that seems desirable. To help apprehensive theatre-goers who might not know what to expect, a website is being created so that families can travel step-by-step through the evening and be fully prepared for the fun to follow. A thoughtful and sensitive review of the Adam Lanza Case - 0 views

  •
From the office of the child advocate from the state of Connecticut, a very thoughtful, thorough review of this young man's life and death. http://www.ct.gov/oca/lib/oca/sandyhook11212014.pdf The group points out many of the failures along the way, including reluctance of the school system to accurately classify him in the autism spectrum when he was very young, and later not identifying and addressing his social and emotional deficits. They also highlight the lack of coordination between school, health and mental health providers, which allowed him to fall through the cracks in the system. Also it clearly shows the inappropriate use of homebound school as a means to avoid addressing problems, and the lack of transition from child to adult services and the problems caused when the school system graduated him early from high school, and no longer offered services. By his final year he was clearly isolated in his room, anorectic (6 feet tall and 112 lbs.), and his only forays outside of home were to spend hours dancing on the Dance Dance Revolution game at a local theatre, so he was not hidden away, many people saw his physical and behavioral deterioration on display in a public place. This may be a helpful teaching tool, not only as a case study that documents how untreated developmental disorder can evolve into severe psychopathology, but also as a lesson in the need to coordinate school, health and mental health services, and the potential risks when it is not done.

Autism and real Life Drama - 0 views

  • “Lucy” is a powerful play about life with autism.  Written by Canadian playwright Damien Atkins and directed by David Stradley at the Delaware Theatre Company, this is not a “feel good” story, rather it challenges us. Lucy is a teenager with autism who does not seem destined to “recover” or grow up to be the next Temple Grandin.
