College remains a hurdle for many with disabilities. Now a new study offers insight on what separates individuals with special needs who are ultimately successful in higher education from those who are not.
In interviews with recent graduates with disabilities, researchers found that students who earned degrees shared the ability to self-advocate and persevere. They also had good insight into their abilities and limitations and often cited a strong relationship with at least one faculty or staff member on campus.

Marissa Clark, Genetic Counselor at Shodair Hospital, will be presenting on a variety of topics that are commonly seen in genetics clinic as it relates to educational needs and support. The focus of the presentation will primarily be on fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and fetal alcohol effects (FAE); however, less common genetic syndromes such as: neurofibromatosis, elhers-danlos syndrome, fragile X, and chromosomal microdeletion/micoduplication disorders will be covered. In addition to the etiology of the genetic syndromes, helpful educational techniques and resources will be addressed, as well as the signs and symptoms that educators should be aware of. There will be ample time for a question and answer session that can address individual cases and situations.

The Montana Regional Education Service Area III (MRESA3) is offering an opportunity for professional development on the new revisions for Gifted and Talented in Montana. This workshop is designed to assist schools and districts to have the necessary components for their Gifted and Talented Program Plan to submit to OPI. The focus of this workshop is to equip the participant with strategies necessary to construct a gifted program that fits their district and population of students. Participants will be presented with the OPI framework for Gifted Education Programs and a Gifted Program Planning Template. Emphasis will be placed on identification of gifted and twice exceptional children as well as characteristics of sound curriculum for gifted students. Several teaching strategies that enable the teacher to differentiate the core curriculum to meet the needs of not only the gifted student but all students in the classroom will be presented. Participants will come away with the ability to complete a comprehensive plan for their district and/or develop a differentiated curriculum unit or lesson.

Alaina Buffalo Spirit began her journey as a self-taught artist in 2004. It was through the tragic loss of her only son that Alaina found solace in art. She was chosen as the 2010 Featured Artist of the Great Falls Indian Art Show in Great Falls, as well as a One-Woman Art Show at the Uprising Gallery in Bozeman in 2011. Most recently, Alaina was chosen to represent Montana by designing ornaments for the national Christmas tree in Washington, D.C. She chose the Chief Dull Knife College, representing the Northern Cheyenne nation, to work with the project. Ledger art derives from Plains Indian Biographic art, which recorded actual events important in the lives of individuals and groups, usually as naturalistic action scenes composed primarily of horses, humans, weapons, and tipis. Requests for disability accommodations at college campuses are on the rise, leaving administrators struggling to determine whether or not flexibility is warranted in every case. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, universities are required to provide “reasonable accommodations” for students with disabilities. Often this means allowing those with special needs extra time or a quiet room for exams. But colleges from New York to Texas are reporting a dramatic increase in recent years in the number of students claiming that they need special accommodations, in many cases due to psychological conditions like depression and bipolar disorder.

Through MRESA3, the Montana Council of Teachers of Mathematics is pleased to offer a two-day workshop designed to help teacher implement the new Standards for mathematical Practice. The Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice describe varieties of expertise that mathematics educators at all levels should seek to develop in their students. These workshops will focus on the eight mathematical practice standards for all grade levels. Students are expected to: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, Reason abstractly and quantitatively, Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, Model with mathematics, Use appropriate tools strategically, Attend to precision, Look for and make use of structure, Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. The Common Core State Standards for Mathematical Content are designed to be focused and coherent in order to improve mathematics achievement. These content standards are articulated over time as a sequence of topics and performances that are logical and move students to deeper understanding of mathematics. The standards stress conceptual understanding of key mathematical ideas and incorporate research-based learning progressions about how students mathematical knowledge, skill, and understanding develop over time. In this workshop Ronda will explore how to create and maintain a workable website using Google Tools. Websites can be created for a personal digital portfolio, a classroom, or a business. Participants will learn how to use many Google tools such as calendar, documents, presentation, and forms and how to incorporate them into a workable website. Ronda will cover each Google tool and give participants an opportunity to develop content that will be utilized to develop a website at the end of the workshop. Ronda McManus began working at the Career Center in 1990 as an early childhood educator. She also held a position helping high school seniors transition from high school to either a university, junior college, training, military service, or a job. Currently, Ronda integrates technology in classrooms in her position at the Billings Career Center. She collaborates and supports teachers and students using technology in their classrooms, helping to create a foundation for learning and innovation in our ever-accelerating world. Ronda continues to be inspired by our youth and the promises they hold true. When/Where:
