Iran govt. continues to block social networking sites. - 2 views

  •
The Iranian government briefly lifted their blocks of social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook on Tuesday of this week - only to put them back the following day. These Iranian blocks of websites came about after the 2009 riots that were the direct result of social networking sites. - These types of social networking sites promote so much networking, knowledge and idea sharing and communication that they must be accessed by those with the technology - not blocked by a fearful government.

Do you agree with Reza that the Iran government may have turned off the block to catch more people using these prohibited sites? Why would a government like Iran want to limit this access? How does this reinforce the importance of the basic American First Amendment right to a free press?

Like with any social network, be careful. Not everyone on there is a person just like you trying to learn a new language. But that aside, this website was really great for me to talk with people who knew Mandarin Chinese and were willing to help. Some people I just had quick conversations with that only lasted a few sentences, others I still talk to today. The person that knows Mandarin that I still talk to lives in China and is always happy to help me with the tones and to have conversations with me and teach me how to say things like a normal Chinese person would say them. This is a really great resource for person to person interaction. But again, be careful, as always.

Of Wolves and Men - 0 views

  •
Of Wolves and Men gives an intricate account of the relationship between humans and wolves over the course of history. The book reports the image of "the wolf" through ancient mythology, and the impact of that mythology on humans interactions with wolves. I focused on a chapter that explains the different social hierarchy's of wolf packs, along with wolves social values in the pack. This book is an excellent resource for my work as it gives me a much needed bridge between my main course of study, wolves, and my secondary course of study, humans. Lopez writes elegantly and cleanly.

7 Common Myths About The Brain - Business Insider - 0 views

  •
The main point of the article is to just go over 7 myths of the brain and why they are not entirely true. For example, some people say that you only use 10% of your brain, but really you use many parts of your brain which are all equal to more than 10%, so the myth is completely incorrect. The purpose is to expose to people that not everything you hear in movies or see on social media is always correct, and that by letting people know about these myths, they will think twice about accepting truth from everything on the internet. But the topic that is covered is that some brain "facts" are actually myths, and the article chooses 7 to debunk, like the myth that we humans only use 10% of our brain; That's entirely not true. We use far more than 10% of our brain, because we use different PARTS of our brains, all at different times. This myth being debunked is important because it doesn't make us sound so stupid (using only 1/10 of our brain power), but it also contradicts every movie, like Limitless, and Lucy, which are about people which gain control of more than 10% of their brains, in which the results are supposed to be drastic, like the ability to freeze time. If someone were to ask about this article, I would simply tell them that the article goes over 7 of the biggest myths of the brain, and debunks them, and has data to back it.

Vermont Public Radio "Does Your Dog Really Like You?" - 0 views

  •
This VPR radio program visits the topic of emotion in animals. Virginia Morell is an animal researcher and author of the book "Animal Wise: The Thoughts and Emotions of Our Fellow Creatures." Morell studies the emotions of different animals and their means for communicating those emotions. The large topic of interest in this short VPR news special is about whether humans have a special connection with dogs. Morell's answer is yes, dogs and humans have a similar way of communicating with facial cues and body language which makes our two species somewhat appealing to one another. This helps my research a lot in that it brings out not only the similarities between K-9s and humans but also the mysterious draw of one animal to the other. Since the domesticated dog is so closely related to the wolf, it is true that wolves have similar body language, facial expression and social behavior tendencies. Morell speaks about her topic of expertise with great ease and it is fun to listen to because she is so smart.

A History of Nail Polish - 0 views

  •
Some topics that were covered in this website were; How in 3000 BC wearing nail polish indicated wealth and social status. Mixed from egg whites, gelatin, beeswax and gum Arabic. (To make different shade they added rose, orchid or impatient petals.) I was very shocked to find out that in 600 BC nail polish was strictly for royalty and those who were lower class and had nail polish on they would be sentenced to the death penalty. Also went into other time periods such as the 14th century and 1500-1990's explaining the trends that went on in those times. I thought this was a very informative website and I learned a lot from it as well.

Can "Rewilding" Restore Vanishing Ecosystems - 0 views

George Monbiot talks about the "rewilding" of Yellowstone during the integration of wolves. He speaks briefly about the extinction of wolves seventy years ago, and how humans fear wolves because they are so socially intelligent and are similar to humans. Monbiot speaks further about how the absence of wolves and how that impacted the ecosystem of Yellowstone.

Fundraising Site - 0 views

  •
This was the site I used to fundraise for the half marathon that I ran to benefit Zeno Mountain Farm. The whole team from Zeno made fundraising pages with this site, and it let you set a goal, provide information about what you are fundraising for, and notified you via email when you got donations or reached your goal. With a site where people will be entering their credit card numbers to donate to you, you have to be sure that it is reliable. The only way I knew this site was reliable was because it had been endorsed by the leader of our marathon team, but now that I know I will feel confident using it for future fundraising endeavours I embark on. I liked using this site because it made fundraising a communal activity that I could share with my entire marathon team; instead of just calling people in isolation, I could track my progress with my teammates and receive inspiration from what they were doing. It also allowed me to broaden the pool of people I was reaching out to to sponsor me, since I could connect the stayclassy page with my facebook and other social media pages.
