EIPA 2012-2013 Video Conference Series DVD's - 0 views

    What:
    The Montana Office of Public Instruction is happy to announce that a series of DVD Video Conferences and other interpreter training materials from Boys Town and Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) are now available to be checked-out by interpreters, teachers of the deaf and other people with interest in the education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

    How to borrow the DVDs:
    The OPI library loans materials to other libraries and not to individual borrowers. To borrow the DVDs, please contact your local school or public library to request any of the titles below. The EIPA Video Conference series will be circulated as a set (4 DVDs) for each year. The interpreting series (2 DVDs) will be cataloged as elementary and secondary. Because OPI will be granting renewal credits and needs verification of circulation, the Resource Center will send a letter on OPI letterhead to the borrowing library with the DVD(s) verifying the DVD title(s) was checked out. The borrowing library will fill in the patron's name and give the letter to the patron with the loaned DVD(s). It will be the patron's responsibility to present the letter to OPI for Renewal Units (CEUs). The videos will be loaned on a "first-come, first-served" basis for a period of 2 weeks. Renewals after the two-week period will be granted if there is no waiting list.

    Speakers use several different communication techniques to help their listeners follow the logic of the discourse (conversation, teaching, etc.), as well as to hone in on key points of the discussion. Like all languages, American Sign Language speakers (and interpreters) use strategies to assist with listener comprehension. In the literature these are frequently referred to as 'expansion features' (Lawrence, Finton, Smith, etc.). CDC TV - Get The Picture: Childhood Immunizations - 0 views

    The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has put together a short video to help answer questions that parents may have about childhood immunizations. "Get the Picture: Childhood Immunizations" was released on April 13, 2009. The video is approximately six minutes long and features a group of mothers discussing vaccines with an expert from the CDC. The Web site includes a full transcript, plus instructions for downloading or sharing the video via Facebook, Google and other sites.

YouTube Blog: The Future Will Be Captioned: Improving Accessibility on YouTube - 0 views

  • Today, we are opening up auto-captions to all YouTube users. There will even be a "request processing" button for un-captioned videos that any video owner can click on if they want to speed up the availability of auto-captions. It will take some time to process all the available video, so here are some things to keep in mind: While we plan to broaden the feature to include more languages in the months to come, currently, auto-captioning is only for videos where English is spoken. Just like any speech recognition application, auto-captions require a clearly spoken audio track. Videos with background noise or a muffled voice can't be auto-captioned. President Obama's speech on the recent Chilean Earthquake is a good example of the kind of audio that works for auto-captions. Auto-captions aren't perfect and just like any other transcription, the owner of the video needs to check to make sure they're accurate. In other cases, the audio file may not be good enough to generate auto-captions. But please be patient -- our speech recognition technology gets better every day. Auto-captions should be available to everyone who's interested in using them. We're also working to provide auto-captions for all past user uploads that fit the above mentioned requirements. This seventeen-minute video responds to concerns expressed by employers, explaining the ADA in common sense terms and dispelling myths about this often overlooked pool of well-qualified employees.
  • "My Country" In this one-hour documentary, symphony conductor James DePreist, who contracted polio as a young man, profiles three people with disabilities whose lives have been shaped by the struggle for equal rights. Mr. DePreist is the nephew of African American contralto Marian Anderson, who in 1939 was prevented from singing at Constitution Hall. He draws parallels between racial barriers and the barriers faced by people with disabilities.
  • Ten Small Business Mistakes This thirteen-minute video identifies common mistakes that small businesses make when trying to comply with the ADA and addresses the importance and value of doing business with 50 million people with disabilities. The video features statements by store owners expressing their doubts or misunderstandings about the ADA followed by responses from the Assistant Attorney for Civil Rights and other Department of Justice employees explaining the law in common sense terms.

  • Police Response to People with Disabilities, Eight-Part Series Designed for use in roll-call training, this videotape addresses law enforcement situations involving people who have mobility disabilities, mental illnesses, mental retardation, epilepsy or seizure disorders, speech disabilities, deafness or hard of hearing , and blindness or low vision.  The eight segments range from 5 ½ to 10 ½ minutes in length.

    Restraint and Seclusion: Hear Our Stories (working title) from Dan Habib on Vimeo. This is a new film by Dan Habib, Filmmaker at the Institute on Disability at the University of New Hampshire. In the film, Jino Medina, Brianna Hammon, Helena Stephenson and Peyton Goddard describe the restraint and seclusion they experienced while students in public schools, and the devastating physical and emotional injuries they suffered as a result. And Carolyn Medina and Wil Beaudoin describe how the restraint and seclusion their children endured had an impact on them as parents.

    The film (27 minutes) is available free to the public through StopHurtingKids.com for training, professional development and public awareness.
