About the Institute for Science and Math Education | UW Institute for Science and Mathe... - 0 views

  •
University of Washington Institute for Science and Mathematics Education has created partnerships to envision, cultivate, and study equity-focused educational models and practices in areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). We do this work across the K-12 grade span and across formal and informal learning environments. We believe that all young people should be able to decide their own futures. Their opportunity to learn in STEM fields plays a critical role in their opportunity to do so now and in the future. We develop innovative projects that seek to deliver on this goal and closely study them to develop knowledge about how to broaden participation in STEM. The Institute is strongly affiliated with the Learning in Informal and Formal Environments (LIFE) Center.

10 Unanswerable Questions that Neither Science nor Religion can Answer - Futurist Speaker - 2 views

  •
A few years ago I was taking a tour of a dome shaped house, and the architect explained to me that domes are an optical illusion. Whenever someone enters a room, their eyes inadvertently glance up at the corners of the room to give them the contextual dimensions of the space they're in.

Teach Evolution - Understanding Evolution - 0 views

  •
Evolution is essential to our curriculum and to scientific literacy. To understand the big picture of biology, students need to understand life in terms of both its history and its future - the changing life forms and ecosystems that have arisen and changed over billions of years, as well as the mechanisms that brought about those changes and are shaping the future of life on Earth.

People Matter: The Future of Research Ethics - YouTube - 0 views

  •
The Future of Research is being decided now! While we are fortunate to have a robust system of protections in place that help assure research will provide more benefit than harm, the regulations that guide research with human participants have been in place for 40 years. Society is changing, technology is changing, the capabilities and interests of all of us are changing. We need to evolve our research systems too. It is increasingly hard for one group to decide what would be considered a benefit, or a harm, for another. In this new People Matter Project video, we call to institutions and Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) to think creatively about how to conduct trustworthy research in this changing climate.

Population pyramids: Powerful predictors of the future - Kim Preshoff - YouTube - 0 views

  •
Population statistics are like crystal balls -- when examined closely, they can help predict a country's future (and give important clues about the past). Kim Preshoff explains how using a visual tool called a population pyramid helps policymakers and social scientists make sense of the statistics, using three different countries' pyramids as examples.

Stem cells as future source for eco-friendly meat -- ScienceDaily - 0 views

  •
The scientific progress that has made it possible to dream of a future in which faulty organs could be regrown from stem cells also holds potential as an ethical and greener source for meat. So say scientists who suggest that every town or village could one day have its very own small-scale, cultured meat factory.

Gene editing in monkeys, not mice, could improve research - Futurity - 0 views

  •
A new study shows that gene editing using CRISPR/Cas9 technology can work in rhesus monkey embryos. The results, published in the current issue of Human Molecular Genetics, open the door for pursuing gene editing in nonhuman primates as models for new therapies, including pharmacological, gene-, and stem cell-based therapies, says Keith Latham, animal science professor at Michigan State University and lead author of the study.

Sneaky! Virus sickens plants, but helps them multiply | Science News for Students - 0 views

  •
One common virus takes a sneaky route to success. It doesn't kill its leafy hosts. Instead, it makes infected plants smell more attractive to bees. That ensures this germ will have a new generation of the plants to host it in the future.

Gene-environment interplay | Science - 0 views

  •
The advent of increasingly powerful and inexpensive DNA sequencing methods is changing many aspects of genetics research. In particular, human genome sequencing is transforming our understanding of many aspects of human biology and medicine. However, we must be careful to remember that genes alone do not determine our futures-environmental factors and chance also play important roles.

The Times and Troubles of the Scientific Method - YouTube - 0 views

  •
Science is working tirelessly night and day to disprove its own theories about how the universe works (or at least, that's what science thinks it's doing). Hank tells us a quick history of how we came to create and adopt the scientific method and then gives us a vision of the future of science (hint: it involves a lot more computers and a lot less pipetting).
