On September 15, the Washington University School of Medicine published a study in The American Journal of Psychiatry revealing that schizophrenia, commonly thought of as a single mental disorder, is actually a group of eight distinct afflictions. People with schizophrenia are typically diagnosed in their 20s, which is when symptoms (such as delusions and hallucinations) begin to manifest. The brain disorder affects about 1 percent of the population, and it is highly genetic: According to the NIH, having a relative diagnosed with schizophrenia increases one's chances of developing the disorder by 10 percent, while having an identical twin with the disorder raises the risk to 40 to 65 percent.

High heritability points to a major role for inherited genetic variants in the aetiology of schizophrenia7, 8. Although risk variants range in frequency from common to extremely rare9, estimates10, 11 suggest half to a third of the genetic risk of schizophrenia is indexed by common alleles genotyped by current genome-wide association study (GWAS) arrays. Thus, GWAS is potentially an important tool for understanding the biological underpinnings of schizophrenia

Now, scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Calif., have pinpointed a gene linked to these disorders that seems to be crucial for normal brain structure in prenatal development. The findings, which appear in an open-access article in the Jan. 14 issue of Cell Reports, shed new light on the mechanistic workings of a gene called MDGA1, previously implicated in autism, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Medical researchers have discovered a gene that increases the risk of schizophrenia, a mental illness that affects more than 2 million Americans, sometimes causing delusions and hallucinations. The finding was first reported this week in the scientific journal "Nature".

Published today (17:00BST, 03/06/2015) in the journal Neuron, their work presents strong evidence that disruption of a delicate chemical balance in the brain is heavily implicated in the disorder. In the largest ever study of its kind, the team found that disease-linked mutations disrupt specific sets of genes contributing to excitatory and inhibitory signalling, the balance of which plays a crucial role in healthy brain development and function.
