Article on Ohio have one of the highest "rates of poverty and some of the lowest household income. This came as an eye opener that poverty is closer to us than we sometimes think. In our perspective Ohio would never look like the place with one of the highest rates of poverty and lowest household income but this article really opened my eyes.
  •
I didn't know that OHIO had one of the most highest poverty rates.

U.S. Hunger - 4 views

This article is giving information about how many people are struggling in the United States from poverty. It gives causes and facts about hunger in the U.S. It was very eye opening when I read that 13 percent of people in the U.S. struggle with hunger. 16.7 million children live in households that struggle with putting food on the table.

Wow! Has it really gotten so bad that 1 in 4 familys struggle to put food on the table? I meen,i can't think about that because sometimes if i don't like whats on my plate then i throw it away and some people woule die for that.
  •
The "Causes of Hunger in the US" article was super interesting. It made me realize that we have so much food in the US but if you don't have money to buy it, then you just can't buy it at all.
  •
i was suprsed to see that 13% of people are living in poverty in the united states
  •
I know Adele! When I don't like something on my plate, I just throw it away and not think about how much someone right then is struggling and starving.
  •
its amazing that poverty hits so close to home
  •
In the "hunger and poverty in african americans" article, i was so shocked of the total income, food insecurities, and poverty total. I am completely blown away by this!
  •
I definetly agree with Adele. It's also sad that 51.4% of Americans will live in poverty before the age of 65. But it is nice to see that not only does this website have facts that grab you and give you a sense of how big this problem is, they also have solutions. The more solutions we can get, the better.

I like the quiz on this site. The facts and statistics were interesting too.
  •
i know but its so sad the number of hungry people including kids (take the quiz)
  •
I took the quiz and missed questions 9. good article Kristen
  •
I was so sad when i found out that in 2009, 15.5 million (20.7 percent) children under the age of 18 were in poverty. Just imagen there could be some in are class.
  •
it was sad that throughout the years the percent tile has increased but it is a good thing that some of the numbers are going down aswell. that means people are getting better with their life. :D but its still veeery sad that people have to live like this.
  •
All the statistics started to scare me. With all of the percentages and numbers, and with them RISING< it just is kind of worrying me.
  •
I can't believe 11% of all families are in poverty. That's about one in ten families. I know at least ten families... It's too bad that there is enough money and resources for everyone, but after preschool, everyone forgot how to share. Imagine how the world would be more serene if everyone had the same amount of money.
  •
I was surprised to hear that 5.6 million people in the U.S. have used food pantries, that is a lot more than I thought.
  •
i never knew how big of an impact food pantries had. i was surprised that 4.8% of people in the US had to go to a food pantry once...i thought only a few homeless people went there. and that 57% of people in poverty get reduced lunches in school...i could not imagine how embarassing that would be.
  •
I really like how you can quiz yourself on poverty. I learned a lot from that. Some information was very surprising but at the same time very depressing/sad.
  •
Woah. Holy crap, I didn't know that there was so much poverty in the world. when I read those statistics I was like O_O
  •
"In 2009, 5.7 percent of households (6.8 million households) experienced very low food security." That could anyone you know. This tells what Mrs. Smith and what Mrs. Lanka was saying that you could know people that are in poverty but aren't aware.
  •
Whoa. That was some high statistics. And that one about kids at the beginning , i was all "Awwwww thats so sad." :'(
  •
I like how you can quiz yourslef over poverty. The stastics and facts are really eye opening/ interesting to learn about.
  •
i got a hundred percent on the quiz! But it was really eye opening to find out that most people in poverty aren't in urban settings.
  •
This is a great website. I love how it has all the statistics. It's just really sad to see how bad poverty has gotten over the years :^(
  •
I was really surprised by how many people are in poverty and how fast it was rising.
  •
All these stats iterally made my jaw drop. I'm sure everyone would agree that these are very weighted words.
  •
I couldn't believe how many people were in poverty and how how fast it was rising. When i read this i wanted to donate food to food pantries so people in poverty could have more to eat.
  •
I found it very shocking by how much the poverty rate increased from 2008 to 2009. It didnt even show 2010 or 2011 which means it must have rapidly increased again. Its a great website but a very sad one.

it suprised me that only 13% of people in the u.s. live in poverty.
  •
It surprised me that 26.9 percent of latino's have a hard time to put food on the table. I feel sad.
  •
if america is one of the wealthiest countries we should be sharing the wealth instead of keeping it to ourselves. it surprised me that most people will go through poverty before they are 65.

I never really knew how people were considered "poor". This artilcle really explains how people are considered poor. This article really shows dfferent views on how people view poverty.
  •
This site will give you facts of Poverty.
  •
I was amazed that two adults with three children would make 25,603 dollars. I can't even imagine how they would survive this. Looking at the graph is really an eye opener to how little people really make.
  •
This article has many frequently asked questions about poverty. It contains many facts about poverty and how it has changed over time, how it differs between different races, and how it is measures depending on how many people live in a household. I was surprised when i saw the graph of the poverty in different races. The poverty in thousands was pretty much the same until you got down to the asian percent. It was considerably lower then any other race which surprised me.
  •
I really like this website because it gives you all you should know if you want to learn all about poverty. Along with descriptions of everything, it provides very helpful charts and graphs.
  •
its amazing to me how africa has changed
  •
I didn't know that In 2009, 14.3 percent of all persons lived in poverty. I also agree with luke.
  •
It talks about the university of Michigan finding out about how many people in the U.S. are in poverty and won't tell anyone. It goes from a single individual to single parent to two adults.

Poverty isn't just in other countries, it is in our country and our own state.
  •
poverty is everywhere, not just in our country but all over the world
  •
I can not believe 1.5 million people in ohio make less then $22,050 a year. Its so sad, to think that maybe they couldn't get food for their family or have a cozy house to go to at night.
  •
there was a great family in ohio, then one day everything changed and turned in a different direction. one night the father looses his job, and then that once great family became under the level of poverty. they need help!
  •
This article form the Columbus Dispatch is talking about how Ohio's population has increased since 2002 by 1.2 percent while the people living in poverty has grown 41.7%. I was really surprised at how many people live in poverty in our state. I think That This increase had to do with so many job losses in ohio
  •
yes but its in our state too. some of us don't realize. probably some of us thought it was in like africa at first.
  •
I know there is poverty everywhere, but never thought there was so much in Ohio.
  •
Jeez, I'm almost 16 years-old, and knowing that I might not get a good paying sulks, and knowing that Ohio is going into poverty makes it even more worse! I wonder what it will be like in 2015, or 2020?
  •
This is an article about rising poverty in Ohio. This was really shocking that poverty is really becoming a problem in Ohio.
  •
This article in the Columbus Dispatch gives statistics and info about the poverty rate in Ohio. Acording to the article, 1.5 million people live in Ohio, and 13.7% of them live in poverty. This shocks me because I've never really seen or heard of people living in Ohio being in poverty.
  •
Yea like my mom works for Marion City school and works with special needs kids with adhd learning disabilites and most of the famileis in Marion Live in Poverty. It just makes me sad.
  •
This is a really, really interesting article. I had no clue that there was so much poverty in Ohio. You just sort of always think it's somewhere else, not in your own city.
  •
Gives an overview of poverty statistics in Ohio. It's surprising that the number of people living in poverty has grown by 40% as well as a little disturbing.
  •
Extremely eye opening. i thought the same thing as a lot of people that Columbus was pretty well off and wealthy... apperantly not.
  •
This article was posted on January 22, 2010, just one year ago. In this article you will find suprising statstics, showing the hgh rate of poverty in our own home state. The unemployment rate has soared in the past few years, and more Ohioans are finding it hard to cope. This article almost made me sick to my stomach, seeing that so many people are living in poverty, and that I was totoally oblivious to it. I felt guilty in a sense, since I have not even NOTICED that there was such a problem with poverty. It was very informational, as well as somewhat recent.
  •
This article literally comes close to home. Everybody thinks that Columbus and the suburbs of it are really rich, but the statistics proved me wrong.. And the fact that we've gone nine months now with "double digit unemployment" is too bad. Everybody deserves to be supported. If our society makes money so important for life, why can't they provide jobs? Ridiculous...
  •
I like this article because it shows that poverty isnt just in africa, but its in the us to.
  •
I thought that this article contained many good statistics. The one about how the population living in Ohio has grown by 41 percent since 2002 was very fascinating and sad to hear. That is a huge change.
  •
this gives information about the poverty levels in ohio and gives the total household income of every year (22,000). they wern't joking at the food pantry. this is something that people really need to think about.
  •
It was surprising that the population only increased 1% but the poverty level increased 41%. It made me realize how many people are in poverty right here in Ohio.
  •
i am very surprised that about 33% of Ohio people are poor :(

Wow I didn't know America had 41 million food stamps in use! And I agree Haley we do need to something before it gets worse! I loved the article, good job!
  •
its strange how even though we are the richest country in the world, we have millions in poverty, and the poverty rate is increasing quickly. it makes me feel sad that i didnt know about any of this and that a lot of these people dont get a lot of help
  •
Four times as more in only three years? Thats amazing. If it keeps increasing at this rate imagine how bad it will be in 2013! We do need to start doing something about this.
  •
I dig how they have pictures and such its very depressing.
  •
I didn't know there were food stamps, or even an all time food stamp record! These 15 facts, though very short, are to the point and informational. The pictures were very depressing, but thes are the pictures of poverty.
  •
I hope that the high level of poverty in 2009 will sow people how much help is needed.
  •
It's amazing how much the food stamp program has increased and how many families are in poverty! I also like how they make the facts short and add pictures, because for me it makes it much more interesting.
  •
i wonder why there was such an increase in poverty in 2009
